Ancient Egypt was a civilization in North Africa along the Nile River that began around 3150 BC with the political unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under the first pharaoh. It developed over the next three millennia until 332 BC when Alexander the Great conquered Egypt with little resistance from the Persians, establishing a Greek/Macedonian government based on an Egyptian model and centered in the new capital of Alexandria.
