Developing your own personal research
agenda is a strategic and essential step in
advancing your academic and
professional career, contributing to the
growth of knowledge, and making a
meaningful impact in your chosen field.
RESEARCH AGENDA
• A framework for the direction and types of
studies that must be completed to address an
overarching problem or area of interest.
• Identifies research priorities which will lead to
more successful research, outlining a clear
framework for making decisions about future
research activities.
RESEARCH AGENDA
• Articulating a research agenda for your studies
would improve the focus of your work.
• Enables you to become an expert in a
particular niche or field.
• Allows you to make meaningful contributions
to the existing body of knowledge.
• Explain how your prior experiences
conducting research has shaped your
approach to new undertakings.
RESEARCH AGENDA
• "Agenda" implies forward-looking speculation.
• A Research Agenda is a type of “road map” for
moving ahead.
• However, drafting a Research Agenda starts
with looking back at all the work you've done
(previous publications, grants, seminar
papers, etc.).
Steps in Developing
Research Agenda
• First: locate your disciplinary position and interest.
What specific sub-field of research are you operating within?
What specific idea or issue do you want to explore?
• Second: narrate your own approach and methods.
What do you prioritize or value when conducting research?
What methods do you use when gathering and analyzing data?
Reflecting upon previous research is useful
Try to locate the common methodology that is used in your previous work

• Third: summarize how current scholarship syncs
up with your research interest and priorities.
What have other researchers said about your interest and
methodology?
Are there recurring ideas that keep re-appearing throughout this
research?
A recurring idea can be:
 An analytical process used by researchers
 A limitation researchers must negotiate
 An issue/problem that researchers want to solve
 An opportunity that researchers want to build upon
 A keystone author or text in a given field

• Fourth: explain how you plan to build upon the
ideas, concepts, or key terms you identified in
Step Three. Show how your research can evolve
ideas and concepts
What specific projects do you plan to undertake?
How can these projects contribute to the trends you've
identified?
• Fifth: clarify the benefits of undertaking this
research.
What do you hope to accomplish?
What do we gain from undertaking your research?
What field(s) would benefit from your research?

  • 3. WHY CONDUCT RESEARCH BASED ON YOUR EXPERTISE AND QUALIFICATIONS? The importance of conducting research based on the expertise and qualifications of researchers lies in the assurance of high-quality, credible, and impactful contributions to knowledge and society.
  • 9. • Persons engaged in research involving human participants shall have moral fortitude, scientific competence, social awareness, cultural sensitivity, intellectual humility, vigilance, and preparedness in safety issues. • The researcher shall have the training, ability, and resources to conduct the proposed study. • The researcher shall be knowledgeable of the literature on the research topic Qualification of Researcher/s National Ethical Guidelines For Health And Health-related Research 2017

  • 13. DEVELOPING A PERSONAL RESEACH AGENDA Developing your own personal research agenda is a strategic and essential step in advancing your academic and professional career, contributing to the growth of knowledge, and making a meaningful impact in your chosen field.
  • 14. RESEARCH AGENDA • A framework for the direction and types of studies that must be completed to address an overarching problem or area of interest. • Identifies research priorities which will lead to more successful research, outlining a clear framework for making decisions about future research activities.
  • 15. RESEARCH AGENDA • Articulating a research agenda for your studies would improve the focus of your work. • Enables you to become an expert in a particular niche or field. • Allows you to make meaningful contributions to the existing body of knowledge. • Explain how your prior experiences conducting research has shaped your approach to new undertakings.
  • 16. RESEARCH AGENDA • "Agenda" implies forward-looking speculation. • A Research Agenda is a type of “road map” for moving ahead. • However, drafting a Research Agenda starts with looking back at all the work you've done (previous publications, grants, seminar papers, etc.).
  • 17. Steps in Developing Research Agenda • First: locate your disciplinary position and interest. What specific sub-field of research are you operating within? What specific idea or issue do you want to explore? • Second: narrate your own approach and methods. What do you prioritize or value when conducting research? What methods do you use when gathering and analyzing data?   • 18. Steps in Developing Research Agenda • Third: summarize how current scholarship syncs up with your research interest and priorities. What have other researchers said about your interest and methodology? Are there recurring ideas that keep re-appearing throughout this research?   • 19. Steps in Developing Research Agenda • Fourth: explain how you plan to build upon the ideas, concepts, or key terms you identified in Step Three. Show how your research can evolve ideas and concepts What specific projects do you plan to undertake? How can these projects contribute to the trends you've identified? • Fifth: clarify the benefits of undertaking this research. What do you hope to accomplish?
