Static electricity occurs when two objects touch and negative charges move faster than positive charges from one object to another, building up an imbalance of charges. For example, when a balloon is rubbed with wool cloth, negative charges move from the wool to the balloon, leaving the balloon with a buildup of negative charge. The buildup of electrical charges on a body is called static electricity.
