Sandon Rogers and Helen Gabriel of the City of Suffolk Public Works Department and Parks & Recreation received awards from the American Public Works Association for two projects. Rogers received an award for intersection improvement projects on Bridge Road and Bennetts Pasture Road/Bridge Road and Lee Farm Lane. Rogers and Gabriel received an honorable mention for the Suffolk Seaboard Coastline Trail, an 11-mile multiuse trail. The projects improved safety and traffic flow as well as providing a recreational asset. Rogers and Gabriel will be recognized at the APWA Mid-Atlantic Chapter's annual conference in May.

Pohick Creek Tributary Stream Restoration Project

There is recurring congestion Hunter Mill Road from Sunrise Valley Drive to the Colvin Run Bridge during the morning and evening peak hours. The congestion is heavily concentrated at the intersections of Sunset Hills Road and the west bound Dulles Toll Road ramps at Hunter Mill Road. These two intersections are closely spaced and constrained by the existing bridge. The number of vehicles using Hunter Mill Road is forecasted to increase in the future. The opening of the Wiehle Avenue-Reston East Metrorail station in 2014, new development anticipated in Reston, and an increase in background traffic associated with development elsewhere in the region are likely to increase vehicular traffic in this area. This study will look at alternatives to mitigate the existing conditions and future conditions to ensure traffic can move efficiently through the intersections.

These two intersections are closely spaced and constrained by the existing bridge. The number of vehicles using Hunter Mill Road is forecasted to increase in the future. The opening of the Wiehle Avenue-Reston East Metrorail station in 2014, new development anticipated in Reston, and an increase in background traffic associated with development elsewhere in the region are likely to increase vehicular traffic in this area. This study will look at alternatives to mitigate the existing conditions and future conditions to ensure traffic can move efficiently through the intersections.

The best available, up-to-date information on all fishing and related vessels that appear on the illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing vessel lists published by Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) and related organisations. The aim of the site is to improve the effectiveness of the original IUU lists as a tool for a wide variety of stakeholders to better understand and combat illegal fishing and broader fisheries crime.

Vessels that have been IUU listed in the past and subsequently delisted (for example because of a change in ownership, or because the vessel is no longer in service) are also retained on the site, so that the site contains a full historic record of IUU listed fishing vessels.
Unlike the IUU lists published on individual RFMO websites, which may update vessel details infrequently or not at all, the Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List is kept up to date with the best available information regarding changes to vessel identity, flag state, ownership, location, and operations.

This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.

Street Name Changes
- 1. Regular Agenda Item #2 Street Name Changes along the Greens Prairie Road West and Greens Prairie Trail Corridors July 25, 2019
- 2. Purpose • Proposed street name changes developed in consultation with Brazos County 9-1-1. • Purpose is to enhance emergency response by reducing confusion regarding the current street name configuration of the Greens Prairie Road West and Greens Prairie Trail corridors.
- 3. Process • May 3rd – Traffic Management Team, a multi-department staff committee, recommended proceeding with the proposed street name changes. • May 21st – Council Transportation & Mobility Committee affirmed to continue forward with consideration of the proposal. • June 11th – Brazos County Commissioners Court concurred with moving forward with the proposal. A portion of the street name changes are outside the City limits. • July 15th – Notification letters sent to property owners, residents/tenants, and seven home owners associations along the corridors informing them of proposed changes and Council meeting date for their consideration.

Recommendation Staff recommends approval of the proposed street name changes. • As parts of Areas 3 and 4 are outside the City limits, the proposed ordinance has a condition that those areas inside the City limits will become effective only if the Brazos County Commissioners Court approves the street name changes in those areas as well. Upcoming Items • The Brazos County Commissioners Court is scheduled to consider the portions of Areas 3 and 4 outside the City limits at their Tuesday, July 30th meeting. • If the street name changes are approved, a follow-up notification will be mailed to the affected property owners and residents/tenants to confirm the changes are being implemented.
