St. David's Day commemorates St. David, the patron saint of Wales. During a battle between Welsh soldiers and invading Saxons, St. David had the Welsh wear leeks on their helmets so they could identify each other. This helped the Welsh win the battle. Now on March 1st, the date of St. David's death, the Welsh celebrate their culture and the leek serves as a national symbol of Wales. Daffodils are also used since their flowers resemble leeks and are easier to find in March.
