    5 W’s + 1 H
3. Use the 5 W’s + 1 H to summarize news
    articles
Real World Applications

Every day you are asked to read books,
web pages, posters, magazines, and more. To
make sure you understand what you are reading,
you need stop occasionally to summarize and
ask yourself questions. This activity gives your
brain a chance sort through all the information
and decide what is most important to remember.

What Are They For?
• When you read articles in newspapers, on
  web pages, or in magazines answer the 5 W’s
  + 1 H to ensure you understand what you have
  read.
• When you summarize articles, if you answered
  the 5 W’s + 1 H you will guarantee a complete
  summarization.

You may not be able to get all the information in one
sentence every time, but try to keep it as short as
possible.

This answer can be found in the first sentence of
the first paragraph of the article.

b) A 14 year old boy is getting offers from
   universities

  Stephen is really good at basketball but that isn’t the
  focus of the article. The focus is, he is so good that
  colleges are already fighting over him at age 14. The
  title of the article is a good hint for this answer.

They don’t actually tell us when this article takes
place. However, since the article is written in
present tense and the date the article was
published is current, we can conclude it is
happening right now.

b) Las Vegas

Half way through the article the writer tells us that
Stephen will be attending a Las Vegas based
school. Therefore, it is safe to assume the article
takes place in Las Vegas.

a) He is really good at basketball

Stephen is really tall but that isn’t the reason all
the universities are interested in him. They are
interested because he is such a talented
basketball player.

a) It doesn’t tell us

The article doesn’t tell us exactly how the
universities are courting Stephen. It is possible
they are coming to his house and school, but we
just don’t know.

a) President Obama

The title of this article tells us right away it is
about President Obama. Clinton is mentioned
but he is not the focus of this piece.

b) He had his 50th birthday

The president did go out for a burger and fries
but that wasn’t the point of the article. The
point was he turned 50. The title should be a
good clue for this question.

a) August 4th, 2011

The first sentence of this piece tells you exactly
when it takes place, August 4th.

a) At the White House and around the country

The President did spend some time in
Washington D.C. , but he also bounced around to
a few other locations.

b) It was his birthday

The article does talk briefly about Obama being
the 5th youngest President in US history.
However, the bulk of the piece focuses on the
President’s birthday.

b) The day before his birthday he traveled all
   over the country. On his birthday he stayed at
   the White House. This weekend he celebrates
   in Maryland.

The President did stop for a burger and fries, but
he also flew all over the country celebrating.

President Obama celebrated his 50th birthday
with millions of people this year by flying all
over the country. This weekend he will have a
smaller party with his family.

In the second paragraph of the article the
author gives us Paul’s name. Even though Paul
dresses like a Stormtrooper, he is just a regular
guy.

   trooper

In the first paragraph it mentions a teenager
“’biked’ over water”. However, it then explains
Paul is walking 2,500 miles across the country.

The second paragraph of the article tells us Paul
started his walk on July 14th.

b) In Australia

In the first paragraph the writer tells us Paul is
an Australian. In the second paragraph we learn
he is walking from Perth to Sydney (both are in
Australia).

b) He is raising money for the Starlight Foundation

In the second to last paragraph of the article, the
writer reveals that Paul is walking to raise money
for the Starlight Foundation. In the past Paul has
completed a marathon but he is not working on
one now.

b) He is a member of a volunteer organization
   that dresses up as characters from epic
   movies

The last paragraph tells us that Paul is a member of
the 501st Legion, which encourages volunteer
work and wearing costumes from famous
movies.

On July 14th, Paul Jacob French began a charity
walk from Perth to Sydney, Australia. He will be
completing the entire distance dressed a
Stormtrooper per the requirement of the 501st
Legion volunteer organization.

To make sure you understand what you are reading, you need stop occasionally to summarize and ask yourself questions. This activity gives your brain a chance sort through all the information and decide what is most important to remember.

  • 36. Answer b) A 14 year old boy is getting offers from universities Stephen is really good at basketball but that isn’t the focus of the article. The focus is, he is so good that colleges are already fighting over him at age 14. The title of the article is a good hint for this answer.
  • 37. Answer a) Right now They don’t actually tell us when this article takes place. However, since the article is written in present tense and the date the article was published is current, we can conclude it is happening right now.
  • 38. Answer b) Las Vegas Half way through the article the writer tells us that Stephen will be attending a Las Vegas based school. Therefore, it is safe to assume the article takes place in Las Vegas.
  • 39. Answer a) He is really good at basketball Stephen is really tall but that isn’t the reason all the universities are interested in him. They are interested because he is such a talented basketball player.
  • 40. Answer a) It doesn’t tell us The article doesn’t tell us exactly how the universities are courting Stephen. It is possible they are coming to his house and school, but we just don’t know.
  • 41. Answer a) President Obama The title of this article tells us right away it is about President Obama. Clinton is mentioned but he is not the focus of this piece.
  • 42. Answer b) He had his 50th birthday The president did go out for a burger and fries but that wasn’t the point of the article. The point was he turned 50. The title should be a good clue for this question.
