Egyptian civilization arose along the Nile River around 3000 BC and lasted until 1780 BC. It was referred to as the "gift of the Nile" because the annual flooding of the Nile deposited rich soil that allowed for agricultural surpluses. The pharaohs, or kings, ruled with absolute authority and oversaw the building of pyramids and the practice of mummifying royal bodies. Egyptians developed hieroglyphic writing to accurately record events and used it to inscribe monuments.
