Anatomy of an Intranet (Triangle SharePoint User Group) January 2016Michael Greene
Presented at the Triangle SharePoint User Group (TRISPUG.com) on January 5, 2016.
While many people see the intranet as a pretty (hopefully) homepage, in reality the modern enterprise intranet is a complex animal of many moving parts. Structuring of the information within the intranet, how that information is presented to the user, how the user interacts with it, how the organization manages it, and the physical branding that sits on top of all of it are all critical conversations to have if an intranet is going to be effective. In this session we’ll explore the building blocks of a successful intranet and discuss common intranet pitfalls to avoid on your next intranet roll-out.

Our SharePoint environment is a lot like many others – a SharePoint 2007 implementation that was used more as a file dump than a collaboration space. With minimal user adoption, we were never quite ready to implement 2010, with a pilot SharePoint 2010 implementation stalled out of the gate.
In the meantime, some content was put on Box and other services to address external collaboration needs. Business users needed more relevant search results, content databases had grown uncomfortably large, and access controls had become spaghetti. Fortunately, site sprawl wasn’t too bad… except that the reason for that was the low adoption.
SharePoint 2013 arrived to a perfect storm – business and technology needs to be addressed, content that needs to be brought back in-house, and user adoption that needs to be improved. Time to upgrade!
See how we approached the upgrade, the issues than needed to be addressed, and the questions that needed to be answered.

We all build different project sites during the years, and also used the content by query web part to lift up the different projects we was part of, but how can we achieve the same in Modern SharePoint.
In this session we will:
Use Hub sites as the home of our Projects,
Create a Project template with Site Design and Site Scripts,
Enable a flow to add some more magic.
Look at different web parts both from Microsoft and from the community to help us lift up our Project Sites.
Ensure it is is all security trimmed so that we don’t see more then we have access to see.
Really Cool!
And we will also make sure that our Projects are teamified so that we also can access them from Microsoft Teams, and with prepopulated content, so our Project Managers can start to work immediately So lets build the new Project Hub together.

Does this mean we can use Hub Sites as our Intranet or is it still some building blocks missing?

Performance problems in SharePoint are most commonly caused by a poorly configured or ineffectively optimised SQL Server back end. In this fast-paced session, Chief Technical Architect and International speaker Knut Relbe-Moe will walk through his top 10 tips for ensuring your SQL back end is perfectly pert and performing well for SharePoint. Compiled from his experiences in designing, deploying and managing truly cloud-scale instances of SharePoint and SQL Server, this session is one not to miss if you want to squeeze the best out of your SharePoint power-plant.

We all know mobility is changing the world. It has dramatically changed our personal lives and expectations around mobility in our personal life are moving into our work life.
Our concept of the physical work environment has changed from the static office and desk. There is an “anywhere, anytime” expectation, and also an expectation for more dynamic environments to take advantage of mobile capabilities at work.
Smartphones and tablets have become the new norms of computing. More than 60% of people now have 3 or more devices. Applications, including productivity tools, need to work well on these mobile devices and in the contexts in which these devices are used. This includes sales people on-site with a customer or a plant manager walking the factory floor.
To support this new modern workplace, we understand that companies want to enable end-to-end productivity and collaboration.
The real risk is not recognizing that your end users are already putting corporate data in the cloud. Use the puppy analogy. Its all about redirect, but in a more secure, controlled way.
You can try it, and if you don’t like it, revert back
Some content in file shares, multiple versions of SharePoint – pretty typical right?
4 application servers for content – you typically have twice as many for search.
1 less content server – but not huge savings yet.
No local search index anymore. Deployed new update to SharePoint 2013. 60% to 70% savings.
