Completion of Utility
Markout
Client: CPB (formerly Leighton
Contractors)
Location: Highway 16, St Lukes
This year we completed the last of our
utility mark outs for CPB (formerly
Leighton Contractors) locating
underground services for them over an
approximately 2 year period on the State
Highway 16 Motorway Upgrade project.
From being present at their very first site
induction, to being one of the first crews
on the ground, to marking utilities for GPS
positioning over the entire site, and to
completing many night surveys and
finding ourselves in parts of the motorway
system we had never expected to be!
We would like to congratulate CPB on a great final project and are very proud to
have been part of this project and to have worked with their team. We wish
them all the best for their future projects.

GPS Asset Mapping
Client: Bartley Consultants
Location: East Coast Rd
Northcote, Auckland
Bartley Consultants, a reputed name in
the civil engineering and roading industry
required a GPR/EMI and GPS survey for
their client on East Coast Rd on the North
Shore. SSD was engaged to detect and
record to high accuracy, the position of
any underground utilities within the
carriageway and conflicting with the kerb-
line and canalling. We completed day and
night surveying of the total site and
conducted an in-house state-of-art high
precision GPS survey of all service
detected.
This equipped the client with an as-built CAD drawing and a mapbook of utility
services overlaid on a aerial map of the site.

Dominion Contractors, a well-known and
established construction company,
brought us in at Sylvia Park having
viewed the services we provided to one
of their contractors on site. After
discovering that the existing site utility
plans were inaccurate, Dominion engaged
SSD to complete a total EMI & GPR site
mark out. Our GIS Department saw the
opportunity to suggest a UAV / Drone
survey of the site. While our technicians
scanned the site for underground utilities,

centre, Mt Wellington, Auckland
our GIS consultant planned and conducted an aerial survey of the marked up
services, resulting in the plans below, and in the 3D model of the site which can be
viewed on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBsirkZ4BUY. It was a
great project to be part of and we wish all the best to Dominion for the
construction phase of this project!

Trainings &
Qualifications
Keeping up with the growing Health & Safety laws, is a priority for both our clients
and ourselves. All our technicians have cleared their NZ Transport Agency (NZTA)
Level 1 Basic Traffic Controller (TC) course and some have obtained higher
qualifications. We are also a member of the National Utility Locating Contractors
Association (NULCA) Inc, Australia.
We focus marking outs to the Australian Standard: AS 5488-2013 of Subsurface
Utility Information (SUI) applying quality levels A, B, C and D. SSD technicians
strive for quality Level B, which means they are trained and have knowledge of the
methods of utility locating to achieve results within these tolerances. As Level A
requires visual confirmation, we consult and help our clients by organising such a
service at this level, through our highly trusted industry partners.

Expanding our SSD
Family
Vish joined our expert team in June 2016. He has over 4 years experience in
avoiding underground utilities and has previously worked laying fibre optic utilities
and Visionstream. Vish has been a quick learner has an eye for detail, a great
understanding of the technical side of locating and has jelled well with other staff
members. Also a big congrats as Vish and his wife, as they had a baby boy just
after starting with SSD, so it’s been full on for them!
Damon is our latest addition, and arrived with his family from the main land. Based
in Christchurch during the earth quakes and was involved with Water Leak
Detection Surveying, Ground Penetrating Radar, EMI Pipe & Cable locating of
utilities, as well as Structural Concrete Scanning, so bringing with him much
experience and enthusiasm!

Matt has come over from the UK and been
with us since August. He is very
experienced in Water Leak Detection having
worked on both council and residual leaks
in the UK, and very enthusiastic to learn
new skills and a great team member. Any
singles that would like to go for a coffee…let
us know…we need to make sure he wants
to stay here!!!
