Definition and Example What is a definition? What is an example?
Definition and Example Try to arrange the following sentences in an order that makes sense. --For instance, anyone who has ever played a card game such as hearts is familiar with the heuristic to “Get rid of high cards first.” --Informal problems often call for a heuristic --a rule of thumb that suggests a course of action without guaranteeing an optimal solution. --Another example is the situation in which a student tries to decide whether to take a particular course and follows the advice to “Ask friends how they liked the instructor.”
Definition and Example This pattern of organization is just what you think it might be. When reading a passage, if it is a definition and example selection, a term will be defined and one or more examples will be given to help you understand the definition better.
Definition and Example Look at page 176 of your textbook. Practice 2 Paragraph A. What is the definition? Which sentence? What sentence does the example start?
Illustration This pattern of organization will NOT be to tough. If you are trying to illustrate something, can you tell me what you are trying to do?
Illustration If an author is trying to illustrate something, they are painting a picture( not literally ) of whatever they are talking about so that the reader can get a better understanding of what point they are trying to get across. This is usually done with several examples.
Illustration To see some words that an author may use to help a reader determine if the passage they are reading is an illustration pattern of organization, turn to page 172 in your textbook. Notice how all of these words are key words to set up an example. If the author is giving you an example of something, they are illustrating the point they are making.
