Sinthesis and Properties of Marble-Like Glass-Ceramics Using of Ash from Ther...Scientific Review SR
Color marble-like glass-ceramic materials were obtained through thermal treatment of glasses of the system CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 by using natural materials with the introduction of waste materials - ash from thermal power plants (TPP). The melting of the glass batch was in corundum crucibles at 1450oC with an isothermal hold of 60 min. The glasses obtained was fritted in distilled water and dried for 6 hours at 100oC, then completely crushed and divided into fractions with grain size of 0.8 mm, 1.0 mm, 2 mm, 2.5 mm and over 2.5 mm. It was found that the use of ash from TPP lead to higher values of degree of transformation (crystallization) than using base composition. Values of Avramy parameter’s in the range n=1,0 ÷ 1,6 are showed that crystallization of the glass frit is largely heterogeneous and crystal growing starts from the surface. The introduction of ash from TPP to native glasses carry out to significant reduction of energy of crystallization by Ес=289 kJ/mol to Ec=221 kJ/mol. The glass-ceramic materials were obtained through a one stage crystallization - 1050÷1070оС and an isothermal hold of 60 min., colored white, yellow brown to dark brown. The main crystalline phase in glass-ceramics is β-vollastonite with needle habit, size of crystals - ĺ = 40 ÷ 120 μm and d <5 μm in quantities 37 ÷ 42%. As secondary phases depending on the amount of ash have been identified - the anorthite, gehlenite and α-quartz with prismatic habit were appeared. The obtained glass-ceramic materials have a marble-like effect and technical parameters compared with natural granite and marble and have higher values of density, micro hardness, speed grinding, bending strength and chemical resistance. Monoclinic and orthorhombic iron(II) molybdate micro-sized particles were selectively prepared based on pH, temperature, and reaction time. The catalyst has unique 3D architectures and can be used to decompose dyes and other organic contaminants photocatalytically. Parameters like pH, concentration, temperature, and time were optimized to produce the catalyst and for its application in degrading methylene blue dye. The catalyst showed potential for scale-up and other industrial applications.

They exhibit remarkable properties such as high hardness, high wear resistance, high corrosion resistance, high elastic modulus, high melting point and the ability to retain high strength at elevated temperatures. Alumina (Al2O3) is one such remarkable ceramic material known for its unique optical, mechanical and electrical properties. But the brittle nature of Al2O3 limits its use in certain engineering applications. Simon Fraser University researchers developed novel polymer membranes for fuel cells. They synthesized fluoropolymer-block-ionic and fluorous-ionic graft copolymers with different architectures. The membrane morphology, including ionic channel size and continuity, depended on polymer structure and affected properties like water uptake and proton conductivity. Fully sulfonated membranes showed continuous increases in proton conductivity with ion exchange capacity, while partially sulfonated membranes peaked at moderate capacities due to conductivity drops at high capacities. The graft structure allowed high capacities without dissolution, promising for low-humidity proton conductivity needed in fuel cells.

This document discusses the effect of heating rate on the structural and optical properties of silicon and magnesium co-doped zirconia nanopowders prepared by a sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that different heating rates between 1-10°C/min affected the formation of tetragonal and cubic phases, crystallinity, and particle size. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy showed that the band gap energy of the doped zirconia crystals decreased depending on the heating rate, with a minimum band gap of around 3-3.2 eV.

Geochemical logging provides quantitative estimates of formation mineralogy through measurements of elemental abundances. This allows for improved evaluation of complex reservoirs containing multiple minerals. Case studies demonstrated how geochemical logs aided in characterizing carbonate, sandstone, and shale gas formations through mineral identification, matrix density calculation, and porosity/saturation determinations. Core-log integration can be challenging due to differences in sampling volumes, but geochemical logs provide valuable mineralogical context for formation evaluation.

ORGANIC COATINGS FOR CORROSION PROTECTION OF TRANSFORMERS IN UNDERGROUND CHAM...
Underground electrical transformers are frequently submitted to a very aggressive environment because of the stagnated water of underground chambers which is heated and contaminated. In Brazil, carbon steel structures of underground transformers are usually protected with coal tar epoxy paints in order to ensure their reliability. However, the use of this type of paints is being strongly restricted because coal tar contains complex mixtures of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which contain many toxic and potentially carcinogenic substances. Aiming at replacing coal tar based paints by an environmentally friendly one; several paints were selected in the local market and submitted to performance tests in order to compare them with coal tar based paint. In addition, anodes were evaluated to study the application of galvanic cathodic protection in areas of metal exposure due to coating flaws. This paper presents and discusses the obtained results.
Os transformadores elétricos subterrâneos estão frequentemente expostos à corrosão intensa decorrente da estagnação de água aquecida e contaminada das câmaras subterrâneas. No Brasil, as estruturas de aço-carbono do transformador subterrâneo são usualmente protegidas com pintura de epóxi alcatrão de hulha que contém substâncias tóxicas e potencialmente cancerígenas. Com o objetivo de substituir as tintas à base de alcatrão de hulha por tintas ecologicamente corretas, tintas disponíveis no mercado nacional foram selecionadas e submetidas a ensaios de desempenho para a sua comparação com a tinta de alcatrão de hulha. Além disso, anodos foram avaliados para o estudo da aplicação de proteção catódica galvânica do metal exposto em áreas de falhas do revestimento. Este artigo apresenta e discute os resultados obtidos.

Thermogravimetric analysis showed weight loss up to 600°C attributed to removal of absorbed water and hydroxyl groups. Heating also increased asymmetric stretching splitting, indicating greater long-range Coulombic forces from increased siloxane bonding between particles. The study concludes initial sintering is driven by dehydration and surface hydroxyl condensation forming siloxane bonds between particles.
Thermochemical materials for thermochemical heat storage systems
This document summarizes research on thermochemical materials for heat storage. It compares different heat storage systems and discusses the principle and selection of thermochemical heat storage (THSS) materials. The characteristics of SrBr2 and MgSO4 hydrates are described based on thermal analysis. Composites of these materials with activated carbon and expanded natural graphite were manufactured and tested through multiple cycles. Tungsten-cermet fuels show promise for long-life, high-performance nuclear thermal rockets by containing uranium and fission products better than previous fuel types. Further development and testing of tungsten-cermet fuels is needed to validate their performance in nuclear thermal rocket reactors for applications like Mars missions. Controls and sensors would be required to monitor critical parameters like neutron flux, temperature, strain, and propellant flow for safe reactor operation.

When the word “Ceramic” comes to our mind, we usually associate them with plates, saucers, cups and mugs. But, the word “Ceramic” encompasses more than just the word “plates” or “saucers”. Indeed, ceramic materials are hard and inherently brittle, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. They have multifarious properties and have acquired a status of high technical importance in the field of scientific research. Ceramics are the soul of the modern day’s structural applications owing to their high mechanical and thermal stability under different challenging conditions. They exhibit remarkable properties such as high hardness, high wear resistance, high corrosion resistance, high elastic modulus, high melting point and the ability to retain high strength at elevated temperatures. Alumina (Al2O3) is one such remarkable ceramic material known for its unique optical, mechanical and electrical properties. But the brittle nature of Al2O3 limits its use in certain engineering applications. Therefore, the strength of Al2O3 and Al2O3- based ceramics can be enhanced by tailoring the microstructural design through the application of strategic techniques that may involve secondary phase particle inclusion (such as Zirconia, ZrO2)

To find a new path to get o-xylene, catalysts surface was studied and a new mesoporous borate zirconia catalyst was prepared. Mesoporous Borate Zirconia had showed a very efficient path to manufature o-xylene.

Simon Fraser University researchers developed novel polymer membranes for fuel cells. They synthesized fluoropolymer-block-ionic and fluorous-ionic graft copolymers with different architectures. The membrane morphology, including ionic channel size and continuity, depended on polymer structure and affected properties like water uptake and proton conductivity. Fully sulfonated membranes showed continuous increases in proton conductivity with ion exchange capacity, while partially sulfonated membranes peaked at moderate capacities due to conductivity drops at high capacities. The graft structure allowed high capacities without dissolution, promising for low-humidity proton conductivity needed in fuel cells.

This document discusses the effect of heating rate on the structural and optical properties of silicon and magnesium co-doped zirconia nanopowders prepared by a sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that different heating rates between 1-10°C/min affected the formation of tetragonal and cubic phases, crystallinity, and particle size. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy showed that the band gap energy of the doped zirconia crystals decreased depending on the heating rate, with a minimum band gap of around 3-3.2 eV.

Geochemical logging provides quantitative estimates of formation mineralogy through measurements of elemental abundances. This allows for improved evaluation of complex reservoirs containing multiple minerals. Case studies demonstrated how geochemical logs aided in characterizing carbonate, sandstone, and shale gas formations through mineral identification, matrix density calculation, and porosity/saturation determinations. Core-log integration can be challenging due to differences in sampling volumes, but geochemical logs provide valuable mineralogical context for formation evaluation.

Underground electrical transformers are frequently submitted to a very aggressive environment because of the stagnated water of underground chambers which is heated and contaminated. In Brazil, carbon steel structures of underground transformers are usually protected with coal tar epoxy paints in order to ensure their reliability. However, the use of this type of paints is being strongly restricted because coal tar contains complex mixtures of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which contain many toxic and potentially carcinogenic substances. Aiming at replacing coal tar based paints by an environmentally friendly one; several paints were selected in the local market and submitted to performance tests in order to compare them with coal tar based paint. In addition, anodes were evaluated to study the application of galvanic cathodic protection in areas of metal exposure due to coating flaws. This paper presents and discusses the obtained results.

No Brasil, as estruturas de aço-carbono do transformador subterrâneo são usualmente protegidas com pintura de epóxi alcatrão de hulha que contém substâncias tóxicas e potencialmente cancerígenas. Com o objetivo de substituir as tintas à base de alcatrão de hulha por tintas ecologicamente corretas, tintas disponíveis no mercado nacional foram selecionadas e submetidas a ensaios de desempenho para a sua comparação com a tinta de alcatrão de hulha. Além disso, anodos foram avaliados para o estudo da aplicação de proteção catódica galvânica do metal exposto em áreas de falhas do revestimento. Este artigo apresenta e discute os resultados obtidos.

Thermogravimetric analysis showed weight loss up to 600°C attributed to removal of absorbed water and hydroxyl groups. Diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy revealed bonding changes - bridged hydroxyl groups were replaced by free hydroxyl and water molecules with heating. Heating also increased asymmetric stretching splitting, indicating greater long-range Coulombic forces from increased siloxane bonding between particles. The study concludes initial sintering is driven by dehydration and surface hydroxyl condensation forming siloxane bonds between particles.
Thermochemical materials for thermochemical heat storage systems
This document summarizes research on thermochemical materials for heat storage. It compares different heat storage systems and discusses the principle and selection of thermochemical heat storage (THSS) materials. The characteristics of SrBr2 and MgSO4 hydrates are described based on thermal analysis. Composites of these materials with activated carbon and expanded natural graphite were manufactured and tested through multiple cycles. The composites showed stable performance over cycles but challenges remain around material stability and geometry changes during cycling. Further development and testing of tungsten-cermet fuels is needed to validate their performance in nuclear thermal rocket reactors for applications like Mars missions. Controls and sensors would be required to monitor critical parameters like neutron flux, temperature, strain, and propellant flow for safe reactor operation.

When I was asked to give a companion lecture in support of ‘The Philosophy of Science’ (https://shorturl.at/4pUXz) I decided not to walk through the detail of the many methodologies in order of use. Instead, I chose to employ a long standing, and ongoing, scientific development as an exemplar. And so, I chose the ever evolving story of Thermodynamics as a scientific investigation at its best.
Conducted over a period of >200 years, Thermodynamics R&D, and application, benefitted from the highest levels of professionalism, collaboration, and technical thoroughness. New layers of application, methodology, and practice were made possible by the progressive advance of technology. In turn, this has seen measurement and modelling accuracy continually improved at a micro and macro level.
Perhaps most importantly, Thermodynamics rapidly became a primary tool in the advance of applied science/engineering/technology, spanning micro-tech, to aerospace and cosmology. I can think of no better a story to illustrate the breadth of scientific methodologies and applications at their best.
EWOCS-I: The catalog of X-ray sources in Westerlund 1 from the Extended Weste...
Context. With a mass exceeding several 104 M⊙ and a rich and dense population of massive stars, supermassive young star clusters
represent the most massive star-forming environment that is dominated by the feedback from massive stars and gravitational interactions
among stars.
Aims. In this paper we present the Extended Westerlund 1 and 2 Open Clusters Survey (EWOCS) project, which aims to investigate
the influence of the starburst environment on the formation of stars and planets, and on the evolution of both low and high mass stars.
The primary targets of this project are Westerlund 1 and 2, the closest supermassive star clusters to the Sun.
Methods. The project is based primarily on recent observations conducted with the Chandra and JWST observatories. Specifically,
the Chandra survey of Westerlund 1 consists of 36 new ACIS-I observations, nearly co-pointed, for a total exposure time of 1 Msec.
Additionally, we included 8 archival Chandra/ACIS-S observations. This paper presents the resulting catalog of X-ray sources within
and around Westerlund 1. Sources were detected by combining various existing methods, and photon extraction and source validation
were carried out using the ACIS-Extract software.
Results. The EWOCS X-ray catalog comprises 5963 validated sources out of the 9420 initially provided to ACIS-Extract, reaching a
photon flux threshold of approximately 2 × 10−8 photons cm−2
s
−1
. The X-ray sources exhibit a highly concentrated spatial distribution,
with 1075 sources located within the central 1 arcmin. We have successfully detected X-ray emissions from 126 out of the 166 known
massive stars of the cluster, and we have collected over 71 000 photons from the magnetar CXO J164710.20-455217.
