“Diversity and inclusion is huge. It obviously starts by having a workforce
that is diverse but inclusion is a cultural piece that we all have to work on
everyday,”
“It shows up in every meeting, starting with me.”
“Am I able to actually conduct a meeting where everyone is able to
contribute their best because we all come with different styles, we have
different cultural upbringings, what makes us tick is different. So you got
to have leaders who are in-tuned with that.”
Satya Nadella, CEO, Microsoft
Diversity & being inclusive isn’t
just the right thing to do. It is the
way we all should be running
our businesses across all
industries globally
What is Diversity all about?
Diversity is about meeting the needs of our
changing customers in a changing world
Diversity is the range of human differences,
including but not limited to race, ethnicity,
gender, gender identity, sexual orientation,
age, social class, physical ability or
attributes, religious or ethical values system,
national origin, and political beliefs.
What is Inclusion all about?
Inclusion is involvement and
empowerment, where the inherent
worth and dignity of all people are
recognized. An inclusive business
promotes and sustains a sense of
belonging; it values and practices respect
for the talents, beliefs, backgrounds, and
ways of living of its members.

Leader vs. Management
Leader: strategist, more money, dealing with people (board of directors,
c-levels, your team, people who work with you)
Manager: ensure that the team is running smoothly, project objectives
get met, listen – deep, deep listening
You can “lead” in every job you have or do. You can be a leader without
being a manager. Look at your strengths
Most leadership positions require you to manage people, if you want to
move up, you need to put yourself in a place to learn how to manage
Leader vs Manager
Identification

where fear is the predominant energy.
AHW: A healthy workplace is one
where trust is the predominant energy.

Editor's Notes

  • #18 Who is in the room? Teams – invited, shared goal, on the same team or project or shared deliverable What’s happening now and on the same page. Yammer – people Reaching beyond the people you don’t know. You may not share a time zone Connectivity, reach, discovery Puts what a network knows to work for you Teams is optimal for focused activity between small and medium groups. 999 people limit. Big groups are Yammer’s sweet spot. Communities of practice or interest. They don’t check in every day. Teams is your high velocity inner loop, direct connections. Yammer is your outer loop broad perspective, extended reach and consultations Work done in Teams, knowledge come from Yammer
  • #26 Work-life harmony – not balance. I don’t mean to say yes to everything in that it doesn’t serve you but yes in the sense that you don’t have to know everything to be successful.
  • #29 Amy G. Dala or the am-ig-da-la – the wee part of your brain responsible for fear, anger and negativity Resistance is an active, intelligent, protean, malign, force — tireless, relentless and inextinguishable — whose sole object is to stop us from becoming our best selves and from achieving our higher goals.” This resistance is the reaction of your mind every time you want to create something new or do something different. A reaction that has the same strength than you desire, but goes in the opposite direction. You can never completely eliminate resistance, but you can learn to live with it and be stronger than it.
  • #30 Keep it very simple and differentiate yourself quickly. You have about 30 seconds or less to really simplify your message but also explain clearly what is in it for the audience, you to explain ‘the why’ part of plans.” “Also it’s important to show personality and smile — smiling is really an inexpensive asset, people are drawn to enthusiasm and confidence. It’s about saying things like ‘I know this is going to be a great solution’ rather than ‘I think this is going to be good solution’.”
  • #31 The thing is, that hesitancy is often what does open the door for criticism or critique. With any presentation, even to one’s team, there are some simple things you can do to present with certainty: 1. Like Sara, I agree that a smile goes such a long way. 2. Start with a thank you. 3. Practice — write down your talking points in a notebook and have it there to also jot down any important phrases you hear from others, especially your boss. 4. Brevity, I am working on this, listen more than you speak. 5. If you are presenting, have someone else take notes so you can be present and think on your feet. 6. Breathe and slow down. You don’t have to answer immediately, smile, take a breath, repeat the question back as the beginning of your answer. In coaching others and continuously working on my pitches, presentations I work on getting this language out of the vernacular. Give a listen to see how much doubt language swirls around in our world. It’s there more than you think. In this case, there is no “benefit” to presenting “doubt.”
