3. Public Art Proposal Assignment
1. River Valley Art Center will renovate the memorial garden and would
like to have a new monument for the six residents who were lost in an
airline crash. Students design the potential monument and its plan.
2. Students research open calls for public art in websites such as
publicartist.org. Once students pick an open call, research the location
ex. The local history, popular activities in the site, whose property, etc…
Create a proposal with an image using Meshmixer and Photoshop and
200 words your statement.
4. Day 1: Monument Design Sketches
• Research about River Valley Arts Center and its Memorial Garden
• Sketch designs of a new monument to honor the six residents who
were lost in an airline crash, including then Arts Center president
Gordon McLerran.
• Write a 200 word statement (draft)
5. Day 2:Finalize the design and statement
• Finalize design and statement considering the instructor’s feedback
6. Day 3: Research Open Call

7. Day 3: Brain Storming
• What is the subject matter for the public art?
• Why the institution/ city want to have the public art?
• Research the history of the institution/city
• List the feature of the city
• What could be your motif for the public art?
• What material would the public art possibly be built with?
• Sketch 2 potential designs for each open call
*In the meeting, we will discuss your ideas and sketches
8. Day 4: Create a maquette
• Choose one potential design and refine its design
• Create a maquette (may use any material, the size must be more than
5x5x5 cubic inch.)
• Create an imaginary creature *following the instructions in the next
slide
9. Day 5: Scan the maquette and smooth the
form

Create an imaginary Create following the instructions below:

1. Use existing samples in Meshmixer
2. Blend at least three different creature features and one geometric form into one figure model.
3. Use select tool, sculpt tool, and meshmixer tool
4. Paint the figure
5. Take a screen shot of the digital 3D model from front, side, top, and 45 degree and submit the
images on the BB
