Graffiti can be defined as any painting, drawing or writing of
something on the surface of in a public place. Graffiti is illegal
everywhere in Australia, including the City of Melbourne. (see
Graffiti Management plan 2014-2018)
Street art is artistic work done with the permission of the
person who owns the wall and the permission of the local
council. With the proper permission street art is legal in
Melbourne.
The council has a street art permit process which enables
property owners and tenants to get permission to let street
artists decorate their walls.
The term “Street art” covers a wider range of media and is
more connected with graphic design.
A design cut into heavy paper or cardboard, then spray-painted on to a
wall or other surface.

What do you need to take into account when designing Street Art for this Unit.
•The message you intend to convey
•Using Stencils and spray paint
•Using paste-ups
•Working on an original photograph to create the illusion of Street Art in a public space.
(minimum of 6 required for consideration)
Considerations : images, text and style
Limitations : Surface, time, weather and space
OHS (Safety practices)
Wear a smock (students must bring their own) , mask, goggles , gloves
All spray painting will be done outside to provide maximum ventilation.

  • 8. Graffiti can be defined as any painting, drawing or writing of something on the surface of in a public place. Graffiti is illegal everywhere in Australia, including the City of Melbourne. (see Graffiti Management plan 2014-2018) Street art is artistic work done with the permission of the person who owns the wall and the permission of the local council. With the proper permission street art is legal in Melbourne. The council has a street art permit process which enables property owners and tenants to get permission to let street artists decorate their walls. The term “Street art” covers a wider range of media and is more connected with graphic design.
  • 9. A design cut into heavy paper or cardboard, then spray-painted on to a wall or other surface.
  • 10. TASK 1D: WHAT IS WHAT? • •

Coming up: Create your own street art piece: Specifications What do you need to take into account when designing Street Art for this Unit. •The message you intend to convey •Using Stencils and spray paint •Using paste-ups •Working on an original photograph to create the illusion of Street Art in a public space. (minimum of 6 required for consideration) Considerations : images, text and style Limitations : Surface, time, weather and space OHS (Safety practices) Wear a smock (students must bring their own) , mask, goggles , gloves All spray painting will be done outside to provide maximum ventilation.
  • 13. • • • • • • • • • • • • • Composition •The arrangement of the subject matter in the artwork. •This also relates to where the elements and principles of art are used in the artwork and for what purpose. •It considers how all parts work together to create an overall visual effect.
