Structure Of A Five Paragraph Essay
Writing an essay on the structure of a five-paragraph essay might seem deceptively simple at first
glance. After all, it's a topic that appears straightforward, as it revolves around a well-known and
widely used essay format. However, delving into the intricacies of constructing a cohesive and
effective five-paragraph essay reveals that it's not as easy as it may seem.
To start with, the challenge lies in avoiding clichГ©s and banalities when discussing the
structure. The five-paragraph essay is a familiar and often-taught format, and the risk of
producing a generic or formulaic essay on the topic is high. Finding a fresh perspective or
presenting the information in a way that engages the reader can be a significant hurdle.
Another difficulty arises when trying to strike the right balance between providing basic
information and delving into more nuanced aspects of the topic. It's essential to cater to a diverse
audience, from those unfamiliar with the concept to those seeking a deeper understanding. This
necessitates careful consideration of the level of detail and complexity in the explanations.
Moreover, maintaining a coherent and logical flow throughout the essay is crucial. While
discussing the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, it's imperative to demonstrate the
interconnectedness of these elements in a manner that is both informative and engaging. This
requires a thoughtful approach to transitions and a clear organization of ideas.
The challenge intensifies when attempting to offer practical tips and examples to aid the reader
in implementing the knowledge gained. Striking a balance between theoretical insights and
practical applications can be demanding, as it involves foreseeing potential questions and
addressing them preemptively.
In conclusion, writing an essay on the structure of a five-paragraph essay involves navigating the
fine line between providing fundamental information and offering valuable insights that go
beyond the basics. It requires a keen awareness of the audience's needs and an ability to present
the information in a manner that is both informative and engaging.
For those seeking assistance with essays or similar tasks, various resources are available, such as

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Immediate Syntact
Analysis
Immediate constituent analysis (IC analysis) was presented by American structural
linguist Leonard Bloomfield in 1933 (Encyclopædia Britannica, 1998). According to
him, it refers to a system of grammatical analysis that divides sentences into
successive layers, or constituents, until, in the final layer, each constituent consists of
only a wordor meaningful part of a word. (Encyclopædia Britannica, 1998) With
advantages and disadvantages, it makes multiple influences on linguistics. On the one
hand, by revealing syntactic structures of sentences, it can facilitate the study of
syntactic relations, the study of the recursiveness and creativity of language, as well
as the study of syntactic ambiguity. However, on the other hand, it is difficult to
employ this approach to analyze certain complex sentences in practice and to reveal
certain syntactic ambiguity. This essay will introduce... Show more content on

From the above explanations and examples, it has been proven that the IC analysis is
beneficial to the study of the three syntactic relations in that it can clearly divide
sentences into hierarchical structures.
What is more, the second advantage of the IC analysis is that it is helpful to the
study of the recursiveness and creativity of language. By definition, recursiveness
means to extend sentences by conjoining and embedding to form hypotactic or
paratactic sentence structures (Hu, 2011). Together with openness, it reveals the
creativity of language (Hu, 2011). Take the sentence The girl is watering the flower.

Background of PetSmart
Operating in 1197 stores in North America, PetSmart is the largest specialty retailer
of services and solutions for the lifetime needs of pets (PetSmart.com.PetSmart
Corporate: Investor Relations. 2012). The business of pets and pet care continues to
be a thriving and growing industry; the American Pet Products Association, or
APPA, estimated the calendar year 2010 market at approximately $47.7 billion, an
increase of more than 180% since calendar year 1994 (PetSmart.com. Investor
Relations. Annual Report. 2010). The industry s size and scope provides
opportunities for a range of business to compete for the pet owner s discretionary
spending; as such PetSmart must constantly innovate and offer consumers value
across their business model. The ongoing streamlining of the company s value chain
offers insight into two big ideas of economics: markets and voluntary exchange, and
choices and incentives. PetSmart PetSmart has been in operation since 1987 with a
mission to serve pet owners, termed pet parents by the company across multiple
product and service platforms (PetSmart.com.PetSmart Corporate: Company
Overview. 2012). PetSmart s goal is to capture an ever increasing share of the
dynamic pet market, which has 62% of households in the United States owning a pet,
equating to more than 71 million homes (PetSmart.com. Investor Relations. Annual
Report. 2010); by providing pet owners differentiated choices and value across key
categories: food and treats, supplies and
Slave Narrative
Reading Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass I gathered that it is a slave
narrative and has some of the same characteristics as From Incidents in the Life of
a Slave Girl such as in both of the stories neither of the slaves really knew a lot
about their self, and both were separated from family. The narrative is about a boy
named Douglass that is a slave. However, Douglass is not a typical slave as he
used his resources to teach himself how to read and write about freedom and slaves.
Douglass like any other slave was passed down from master to master and was
whipped and tormented daily. As time went by the torment Douglass experienced by
his master Covey resulted in Douglass not interested in reading any more but trying

1.Describe why humans have a blind spot.
Humans have blind spots because of the optic nerve information that is sent to the
brain from the retina is through the optic nerve. Well the nerve has to have a way to
exit the eye, that exit is where the blind spot is.
2.Describe the functional and anatomic differences between rods and cones.
The retina is what houses the eye s rods and cones. The eye has about 6 million
cones and 120 million rods. Both rods and cones get their names from their shape.
Rods do not provide color vision, and are sensitive to dim light. Cones function well
in the day and provide color vision. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

lastly there is a Eustachian tube which is the middle ear as well it helps with pressure.
6.Describe the factors that contribute to sound localization.
There are two factors that contribute to sound localization the first is the pinna also
known as the outer ear, it is cup shaped to allow you to hear what s in front of you.
Then there is the fact that you have two ears on each side of yor head, sound in
each ear may differ so the brain can determine where the sound is coming from
because it is receiving sound from both.

The somatosensory system has to do with touch, pressure, pain, temperature,
movement, and vibrations from muscles, joints, and skin. Uit sends sensations
through the spinal cord, to the brainstem, then the thalamic relay nuclei to the parietal
lobe that houses the sensory cortex.

Bishop s Same Gender Couples Adoption
Bishop Disapproves Same Gender Couples Adoption Rights in Czech Republic
In response to a change in the Czech Republic s law now affirming the rights of
LGB people adopting children, Bishop Vaclav Maly chairman of the Justice and
Peace Commission of the Czech Bishops Conference stated:
The model of the family, constituted by a man and a woman, has been proved over
thousands of years and shown by numerous expert studies to serve a child s physical
and psychological needs best, according to an article on The Tablet.
In June of 2016, the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic struck down the law
that kept LGB people in same gender partnerships from adopting children. The
Czech Republic, where Catholicism is the dominant religion, has seen slow change
from their landmark decision in 2006 that created a registered partnership class for
same gender couples. Registered partnerships are similar to marriages but with less
rights, such as until recently not having the right to adopt children. The previous law,
however, allowed LGB people not in registered partnerships to adopt and only
restricted those in registered partnerships. The court s June decision allows one
member of a registered partnership to adopt but does not yet allow both partners to
hold joint custody.
In a statement, Bishop Vaclav Maly said that recent increases in child abuse and
neglect in the Czech Republic required increased dialogue on the country s adoption
and foster care. After researching

Another threat comes from smaller expeditions that are becoming increasingly
common by individuals and small parties. Antarctica requires careful planning and a
series of fail safe rescue procedures if anyone gets into difficulty. These smaller
expeditions sometimes fail to do this adequately and resort to humanitarian requests
for aid from shipping or nearby national bases when they get into difficulty. In recent
years for example a small helicopter (totally unsuitable for the task) crashed into the
sea off the Antarctica Peninsula requiring rescue.
There have so far been no major pollution incidents or losses of life in Antarctica as
a result of tourism, though there was a very close call in November 2007 with the
holing and subsequent sinking by an iceberg of the M/V Explorer in the Brans
field Strait. Fortunately for the passengers and crew of the Explorer the collision
occurred in calm conditions, so everyone was able to get off the ship safely and into
lifeboats. (Ref: Crossley, Louise. Explore Antarctica. 1st ed. New York: Cambridge

Dominion of Canada s Foundation
Ever since I moved to Canada, I have constantly been taught about arguably the single
most important event in the country s history Confederation. In 1867, the Fathers of
Confederation helped ratify the first British North America Act, the culminating
product of a hard fought political process which united Upper and Lower Canada,
Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. The study of the Dominion of Canada s formation
is typically fixated on the politicians roles (3), and this deficient scope is a significant
reason as to why Andrew Smith s monograph, British Business and Canadian
Confederation, manifested itself so clearly to me. As I am studying Canadian history
through a business context, this book seemed quite appropriate Instead of focusing
on the usual suspects, such as the American threat or Anglophone Francophone
relations, Smith seeks to analyze the often neglected influence that British
businessmen had on Confederation. As such, the piece s overriding argument is that
had there not been support from prominent British investors, Canada s landmark
federal unification would not have taken place, whether on July 1, 1867 or otherwise
(3). By overtly and exhaustively presenting the prevailing contention in the opening
paragraphs, Smith leaves no doubt in the reader s mind as to what the following
chapters contain and validate.
The British North American economy was significantly operated by the
aforementioned investors (21). Due to economic crisis in the early 1860s (44), they

Norovirus with approximately 21 million cases per year, which contributes to nearly
800 deaths and 71,000 hospitalization annually.1 The virus not only afflict United
States Citizens but, persons all over the world. Worldwide Norovirus accounts for 9 to
24% of all sporadic gastroenteritis.2 Norovirus is a very contagious virus that affects
people of all ages, sexes, genders, and ethnicities, with the most adverse health effects
for the elderly and the young. The most severe health affects occur in children under
5 years of age and adults over the age of 65, because they are considered
immunocompromised.3 Recurrences often occurs because the virus is extremely
diverse and lacks long term immunity. Therefore, there are many ways in which a
person can contract the virus, which includes drinking contaminated water or
touching contaminated surfaces. In the case definition of norovirus, the afflicted
persons experience issues with their intestines and stomach, or experience acute
gastroenteritis; this is followed by severe vomiting and diarrhea.1
Pathophysiology of Norovirus
Pathophysiology is the biological and physical study of a disease that focuses on how
the body contracts the disease, and the reactions the body gives from contracting the
disease. Norovirus is transmitted through exposure, to aerosols, direct person to
person contact, and indirect contact

Innocent animals are thrust into the horrors of war every battle humans create. These
non human creatures are cruelly experimented with excruciating weapons, used as

Intersection of Law and Ethics in Hong Kong

Despite various ethical problems arise, the Government has put its society interest,
the value of society economy, to the highest priority.
According to the Census and Statistics department, the cross border marriage
between HK men and mainland women was several times of increase since 2001
to 2006 . Although no direct relationship, but it is likely that the cross border birth
is in a trend of increase, too. Sadly that the Government has ignored these families.
First of all, as in the mainland maternity case in the Court mentioned above, the
HK father has to pay non local fee for his wife s obstetric services in a HK public
hospital, and then the right of abode of his babies will be deprived under the recent
rule enforced. The justice issue is not only a comparison among these families and
those purely HK parents , but also appear on those HK mothers and non local
fathers, who are not under the exclusion blanket of obstetric services, too. So both
are mixed families but why the latter families enjoy the right while the former are
deprived?
If Ethics defines what is good for individual and society, and being justice is the
concept of moral rightness of an individual , then it is unethical to be injustice and
depriving one s rights. In this case, the HK Government is applying tighter rules on
mainland mothers , at the same time restricting those cross border families and also
ignoring the justice in
The Themes Of St. Augustine s Confessions By Saint
Augustine
Confessions
In the book Confessions by Saint Augustine, there are several themes throughout
that describes Augustine s thoughts and opinions of how to live responsibly.
Augustine believes that God is the reason for everything good that happens to one s
life, which you are to praise him for. Augustine goes through some tough situations,
which he uses his life as a standard way of living or an example of what others go
through in their lifetime. He plainly states on several occasions that in everything
you do needs to be for the glory of God. This essay will outline the main themes
referred in the passage of Book X, which are find God later in one s life, seeking
pleasure in worldly things, and understanding where the beauty of the world comes
from. Also, the essay will analyze his worldview that you shouldn t find pleasure in
worldly possessions and to praise God, and how it helps others live or have a
responsible life.
There are several themes within the passage that shows Augustine s worldview. For
example, in the first line of the passage, he understands the concept of loving God
later in life: I have learnt to love you late (Conf. X.27). This quote suggests that
Augustine is now able to see why is mother was so skeptical in giving him is
baptism early in his childhood. He commits to sin on numerous occasions, but
comes back to find God again. In Book II, Augustine s actions are paralleled with
the prodigal son: I strayed still farther from you and you did not restrain me.
I was tossed and spilled, floundering in the broiling sea of my fornication, and you
said no word (Conf. II.1). Augustine acted just as the prodigal son did by straying
from God and being taken over by worldly pleasures. As in the story, Augustine
does come back to God and devotes himself to Him more than ever. It can be
reasonably inferred that God rejoices more in the people who were lost and then
found their salvation than to always be faithful towards Him. This suggests that God
wants people to try and do it on their own, making mistakes after mistakes, and then
hitting rock bottom to perhaps humble one in order to get their full attention to be
placed on Him; this is what a responsible self looks like. In this section, the theme

sport, but college athletes don t?
College athletes should not get paid to play a sport because they are playing for the
love of the game. Many athletes get scholarships or benefits to play a sport in the
first place which means that they don t need any more money. Sports should be a
reward for good grades and only players that really love the sport should play it.
Any athlete should just play the sport for fun and not money. It s way too difficult to
pay a college athlete because each athlete plays differently. The NCAA, an

Forgiveness In The Novel Disgrace
Disgrace is a novel by the Nobel prize winning writer Coetzee set in the post
apartheid period in South Africa, a period when people were trying their best to learn
to forgive the past wrong done by the oppressive, ethnic government. The question of
what it means to forgive is raised in the novel. Forgiveness is seen in the South
African society as something conditional, the wrongdoers have to do something so
that they can be forgiven. The Promotion of National Unity and Reconciliation Act
34 of 1995 established a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) to help those
victims who were uncomfortable to forgive. It forged a new relationship among
amnesty, trust, and forgivenessin forgiving, people are not being asked to forget, but
to remember, so that such atrocities will not happen again. In this essay, I will first
talk about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission so as to criticise its presumption
of the significance of truth revelation. I will support my notion with reference to
some scenes in the novel Disgrace and point out some characteristics of forgiveness.
Then I will put forward what I think it means to forgive a past wrong and finally
question the necessity of the existence of the Commission.
In the TRC, the significance of truth is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a short video on TRC amnesty hearing of the case, a real confrontation between
the wrongdoer Thapelo and those who had lost their loved ones took place. Thapelo
asked for forgiveness from the bottom of his heart though he clearly understood that
some would forgive and some would not even after knowing the truth. One victim s
sister said, We can t forgive you, you say this and you say that, you have more than
one story. This statement hints that having too much truth may hinder the process of
forgiveness, to forgive does not mean that you must know what the truth is and accept
Stereotypes Of Teenagers
The ages thirteen through nineteen have been influenced by many things through
the media. TV programs, movies, advertising, magazines, and the web. These
medias are more used by teenagers than any other group. Teenagers are very
difficult to figure out what they watch, or read, or listen. It s different, but all
together it s mostly the same. The TV programs have a lot of stereotypes towards
teenagers. Girls think they can t do things that guys do. There are programs out there
that show those types of stereotypes and these stereotypes get into their head which
makes them realize there s no way for them to do it. The contradicted stereotypes are
that there are some girls out there in this world that CAN do what any guy can do....

In school, there are clubs and after school activities. The people running those
advertise by giving out fliers or just straight up talking to you about their club or
the activities. They can also ask a specific person, like for example, they can go to
a different race and talk about a certain subject that s referring to that race. Anyone
can be advertised in any way or anything. It doesn t matter if you re a girl or a guy
or a different race. You ll be advertised anyways. Sometimes when it s a specific
type of advertisement that s referring to someone specific, it can make you think oh
it s not for me so I should just ignore it. And it ll make you feel like that
advertisement wasn t for you, but for someone else. There are so many different
kinds of magazines. There are fashion magazines, fitness magazines, cooking
magazines, and all other kinds. The ones that teens usually look at are fashion,
fitness, and sport magazines. For girls the fashion magazine is the one they would
most likely look at. They want to follow the trends and what s in and what s out of
fashion and some want to fit in with a crew that dresses differently. Same thing with
the guys. Whatever s out of fashion for them, they don t wear anymore, but for girls
whatever was out can come back to trend. For the guys that usually doesn t happen.
People may think of you differently because of what you re wearing, but they really
don t know who you really are.

The reason behind the curtail of SingTel s 15 year licence was to be consistent
with development in the global industry, keep up with the technological advances

early termination of the exclusive licence (Ure 2008). With the liberalization and

Shakespeare s Use of Ovid s Metamorphoses and Virgil s Aeneid as Basis for The
Tempest
William Shakespeare, as did most writers of his time, took the basis for the stories
he wrote from other texts. He would use source poems or mythology in order to
write his own works. Romeo and Juliet, for example, can be compared to the tragedy
of Pyramus and Thisby. Plays such as Richard III and Julius Caesar are artistic
accounts of historic events. The Tempest, however, is commonly perceived as an
original story. Many critics feel that this was the only story of his that was entirely
created by Shakespeare. This is not the case. In fact, there are several sources from
which he very much drew inspiration for this tale. Shakespeare used ... Show more

atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries. CHD is the most common cause of death
globally, and in Australia. However, the prevalence of CHD is disproportionately

rate of other Australian populations. There are a number of established risk factors
for developing CHD, including hypercholesterolaemia, obesity and hypertension.
These risk factors are especially prevalent in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait

CHD is the most common type of cardiovascular disease [2] and was the leading
cause of death globally between 2000 and 2012 [3] accounting for 14.6% of all
deaths in Australia in 2011 (21,513 persons) and 7.8% of all disability adjusted life
years (DALYs) in Australasia in 2010 (471,550 DALYs) [4]. In 2011 12, CHD was
estimated to affect 585,900 Australians, with the condition being more common in
men (3.3%) than women (2.0%) and among those aged 70 and over (15%
compared with 2.2% for those aged 25 69) [4]. In 2008 09 more than $2 billion was
spent on CHD treatment and expenses more than any other disease in Australia [5].
According to the 2004 05 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health
Survey, the prevalence rate for Indigenous Australiansis approximately twice as high
as that for non Indigenous Australians [6]. Indeed, the burden of CHD is greater in
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations too, with acute myocardial
infarctions (AMI) in adults aged 25 and over occurring 2.6 times more often than in
non Indigenous populations. Death rates due to CHD are also higher in Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander populations, factoring in 2.0 and 1.6 times higher for men
and women, respectively, in 2009 2010 [4].

The American Health Insurance System
In attempting to remedy the unjust nature of the American health insurance system,
one cannot determine what a just system should be based on the current assessment
of society. Inequalities within the current system cannot foster discussion for what we
believe is justice because preconceived notions cloud the judgment of even the
foremost health policy intellectuals. Many philosophers therefore turn to creating
hypothetical societies where these inequalities do not exist as a means to facilitate
the discussion as to what true justice requires. Two such individuals, Ronald
Dworkin and Charles Fried, have constructed such situations as a means to assess
what a just healthcare system should be comprised of in a truly fair market economy.
Although they agree on issues pertaining to the resources available to individuals in
a fair market, they also disagree on what constitutes justice in regards to how
individuals may spend their allocations. An assessment of the disagreements between
the two reveals that the main consideration for what justice demands of society boils
down to the degree to which individuals are responsible for purchasing their share of
health insurance as well as their fellow citizens . In assessing the current pitfalls of
society that have resulted in an unjust health care system, income and medical
knowledge are at the forefront. In an attempt to hypothesize a just system for health
care, fair income and equal state of the art medical knowledge seem
Stoic Radicalism
Halfway There: Stoic Radicalism and Inaction Stoicism s primary differentiating
feature from other varieties of Greco Roman philosophy is its assertion that the
individual has absolute control over some aspects of their life and absolute
powerlessness to affect others. The thinking that follows is that the only concern for
humans should be that which we individually can control the rest can be regarded as
up to chance and therefore irrelevant to ideal human behavior. Stoicismtherefore
dismisses, even rejects, the ideas of natural superiority and inferiority, constructs that
defined much of the Roman social political system. However, despite this egalitarian
premise, the Stoic emphasis on individual agency irrespective of individual

As something not up to us , social position does not reflect any true qualities of the
supposed superiors and inferiors. Seneca s writing on slavery makes this feeling
explicit. His condemnation of cruelty toward slaves relies on a denial of the
Aristotelian premise of natural slavery. In Seneca s view, slaves are slaves by
accident (Seneca 194), not fault. Accordingly, they should be treated as comrades
or humble friends (Seneca 191), as is moral. He reiterates this belief toward the end
of the essay noting that a slave may be a free man in spirit , and therefore should be
treated no worse than a free man (Seneca 194). Similarly, Epictetus instructs Do not
be joyful about any superiority that is not your own (Epictetus 6), which recalls his
earlier statement that our possessions, our reputations, or our public offices fall into
this category. In application of this view, he draws a distinction between the
statements: I am richer than you; therefore, I am superior to you and I am richer
than you; therefore, my property is superior to yours (Epictetus 44), the former being
invalid and the latter being evidently true. Contained within this view Is necessarily
that property or wealth do not, and cannot make one person better than another, and,
as Epictetus asks earlier in his handbook, What does [wealth and luxury] amount to?
(Epictetus 24), indicating a similar rejection of material hierarchy. Moreover, he
places wealth at odds with preserving your trustworthiness and self respect giving
these internal traits preference over external wealth. This evidences Stoic belief in
the capacitive equivalency of all people. The implication of the statement is that the
truly valuable traits are just as accessible to the poor as to the rich, and potentially
more so because the
Kantianism By Immanuel Kant
Kantianism
Immanuel Kant was interested in the meaning of a good life, mostly doing the right
thing. He was a deontologist rather than a consequentialist, meaning that he
emphasised intent rather than outcome. He claimed that the materially best life is
not the morally best life and that a morally best life is favoured to a materially best
life. Kant started his own philosophy known as Kantianism.
Even though we consider power, wealth, honour, health, and so on to be good, Kant
argues that these things are not unqualifiedly good as they can be abused. In order to
comprehend the meaning of a good life, it is essential to look for the most basic
standard of unqualified good. Kant says that no matter how hard one might try to
guarantee the outcome of their actions, one may never know it; consequently
outcome is not a good contender for unqualified good. He further claims that one
must always be judged on intention rather than outcome or motivation. Therefore his
argument is that only a good will can be unqualifiedly good.
Hume reasons that all practical reasoning is hypothetical, since eventually it is
determined by the desires of the doer. He also says that moral reasoning can only be
practical. Kant disagrees with this and argues that if we think of the conclusions of
practical reason as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are grounded in reason and apply to everyone. For Kant, categorical
imperatives provide us with the superseding reasons to act according to what is
morally mandatory of us. Kant argues that morality is sovereign of one s desires, and
thus moral imperatives must be categorical imperatives which apply with complete
necessity, and whose truth can be identified through reason alone. Kant attempts to
show how his categorical imperatives can be applied, albeit they are an abstract
formula rather than a set of
The Laws Regarding Corporal Punishment
Straus (2001) defined corporal punishment as an act carried out with the intention of
causing a child to experience physical pain, but not injury, for purposes of correction
or control (as cited in Straus Paschall, 2009, p.459). Two of the most prominent and
widespread kinds of corporal punishment include slapping and spanking (Straus
Paschall, 2009, p. 459 460). This paper will analyze the laws regarding corporal
punishment in many countries, the developmental theories such as the behavioral
cognitive, and sociocultural in the context of corporal punishment as well as the
harmful effects of corporal punishment on the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial
development of children in early childhoodwhich ranges from two to six years of age.
In many countries such as China, corporal punishment represents an acceptable and
necessary action to discipline children. However, in other nations such as Austria,
Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Germany, Finland, Israel, Italy, New Zealand, Norway,
and Sweden, corporal punishment is against the law (Berger, 2012, p. 310). Currently,
corporal punishment against children are legal in many U.S. states. Corporal
punishment on children is more common in southern states and families of lower
socioeconomic statuscompared to states in the New England region and families of
higher socioeconomic status (Berger, 2012, p. 310). Corporal punishment has
destructive effects on the physical aspects of early childhood development. As
The Consequences Of Gun Violence
Gun violence is rampant in America. There were 355 mass shootings in just 2016
and many of those shooting was done by one of the most dangerous weapons in
America, the AR 15, a military grade, fully automatic weapon. These guns are really
easy to get too, through gun show loop holes which don t require background checks
and anywhere else varying from state to state. Clearly something needs to be done.
We see places like England and Australia whose guncrime went down after their gun
ban and in light of the aforementioned statistics, the best course of action is
undeniably to follow in their example. No one needs an Ar 15 to protect themselves.
Statements like these are narratives pushed by the left and mainstream media in

The Major Moral Problem That Human s Face Essay
Reading: Matthew 5 8, 19; Little, Naming Good and Evil, Catechism (para. 1700
1986)
According to Little, what is the major moral problem that human s face?
According to Joyce A. Little, the major moral problem that human s face is that
when people attempt to agree upon attacking evil, their different opinions separate
their views on identifying exactly what should be right? Little expresses the
problem as we cannot agree on what would be right or good for society...by people
whose fundamental views of reality are radically opposed to the Church s (23). What
is our true source of knowledge of good and evil?
The true source of knowledge for most people is the tree of the knowledge of good
and evil. But to Joyce A. Little, it s not the knowledge in itself, but the quality of
being able to name something, which is the ability to learn about something in
order to label it. So in other words, according to Little, the knowledge of good and
evil is really the knowledge to label something as good or evil. She writes,
summarizing God s command to Adam and Eve, not to eat from the tree of the
knowledge of good and evil, Do not claim the ability to name or to define what is
good and evil for yourselves, because you do not know enough about me to know
what you are supposed to do to be my image in the world. Only I know how I can
properly be imaged, and there only I can tell you what is good and evil for you (25).
The real sin of Eve and Adam was in claiming for themselves

Perfection In The Film, Directed By Andrew Niccol
I believe Andrew Niccol is trying to say by using this quote is perfection is in our
own perception and everyone has their own purpose. This quote means to think about
everything God has created. You cannot change what He has done, even if you think
it is wrong. Niccol shows this idea throughout the film when humans try to tamper
with God s creation, organize people by their physical capability, and create
inequality.
In the film, humans tried to play God by trying to create the perfect human being. For
example, parents had the option to alter their child s DNA in order to make them as
perfect as possible. Their idealist human was right handed, had perfect vision, had
no heart or physical defect, was brilliant, and so forth. Many parents tried so hard to

Once all four wheels are in contact with the ground, the skater stand on top of the
board with his feet touching the grip tape. There are two different stances a person
can take when riding a skateboard. The nose of the board is the front and will be
thicker and longer than seen in the tail. The tail of the board is considered the back
and is thinner and shorter than the nose. If a skater rides with their right foot
forward (near the nose) this is called a goofie stance, while riding with the left foot
forward is called a regular stance. The normative belief then is for the skater to use
their back foot to accelerate them forwards by pushing of the ground. For the
purpose of this paper, we will imagine a person on top of the board as just described
(in either stance), and disregarding the friction caused by the grip tape.
Newton s first law of motion says that an object in motion or at rest will continue at a
constant velocity (speed or direction) unless acted upon a net external force. A force is
considered a push or a pull acting on an object (given in units of Newtons (N)).
There are two types of forces: a contact force, which two objects are in direct
contact, and field force, which is when two objects exert a push or a pull but are
separated by distance. For this discussion contact forces will be the focus; contact
between the skater and the board and contact with the board and the ground. When a
skater actually initiates the

Courageous and Heroic Women in A Worn Path, The Bean Trees, Little Women,
How It Feels To Be Colored Me, and the The Piano
Women have been heroic and courageous throughout history, though not all of these
heroic (or courageous) adventures have been shown in any way. Some of women s
heroic and courageous adventures are portrayed through short stories, books, and
movies. Eudora Welty s short story A Worn Path
, Barbara Kingsolver s book The Bean
Trees, Louisa May Alcott s book Little Women, Zora Neale Hurston s story How It
Feels To Be Colored Me, and the movie The Pianoall show women going through
their own amazing and heroic adventures. In these stories, the authors and director

After she takes a nap in a ditch a hunter comes by and helps her but ends up

in this instance, but Phoenix does a good job of taking care of the dangers and not

In The Bean Trees the character Taylor goes through some of her own courageous
adventures. When she was still at home and working at the hospital, she had to deal
with a girl named Jolene, someone she knew from her town. Jolene s husband, who
had a bad reputation, had been shot and was now dead. The woman was a little
crazy, telling her husband don t daddy... (Kingsolver 7). This circumstance is not an
adventure of the body but of the mind. Taylor has to be strong, courageous, and smart
to be able to deal with Jolene. This situation was one of the first adventures that
Taylor goes through, and it helps her to deal with later adventures because it made
her stronger.
When Taylor graduated high school, she bought herself a car and intended to
drive out of Pittman County one day and never look back (Kingsolver 10). This
would take a lot of courage in order to leave the place that she has known all of her
life. She doesn t know what she will find when she gets where she s going. She
does manage to drive out of Pittman County, but she has a lot more chances for
courage on the road. While in Oklahoma a lady just gives her a baby to take care of.

Essay Texas Toll Roads
Texas Toll Roads an examination of tolling and alternate measures
Nothing that has occurred in the last several years in Texas has been quite as
controversial as the new and increased usage of toll roads for new road construction.
We have heard many statements that the toll roads are being built as a money making
system for the state (and the Department of Transportation). Statements have also
been made to the effect that the state is selling the state, one length of roadway at a
time; that the current roads could be maintained by the state, with current state
funding levels. The main complaint is that the roads of Texas have always been free,
and should continue to be free. But are these arguments correct?
Texas Roads have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As well, the money which is currently being gathered to fund road maintenance and
building in Texas, is not all going to road maintenance or building.
At this time, 18.4 cents is gathered as a federal gasoline tax, and 20 cents is gathered
as a state gas tax. However, the federal tax is sent to Washington, and we only
receive back 87 cents of every dollar sent (the rest goes to other states). As an
example of this, Rhode Island gets back $2.10 for every dollar in gas tax that they
send to Washington. For the state gas taxes gathered, it is even worse.
Of the money gathered by the state, almost 1 billion dollars is sent to other state
agencies (such as the Department of Public Safety, Education, and other state
colleges and state parks).3 This money is regulated by the state government to go to
these other agencies, which detracts from the department of transportation s ability to
handle road maintenance. So, even before taking into account the increases due to
inflation, the budget of TxDOT is decreased by $1 billion dollars (almost half of
which goes to the state s educational system).
The state is selling itself, one length of roadway at a time.
People seem to want to believe that the state is giving
Use Of The Ipod As A Hard Disk Essay
How can we use the iPod as a hard disk. Many at times our iPods are used as our
storage devices on a certain level. The mode with which we use the iPod to store is
to contain our music playlist, podcasts and some videos. We can also try making an
iPod disk by manually configuring the device s settings. Making an iPoddisk simply
means making your iPod as a hard disk device. You can also use your iPod as a hard
disk to store files, back up your important data or transfer files from one computer to
another.
It is more effective to manually put an iPod in Disk Mode when trouble shooting an

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Gun Buyback Programs
Essay
Gun buyback programs have become a commonplace law enforcement practice
since their creation in the 1970s. These buyback programs are a method of
proactive policing against gun crime and are used as a means by law enforcement
in an effort to curb gun violence. Generally, police offer incentives to community
members in exchange for firearms. These incentives are most commonly money or
gift certificates, but may also be merchandise. The programs rose to popularity in
the 1990s due to widespread public support. However, as far as weapons policies go,
gun buyback programs have been criticized as an ineffective means of curbing or
preventing firearmviolence. Thus, one must ask does the purchase of firearms from
private citizens by law... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The result was a 25% decrease (Cook Ludwig, 2000) in all gun related homicides,
thus showing that the availability of firearms within the population may contribute to
gun violence. By the early 1990s, gun violence in the United States had reached its
peak. Police continued to use gun buyback programs as the chief strategy to curb
gun violence. The concept behind such programs according to a research brief
present before Congress, is that they remove lethal firearms from homes and,
therefore, prevent gun violence by removing the possibility that a firearm may fall
into the hands of a child or adult who may accidentally or intentionally shoot
themselves or others (Carter, 2002). By the early 2000s, a multimillion dollar
national budget had been allocated for gun buyback programs by the U.S
Department of Housing and Urban Development. The buyback programs continued
to be wildly popular across the nation, the sentiment of its supporters expressed in a
statement by President at the time Bill Clinton, claiming every gun turned in
through a buyback program means potentially one less tragedy (Carter, 2002). This
belief buoyed continued support for the programs into the 21st century. By 1999
President Bill Clinton allocated $15 million for nationwide gun buyback programs
(Cook Ludwig, 2000), following the widely accepted concept that the readily
available supply of firearms was to blame for gun violence. By taking unused
Homelessness in Cincinnati Essay
In Ohio (The Tri state), and over the last 17 years, there has been a 160%
population increase. Homelessness has become a problem in the city of Cincinnati.
Many families are homeless because of job layoffs and exhausted unemployment
benefits. Some families are employed but do not earn enough wages to support a
family and pay for adequate housing. Young single mothers can receive welfare
benefits (Aid for Dependent Children) for 36 months. During that time they are
supposed to be furthering their education or preparing to go to work. If neither is
accomplished, the mother will receive medical for the children and food stamps

People are forced to move and find other dwellings. For example, an apartment
building called the metro pole was recently sold for renovation. The people who
reside in the building are the disabled, mentally ill or people difficult to place in
other housing, for some reason or another. The building was built more than 30 years
ago and has 230 two room affordable apartments; in a very convenient location near
downtown Cincinnati, close to bus stops, and shopping. The building will be
renovated to a 160 room lustrous hotel, so that upscale workers can be near their
jobs. In 2008, city council had limited jobs for human service workers for the people

downtown Cincinnati, known as the ghetto. It consists of poor people of all
nationalities and in which most of the homeless live.
Although organizations are working with the Cincinnati Interfaith Worker Center in
helping day labor workers organize to improve job stipulations; wages, and working
conditions(Greater Cincinnati Coalition for the Homeless, 2010), jobs are still not
an option in Cincinnati for the homeless, or those with criminal records. When the
only viable jobs are offered by labor pools, the people are often exploited and treated
with less dignity and have the lowest most devastating working conditions.
Those who can only work part time, or have no transportation must car pool with

Compare And Contrast Pzarro And Hernan Cortes
Hernan Cortes and Francisco Pizarro managed to bring down the administration and
basic structure of the Aztec Empire and Inca Empire with only a few hundred men by
utilizing various advantages that they possessed. Both men had far superior
weaponry than the natives that they fought however the natives could have countered
this with just sheer numbers and utilizing the terrain that they knew so well. What
really allowed these men to dominate their enemies was their strategies and
experience. Both men were also aided by the diseases that they brought with them,
devastating the native population for decades. Hernan Cortes was a Spanish
Conquistadorwho dreamed of riches, a title of nobility, and fame. He planned to
obtain these by leading an expedition into the New World. Spaniard s dreamed that
conquering Mexico would give them great wealth and Cortes as able to do this. He
conquered parts of Mexico and caused the fall of the Aztec Empire. Cortes was so

Due to the native s total isolation from the rest of the civilized world, they had been
prevented from developing immunities against many devastating diseases. These
diseases were carried into the country unaware by the conquistadors from Europe
and Africa. For example, smallpox reached Espanola by 1518 and was carried to
New Spain in 1520. It then moved through Central America and entered Peru by
1527. Wherever the disease passed, it left a detrimental death toll in its wake. There
are many accounts of villages that lost half or more of their population, some even
lost as high as 90% of their population. Many more disease continued to slowly
decimate the natives, such as measles typhus, influenza, yellow fever, malaria
diphtheria and the bubonic plague. Within the next 100 year of disease, the native s
population became less than 10% what it was in the

Research Paper On Sally Ride
Have you ever wondered how people can get the courage and talent to revolutionize
the career they are in? Sally Ride has definitely had that experience. She started this
adventure when she went to Stanford University, majoring in physics in her home
state, California. She took a chance for a NASA job and got accepted in. With
determination and hardwork, she managed to be the first American woman into
space. She changed women s reputations and the way women were looked at for
having hardworking careers. She started several organizations and inspiration to
fellow girls and women. Sally ridewas an inspirational, determined, astronaut. She is
best known for being the first American woman to fly in space. She applied to be
an astronaut in 1977 in Nasa s astronaut program. It was an ad in an advertisement.
It was the first time that women were invited to apply to the astronaut program.
(Dunbar). The first time inviting women was a very big deal, so getting in was
even bigger. So she began to apply with courage and a dream of going into space.
Ride ended up beating 1,000 other people for the job in the program. Through this
job, she had tons of training for robotic arms and the equipment. The training was
very constant throughout her time there because of the big responsibility of going
and deploying satellites through space. She was chosen to be a mission specialist
and was in charge of the robotic arm. The robotic arm is the position to deploy
satellites across space. She
Polygamy
Is Polygamy Socially Acceptable?
The reality TV show Sister Wives follows the lives of a polygamist family of 22.
The husband, Cody Brown, has 4 wives: Meri, Janelle, Christine, and the latest
addition Robyn. The number of polygamists in North America, estimated at 50,000
or more, is doubling every decade. Polygamy by definition is a marriage that includes
more than two partners. When a man is married to more than one woman at the
same time it is called polygany and when a woman is married to more than one
man at the same time it is called polyandry. Polygamy is not a new practice, in fact
it has been going on for centuries. However, with recent growing publicity from
shows like Sister Wives, more and more people are becoming aware of ... Show more

However, if a woman agrees to marry into such a family she should be prepared for
these feelings.
It has also been said that polygamy undermines the institution of marriage and the
idea of devotion and giving oneself wholly to their spouse. It is not possible for one
man to give himself wholly to four different women which means each wife is really
only married to one fourth of a man. The husband is often accused of being selfish
and greedy because he is not satisfied with his family and he feels the need to go out
and find another new woman and more children to add to it.
Polygamy also has many negative effects on the children. Often times the wives
will be upset and in a bad mood because they are missing the husband or are jealous
for some reason and the kids suffer from it. Also it is hard for the children to make
friends when they know about there lifestyle. Perhaps some of the kids don t
believe in this lifestyle and don t want to be a part of it, well they don t have a choice
until they are of age.
The practice of polygamy is a very controversial topic and many people disagree
with it but all and all America is a free country and if people choose to live this way
than that is their choice and no one should be able to take that away from them. As
long as they are not negatively
Sustainable Improvements Of The Uk
Sustainable Improvements
The UK has thousands of beautiful period properties that were constructed from
brick and timber with minimal insulation, and as a result produce high carbon
emissions. As a government department will occupy the property it should serve as
an example to the public of how such wonderful period properties can be made
sustainable without impacting their historical and visual appearances. In order to
make this property more energy efficient, sustainable and in accordance with
government legislation, a number of improvements can be made.
Since the property is located in the Fleet Street Conservation Area in the City of
London, the following improvements may require planning permission:
a)Hybrid solar panels by Naked Energy where both photovoltaic and thermal energy
outputs are combined. The benefit is reduced installation time and cost while
maximizing the usable installation area . This would also include replacing the
whole heating and water system. To ensure planning permission is approved the solar
panels should not be easily visible from the street.
b)Windows should be replaced with double glazed windows which resemble the
existing windows
A number of additional energy saving improvements can be made that do not require
planning permission:
a)External wall insulation is not possible due to the property being in a conservation
area, however insulation can be achieved internally on walls and floors, i.e. by using
aerogel and by adding

An Definition Of Moral Theory
Another moral theory, also born of Deontological Perspectives, comes from WD
Ross. In contrast to Kant, who stated that moral positions can be deduced by reason
and are absolutely binding, Ross believes that we determine moral positions through
intuition of the rightness or wrongness on the action. This intuition allows us to
determine what our duties are while these duties are not dependent on the outcomes
or circumstances, but how we rank these duties is dependent on a situation. In turn,
this creates what Ross refers to as Prima Facieduties. Prima Facie duties are duties
that are obligatory duties that can be trumped by other duties depending on our
situation. Ross gives an example of seven of these prima facie duties in his
writings: beneficence, non maleficence, justice, self improvement, fidelity,
reparation, and gratitude. These duties arise because we intuit them to be true and
binding duties. In Ross s view, all of these duties are binding, but he does not
exclude, as Kant does that these duties may overlap and run contrary to one another
in any given situation. We can only act in accordance with what our perception is
of the situation and try to do our best, but we may often fail as a result. While this
theory is superior to Kant in that it does allow for more universal applicability and
wiggle room to fit various cultures, the main issue with Ross s theory is that it relies
on the intuition of flawed humans to determine self evident duties and does not
Loss of Innocence in Lord of the Flies Essay
Loss of Innocence in Lord of the Flies
Within the novel innocence is progressively lost through the boys. The boys were
placed in a situation where they had no other choice but to grow up, and grow up
fast. These boys were put in a very traumatic situation and they had to learn on their
own and from each other how to survive and almost create a thriving society all on
their own. Slowly they learn that their needs to be a leader, but there are no adults to
precede the role of authority. Therefore the children resume power and take the role
of authority. All these things make the boys lose their innocenceand become very
violent. No one is completely innocent and everyone has the ability to turn violent,

They have never had such power to control people. This causes complete chaos and
lots of violence breaks out due to the feud between Ralph and Jack. The problem
with children resuming the roles of adults is that they do not have the experience
or knowledge to resume these roles. There is a major lack of authority and power
on the island. What happens is that both Jack and Ralph resume authority which
divides up the group of boys. I m chief, said Ralph, because you chose me. And we
were going to keep the fire going. Now you run after food (150). This is Ralph
claiming his authority. I ought to be chief, said Jack with simple arrogance, because
I m chapter chorister and head boy. I can sing C sharp. (22). This is Jack claiming
authority. Both boys believe that they have authority and they do not get along with
one another. Jack turns quite violent in the novel and is violent towards the other
boys. The violence that the boys have towards each other is a major part of their
loss of innocence. I believe that the boys in Lord of the Flies suffered from loss of
innocence in a very fast and drastic way. They had to learn how to move on from
such a tragic and traumatizing situation and learn on the spot how to survive as well
as well as how to thrive as a society and work together. Although the boys might not
have succeeded in their objectives, but the efforts made to work towards these

Structure Of A Five Paragraph Essay

  • 1. Structure Of A Five Paragraph Essay Writing an essay on the structure of a five-paragraph essay might seem deceptively simple at first glance. After all, it's a topic that appears straightforward, as it revolves around a well-known and widely used essay format. However, delving into the intricacies of constructing a cohesive and effective five-paragraph essay reveals that it's not as easy as it may seem. To start with, the challenge lies in avoiding clichГ©s and banalities when discussing the structure. The five-paragraph essay is a familiar and often-taught format, and the risk of producing a generic or formulaic essay on the topic is high. Finding a fresh perspective or presenting the information in a way that engages the reader can be a significant hurdle. Another difficulty arises when trying to strike the right balance between providing basic information and delving into more nuanced aspects of the topic. It's essential to cater to a diverse audience, from those unfamiliar with the concept to those seeking a deeper understanding. This necessitates careful consideration of the level of detail and complexity in the explanations. Moreover, maintaining a coherent and logical flow throughout the essay is crucial. While discussing the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, it's imperative to demonstrate the interconnectedness of these elements in a manner that is both informative and engaging. This requires a thoughtful approach to transitions and a clear organization of ideas. The challenge intensifies when attempting to offer practical tips and examples to aid the reader in implementing the knowledge gained. Striking a balance between theoretical insights and practical applications can be demanding, as it involves foreseeing potential questions and addressing them preemptively. In conclusion, writing an essay on the structure of a five-paragraph essay involves navigating the fine line between providing fundamental information and offering valuable insights that go beyond the basics. It requires a keen awareness of the audience's needs and an ability to present the information in a manner that is both informative and engaging. For those seeking assistance with essays or similar tasks, various resources are available, such as online writing services like HelpWriting.net. Professionals can provide guidance and support, ensuring that essays meet the necessary criteria for quality and effectiveness. Structure Of A Five Paragraph EssayStructure Of A Five Paragraph Essay
  • 2. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Immediate Syntact Analysis Immediate constituent analysis (IC analysis) was presented by American structural linguist Leonard Bloomfield in 1933 (EncyclopГ¦dia Britannica, 1998). According to him, it refers to a system of grammatical analysis that divides sentences into successive layers, or constituents, until, in the final layer, each constituent consists of only a wordor meaningful part of a word. (EncyclopГ¦dia Britannica, 1998) With advantages and disadvantages, it makes multiple influences on linguistics. On the one hand, by revealing syntactic structures of sentences, it can facilitate the study of syntactic relations, the study of the recursiveness and creativity of language, as well as the study of syntactic ambiguity. However, on the other hand, it is difficult to employ this approach to analyze certain complex sentences in practice and to reveal certain syntactic ambiguity. This essay will introduce... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From the above explanations and examples, it has been proven that the IC analysis is beneficial to the study of the three syntactic relations in that it can clearly divide sentences into hierarchical structures. What is more, the second advantage of the IC analysis is that it is helpful to the study of the recursiveness and creativity of language. By definition, recursiveness means to extend sentences by conjoining and embedding to form hypotactic or paratactic sentence structures (Hu, 2011). Together with openness, it reveals the creativity of language (Hu, 2011). Take the sentence The girl is watering the flower. (Tian Zhao, 2007) for

Background of PetSmart Operating in 1197 stores in North America, PetSmart is the largest specialty retailer of services and solutions for the lifetime needs of pets (PetSmart.com.PetSmart Corporate: Investor Relations. 2012). The business of pets and pet care continues to be a thriving and growing industry; the American Pet Products Association, or APPA, estimated the calendar year 2010 market at approximately $47.7 billion, an increase of more than 180% since calendar year 1994 (PetSmart.com. Investor Relations. Annual Report. 2010). The industry s size and scope provides opportunities for a range of business to compete for the pet owner s discretionary spending; as such PetSmart must constantly innovate and offer consumers value across their business model. The ongoing streamlining of the company s value chain offers insight into two big ideas of economics: markets and voluntary exchange, and choices and incentives. PetSmart PetSmart has been in operation since 1987 with a mission to serve pet owners, termed pet parents by the company across multiple product and service platforms (PetSmart.com.PetSmart Corporate: Company Overview. 2012). PetSmart s goal is to capture an ever increasing share of the dynamic pet market, which has 62% of households in the United States owning a pet, equating to more than 71 million homes (PetSmart.com. Investor Relations. Annual Report. 2010); by providing pet owners differentiated choices and value across key categories: food and treats, supplies and

Slave Narrative Reading Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass I gathered that it is a slave narrative and has some of the same characteristics as From Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl such as in both of the stories neither of the slaves really knew a lot about their self, and both were separated from family. The narrative is about a boy named Douglass that is a slave. However, Douglass is not a typical slave as he used his resources to teach himself how to read and write about freedom and slaves. Douglass like any other slave was passed down from master to master and was whipped and tormented daily. As time went by the torment Douglass experienced by his master Covey resulted in Douglass not interested in reading any more but trying to managed

Bishop s Same Gender Couples Adoption Bishop Disapproves Same Gender Couples Adoption Rights in Czech Republic In response to a change in the Czech Republic s law now affirming the rights of LGB people adopting children, Bishop Vaclav Maly chairman of the Justice and Peace Commission of the Czech Bishops Conference stated: The model of the family, constituted by a man and a woman, has been proved over thousands of years and shown by numerous expert studies to serve a child s physical and psychological needs best, according to an article on The Tablet. In June of 2016, the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic struck down the law that kept LGB people in same gender partnerships from adopting children. The Czech Republic, where Catholicism is the dominant religion, has seen slow change from their landmark decision in 2006 that created a registered partnership class for same gender couples. Registered partnerships are similar to marriages but with less rights, such as until recently not having the right to adopt children. The previous law, however, allowed LGB people not in registered partnerships to adopt and only restricted those in registered partnerships. The court s June decision allows one member of a registered partnership to adopt but does not yet allow both partners to hold joint custody. In a statement, Bishop Vaclav Maly said that recent increases in child abuse and neglect in the Czech Republic required increased dialogue on the country s adoption and foster care. After researching

Cambridge University Press) Another threat comes from smaller expeditions that are becoming increasingly common by individuals and small parties. Antarctica requires careful planning and a series of fail safe rescue procedures if anyone gets into difficulty. These smaller expeditions sometimes fail to do this adequately and resort to humanitarian requests for aid from shipping or nearby national bases when they get into difficulty. In recent years for example a small helicopter (totally unsuitable for the task) crashed into the sea off the Antarctica Peninsula requiring rescue. There have so far been no major pollution incidents or losses of life in Antarctica as a result of tourism, though there was a very close call in November 2007 with the holing and subsequent sinking by an iceberg of the M/V Explorer in the Brans field Strait. Fortunately for the passengers and crew of the Explorer the collision occurred in calm conditions, so everyone was able to get off the ship safely and into lifeboats. (Ref: Crossley, Louise. • 10. Dominion of Canada s Foundation Ever since I moved to Canada, I have constantly been taught about arguably the single most important event in the country s history Confederation. In 1867, the Fathers of Confederation helped ratify the first British North America Act, the culminating product of a hard fought political process which united Upper and Lower Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. The study of the Dominion of Canada s formation is typically fixated on the politicians roles (3), and this deficient scope is a significant reason as to why Andrew Smith s monograph, British Business and Canadian Confederation, manifested itself so clearly to me. As I am studying Canadian history through a business context, this book seemed quite appropriate Instead of focusing on the usual suspects, such as the American threat or Anglophone Francophone relations, Smith seeks to analyze the often neglected influence that British businessmen had on Confederation. As such, the piece s overriding argument is that had there not been support from prominent British investors, Canada s landmark federal unification would not have taken place, whether on July 1, 1867 or otherwise (3). By overtly and exhaustively presenting the prevailing contention in the opening paragraphs, Smith leaves no doubt in the reader s mind as to what the following chapters contain and validate. The British North American economy was significantly operated by the aforementioned investors (21). Due to economic crisis in the early 1860s (44), they

I will be able to apply these skills to future skills and become a more successful student. According to the Census and Statistics department, the cross border marriage between HK men and mainland women was several times of increase since 2001 to 2006 . Although no direct relationship, but it is likely that the cross border birth is in a trend of increase, too. Sadly that the Government has ignored these families. First of all, as in the mainland maternity case in the Court mentioned above, the HK father has to pay non local fee for his wife s obstetric services in a HK public hospital, and then the right of abode of his babies will be deprived under the recent rule enforced. The justice issue is not only a comparison among these families and those purely HK parents , but also appear on those HK mothers and non local fathers, who are not under the exclusion blanket of obstetric services, too. So both are mixed families but why the latter families enjoy the right while the former are deprived? If Ethics defines what is good for individual and society, and being justice is the concept of moral rightness of an individual , then it is unethical to be injustice and depriving one s rights. In this case, the HK Government is applying tighter rules on mainland mothers , at the same time restricting those cross border families and also ignoring the justice in
  • 19. The Themes Of St. Augustine s Confessions By Saint Augustine Confessions In the book Confessions by Saint Augustine, there are several themes throughout that describes Augustine s thoughts and opinions of how to live responsibly. Augustine believes that God is the reason for everything good that happens to one s life, which you are to praise him for. Augustine goes through some tough situations, which he uses his life as a standard way of living or an example of what others go through in their lifetime. He plainly states on several occasions that in everything you do needs to be for the glory of God. This essay will outline the main themes referred in the passage of Book X, which are find God later in one s life, seeking pleasure in worldly things, and understanding where the beauty of the world comes from. Also, the essay will analyze his worldview that you shouldn t find pleasure in worldly possessions and to praise God, and how it helps others live or have a responsible life. There are several themes within the passage that shows Augustine s worldview. For example, in the first line of the passage, he understands the concept of loving God later in life: I have learnt to love you late (Conf. X.27). This quote suggests that Augustine is now able to see why is mother was so skeptical in giving him is baptism early in his childhood. He commits to sin on numerous occasions, but comes back to find God again. In Book II, Augustine s actions are paralleled with the prodigal son: I strayed still farther from you and you did not restrain me. I was tossed and spilled, floundering in the broiling sea of my fornication, and you said no word (Conf. II.1). Augustine acted just as the prodigal son did by straying from God and being taken over by worldly pleasures. As in the story, Augustine does come back to God and devotes himself to Him more than ever. It can be reasonably inferred that God rejoices more in the people who were lost and then found their salvation than to always be faithful towards Him. This suggests that God wants people to try and do it on their own, making mistakes after mistakes, and then hitting rock bottom to perhaps humble one in order to get their full attention to be placed on Him; this is what a responsible self looks like. In this section, the theme

Forgiveness In The Novel Disgrace Disgrace is a novel by the Nobel prize winning writer Coetzee set in the post apartheid period in South Africa, a period when people were trying their best to learn to forgive the past wrong done by the oppressive, ethnic government. The question of what it means to forgive is raised in the novel. Forgiveness is seen in the South African society as something conditional, the wrongdoers have to do something so that they can be forgiven. The Promotion of National Unity and Reconciliation Act 34 of 1995 established a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) to help those victims who were uncomfortable to forgive. It forged a new relationship among amnesty, trust, and forgivenessin forgiving, people are not being asked to forget, but to remember, so that such atrocities will not happen again. In this essay, I will first talk about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission so as to criticise its presumption of the significance of truth revelation. I will support my notion with reference to some scenes in the novel Disgrace and point out some characteristics of forgiveness. Then I will put forward what I think it means to forgive a past wrong and finally question the necessity of the existence of the Commission. In the TRC, the significance of truth is ... The American Health Insurance System In attempting to remedy the unjust nature of the American health insurance system, one cannot determine what a just system should be based on the current assessment of society. Inequalities within the current system cannot foster discussion for what we believe is justice because preconceived notions cloud the judgment of even the foremost health policy intellectuals. Many philosophers therefore turn to creating hypothetical societies where these inequalities do not exist as a means to facilitate the discussion as to what true justice requires. Two such individuals, Ronald Dworkin and Charles Fried, have constructed such situations as a means to assess what a just healthcare system should be comprised of in a truly fair market economy. Although they agree on issues pertaining to the resources available to individuals in a fair market, they also disagree on what constitutes justice in regards to how individuals may spend their allocations. An assessment of the disagreements between the two reveals that the main consideration for what justice demands of society boils down to the degree to which individuals are responsible for purchasing their share of health insurance as well as their fellow citizens . As something not up to us , social position does not reflect any true qualities of the supposed superiors and inferiors. Seneca s writing on slavery makes this feeling explicit. His condemnation of cruelty toward slaves relies on a denial of the Aristotelian premise of natural slavery. In Seneca s view, slaves are slaves by accident (Seneca 194), not fault. Accordingly, they should be treated as comrades or humble friends (Seneca 191), as is moral. He reiterates this belief toward the end of the essay noting that a slave may be a free man in spirit , and therefore should be treated no worse than a free man (Seneca 194). Similarly, Epictetus instructs Do not be joyful about any superiority that is not your own (Epictetus 6), which recalls his earlier statement that our possessions, our reputations, or our public offices fall into this category. In application of this view, he draws a distinction between the statements: I am richer than you; therefore, I am superior to you and I am richer than you; therefore, my property is superior to yours (Epictetus 44), the former being invalid and the latter being evidently true. Contained within this view Is necessarily that property or wealth do not, and cannot make one person better than another, and, as Epictetus asks earlier in his handbook, What does [wealth and luxury] amount to? Moreover, he places wealth at odds with preserving your trustworthiness and self respect giving these internal traits preference over external wealth. This evidences Stoic belief in the capacitive equivalency of all people. The implication of the statement is that the truly valuable traits are just as accessible to the poor as to the rich, and potentially more so because the

He was a deontologist rather than a consequentialist, meaning that he emphasised intent rather than outcome. He claimed that the materially best life is not the morally best life and that a morally best life is favoured to a materially best life. Kant started his own philosophy known as Kantianism. Even though we consider power, wealth, honour, health, and so on to be good, Kant argues that these things are not unqualifiedly good as they can be abused. In order to comprehend the meaning of a good life, it is essential to look for the most basic standard of unqualified good. Kant says that no matter how hard one might try to guarantee the outcome of their actions, one may never know it; consequently outcome is not a good contender for unqualified good. He further claims that one must always be judged on intention rather than outcome or motivation. Therefore his argument is that only a good will can be unqualifiedly good. Little, the major moral problem that human s face is that when people attempt to agree upon attacking evil, their different opinions separate their views on identifying exactly what should be right? Little expresses the problem as we cannot agree on what would be right or good for society...by people whose fundamental views of reality are radically opposed to the Church s (23). What is our true source of knowledge of good and evil? The true source of knowledge for most people is the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. But to Joyce A. Little, it s not the knowledge in itself, but the quality of being able to name something, which is the ability to learn about something in order to label it. So in other words, according to Little, the knowledge of good and evil is really the knowledge to label something as good or evil. She writes, summarizing God s command to Adam and Eve, not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, Do not claim the ability to name or to define what is good and evil for yourselves, because you do not know enough about me to know what you are supposed to do to be my image in the world. Only I know how I can properly be imaged, and there only I can tell you what is good and evil for you (25). The real sin of Eve and Adam was in claiming for themselves

Poisonwood Bible Thesis Moving cities is hard enough but picking up your family and leaving the only country you have ever known to go to a continent where you do not speak the language or understand the customs has to be completely mind boggling. The novel The Poisonwood Bible opens with Orleanna Price describing the sensory input of the Congolese Jungle. As a reader her description allows you to close your eyes and see the Congolese Jungle as if you are there walking through it too. The Congolese Jungle sounds like an unforgiving place which adds a suspenseful sense to the already questionable beginning. This quote means to think about everything God has created. You cannot change what He has done, even if you think it is wrong. Niccol shows this idea throughout the film when humans try to tamper with God s creation, organize people by their physical capability, and create inequality. In the film, humans tried to play God by trying to create the perfect human being. For example, parents had the option to alter their child s DNA in order to make them as perfect as possible. On the bottom side of the board, you can see the trucks (the white metal on either end) that connect the wheels and allow the skateboard to move from side to side. The angle of the shot shows three out of the four wheels (the fourth cannot be seen) that are attached to the axle ends of the trucks. Once all four wheels are in contact with the ground, the skater stand on top of the board with his feet touching the grip tape. There are two different stances a person can take when riding a skateboard. The nose of the board is the front and will be thicker and longer than seen in the tail. The tail of the board is considered the back and is thinner and shorter than the nose. If a skater rides with their right foot forward (near the nose) this is called a goofie stance, while riding with the left foot forward is called a regular stance. The normative belief then is for the skater to use their back foot to accelerate them forwards by pushing of the ground. For the purpose of this paper, we will imagine a person on top of the board as just described (in either stance), and disregarding the friction caused by the grip tape. Newton s first law of motion says that an object in motion or at rest will continue at a constant velocity (speed or direction) unless acted upon a net external force. A force is considered a push or a pull acting on an object (given in units of Newtons (N)). There are two types of forces: a contact force, which two objects are in direct contact, and field force, which is when two objects exert a push or a pull but are separated by distance. For this discussion contact forces will be the focus; contact between the skater and the board and contact with the board and the ground. When a skater actually initiates the

By the early 1990s, gun violence in the United States had reached its peak. Police continued to use gun buyback programs as the chief strategy to curb gun violence. The concept behind such programs according to a research brief present before Congress, is that they remove lethal firearms from homes and, therefore, prevent gun violence by removing the possibility that a firearm may fall into the hands of a child or adult who may accidentally or intentionally shoot themselves or others (Carter, 2002). By the early 2000s, a multimillion dollar national budget had been allocated for gun buyback programs by the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development. The buyback programs continued to be wildly popular across the nation, the sentiment of its supporters expressed in a statement by President at the time Bill Clinton, claiming every gun turned in through a buyback program means potentially one less tragedy (Carter, 2002). This belief buoyed continued support for the programs into the 21st century. By 1999 President Bill Clinton allocated $15 million for nationwide gun buyback programs (Cook Ludwig, 2000), following the widely accepted concept that the readily available supply of firearms was to blame for gun violence. • 55. An Definition Of Moral Theory Another moral theory, also born of Deontological Perspectives, comes from WD Ross. In contrast to Kant, who stated that moral positions can be deduced by reason and are absolutely binding, Ross believes that we determine moral positions through intuition of the rightness or wrongness on the action. This intuition allows us to determine what our duties are while these duties are not dependent on the outcomes or circumstances, but how we rank these duties is dependent on a situation. In turn, this creates what Ross refers to as Prima Facieduties. Prima Facie duties are duties that are obligatory duties that can be trumped by other duties depending on our situation. Ross gives an example of seven of these prima facie duties in his writings: beneficence, non maleficence, justice, self improvement, fidelity, reparation, and gratitude. These duties arise because we intuit them to be true and binding duties. In Ross s view, all of these duties are binding, but he does not exclude, as Kant does that these duties may overlap and run contrary to one another in any given situation. We can only act in accordance with what our perception is of the situation and try to do our best, but we may often fail as a result. While this theory is superior to Kant in that it does allow for more universal applicability and wiggle room to fit various cultures, the main issue with Ross s theory is that it relies on the intuition of flawed humans to determine self evident duties and does not
