Critical Animal Studies, Thinking About Animals
In the spring of 2011, students, professors, and community members met at Brock University in St.
Catharines, Ontario for the 10th Annual North American Conference for Critical Animal Studies
(CAS). The conference, Thinking About Animals, was co hosted between the Institute for Critical
Animal Studies (ICAS) and Brock s Department of Sociology. Conference participants covered a wide
array of topics through panels and presentations that discussed the links between human and animal
oppression/liberation, gender and meat consumption, postcolonial studies, animal liberation theory,
abolitionist history, social attitudes and prejudice, veganism, and activist repression. There were also
those which focused entirely on vivisection, farmed animals, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Within this conference space and CAS as a whole, I had finally found a home for my interests in the
decolonial politics of transnational and postcolonial feminism, politics of race and culture, and
narratives about animals agency and resistance. My presentation, A Transnational Feminist Critique of
the U.S. Slaughterhouse System, discussed how both the animals killed in slaughterhouses and the
undocumented workers employed there are exploited by animal agribusiness and relegated to the
margins of society. Inspired by Sara Ahmed s concept of the stranger, a paradoxical figure who is
perceived as strange due to their race and otherness, I argued that human and nonhuman others are
perceived as unlawful intruders due to both racism and speciesism. Thus, they are expelled from the
white, human, and civilized community to maintain social hierarchies and private property. The
presentation included a slide of a cow escaping from a slaughterhouse into an urban neighborhood.
Showing the complexity of human animal encounters, the cow, who was later named Molly, was both
removed as an unlawful intruder from the community into which she fled, but also invoked public
affection (a ballad honoring her can be found on youtube). A decolonial method of studying animal
resistance attempts to read documents from the perspective of nonhuman animals such as Molly and
recognizes the centrality of capitalist globalization and white human supremacy in oppressive social

Jackie Robinson Hero
The world of baseball is a different place because of one brave man who fought for equality. Jack
Roosevelt Robinson is known as a hero to many people because of his bravery and courage to fight for
what s right. Because of his courage to fight for equal rights, the challenges he faced, and his legacy
and lasting impact on the world of baseball, Jackie Robinson is a very heroic figure.
Equal rights for baseball was a fight that Jackie fought. Accepting Rickey s offer to play with the
Royals at first, then the Dodgers, he was accepting the challenge to fight for equal rights. Branch
Rickey, the owner of the Brooklyn, Dodgers, saw Jackie s baseball talent and asked to meet him in
Brooklyn. Rickey wanted him to play for his team and said it ... Show more content on

Many awards were given to him for his accomplishments. For example, he was the first to be awarded
rookie of the year for all of baseball, not just the National League. Therefore, the rookie of the year
award was named after Jackie in 1987. (Maddux Zito 482) This evidence suggests that what he did to
the world of baseball made a big enough impact to have an award named after him. Next, many
people were inspired by Jackie. His popularity grew with everyone. About half of the Major League
players were black by the 1970 s. Also, songs were written because of him, a comic book was made,
and a movie was created called Jackie Robinson. (Graf 3) This logically implies that Jackie became a
heroic figure and inspired everyone. Last of all, Robinson impacted so many people that he has his
own day celebrated by many. 42 is the number he wore. Today it has been retired so nobody else in the
Major Leagues can wear it except on Jackie Robinson Day. The man who helped change the course of
the game and more importunity, our country. was what Jackie was known as. (Graf 3,4) This example
demonstrates how he made a major impact on everyone off and on the baseball field. Because of
Robinson s courage, he has a lasting impact to this

Spongebob And My Family
In February of 2002 I was three, and my family and I had just settled into our new house in West
Hempstead. I can still remember the smell of the newly painted walls, the freshly polished floor, and
the twinkle of the TV. Are you ready kids Aye Aye Captain I can t hear you AYE AYE CAPTAIN! This
is the sound that filled me with joy. I plopped down in front of the TV, and on the screen appeared a
porous, yellow sponge with square pants. Blue eyed, with three eyelashes on each eye, two prominent
front teeth, three freckles on each cheek; he wore a shirt with a red tie, brown trousers held up by a
black belt and black shoes.

Abu Bakr s The Sunni Tale
The Sunni tale focuses on the allegedly democratic selection that led to Abu Bakr s rise, touting him as
the leader on whom the people agreed. Some academics speculate, based on existing accounts, that
this election was conducted amongst a small group of tribal leaders who actively prevented Ali s
participation by involving him with the task of caring for a dying Muhammad. Some even task Abu
Bakr and Omar s children (including Aisha) with distracting Ali to the point of intentional obstruction.
This remains the primary disagreement between Sunni and Shi a Islam.
Tribalism is really important to remember here and goes back to our point about Islamic solidarity still
being a new concept. The Arabian Peninsula had been filled with smaller

Each year, thousands of individuals are subjected to human trafficking and human exploitation either
in their countries or abroad regardless of their age, gender, race and socio economic background.
Human trafficking and human exploitation are a form of modern day slavery and a crime involved
controlling an individual against their will through violence, fraud, and coercion for the satisfaction of
personal desires or profitable advantage. Human trafficking and human exploitation are often inter
related to each other. Traffickers use violence, threats, blackmails, false promises, deceptions,
manipulations, and debt bondage to trap potential individuals.

Monologue About Raptors
Have I already told you about my past? A long time ago, i was a dreaded species by ALL ! But not
only my species was dreaded by all, but further... I was... RAPTOR PHTEVEN ! My name was
enough to fear all other raptors. But let me relate it from the beginning. I was, as I was saying, a
raptor. At that time, all the raptors were happy and peacefull : the biggest raptors were eating up the
smallest raptors, and the smallest raptors, sneaky as they were, working together to trap biggest
raptors. Therefore: reptilian routine. But with me, Raptor Phteven, the small raptors weren t trying to
trap me, oh no they weren t ! Because I was too badass for them. And the more astonishing being that
unlike the other raptors, I wasn t eating the small raptors. I was stealing the eggs from the ... Show

Indications and Surgical Considerations for Implant Placement in Maxillary Incisive Canal a Case
Series
Rhebi, Nadia; Ochoa Durand, Daniel; Suzuki, Takanori; Cho, Sang Choon; Froum, Stuart
Introduction
Implant surgery in the edentulous premaxilla is often challenging because of esthetic, phonetic and
biomechanical considerations. In the maxilla, resorption following tooth extraction occurs mainly
within the first 3 12 months post operatively (1). Bone resorption following tooth loss occurs in both a
lingual and apical direction, resulting in an edentulous maxilla that is narrower with a loss of vertical
height. This resorption is responsible for the edge to edge or reverses occlusal relation of the residual
crests that is often observed in patients with completely edentulous maxillae (2).
At times, ridge resorption in the maxilla is so severe that is necessary to augment the bone in order to
place an implant. In some cases, conventional ridge augmentation cannot build enough bone to place
implants, especially in fully edentulous cases. A number of bone augmentation methods have been
developed specifically for implant placement in the severely resorbed maxilla. These include split
ridge augmentation (3), distraction osteogenesis (4), ridge augmentation using guided bone
regeneration with various kinds of graft materials, and sinus augmentation (5). Most of these
procedures are not only technique sensitive and

Mathilde In The Necklace By Guy De Maupassant
In The Necklace by Guy De Maupassant, Mathilde s character is a terrible person. She didn t care
about anyone but herself, and she deserved the life she ended up with. First, Mathilde only cares about
money and her appearance, here she would be classified as a gold digger. Mathilde was talking to her
husband about going to a ball and she said, There is nothing as humiliating as looking poor in the
middle of a lot of rich women (Maupassant 1). Mathilde wanted money for a new dress or she would
not go to the ball her husband got a very hard to get invitation to. Even though her husband was saving
his money, he offered to give it to his wife and she took it without question. She took more than she
needed and even though he was at a loss, her husband was happy that she was happy. ... Show more

All she wanted was to have people think she was someone she wasn t just to be liked for one night.
Second, Mathilde s spoiled by her husband. He gives her what she wants when she wants it. As her
husband went out, she remained in her evening clothes, lacking strength to get into bed, huddled on a
chair, without volition or power of thought (Maupassant 4). Mathilde s husband pays to fund her need
of a new dress and pays the help replace the necklace that he didn t even lose. He worked to get the
invitation to the party so that he could make her happy...but she still wasn t happy. Basically, Mathilde
s husband worked hard his whole life to make her happy, but what he does isn t enough for
her...making herself look like a spoiled brat. Lastly, Mathilde only cares about herself. She only tries
to make herself happy and she seeks for attention on her. Mathilde doesn t take any blame for the
mistake she made. I ve had some hard times since I last saw you, many sorrows...and all on your

The Malabar ( East Syrian ) Tradition
The Syro Malabar church is a Catholic Church in full communion with the Pope. It is part of the
Chaldean (East Syrian) tradition. It was founded by St. Thomas the Apostle around 52 A.D. and the
members were first known as the St. Thomas Christians, but when they spread to India, primarily
Kerala, they became known as the Syro Malabar Catholics. The Syro Malabar Church uses a slightly
different cross than the Roman Catholic Church, and has slight variations in the liturgical calendar.
There are currently five Syro Malabar archdioceses and twenty nine dioceses worldwide.

It serves as a short act of courtesy between the Messiah, the celebrant, and the worshippers (Palackal).
Next is the Nativity Hymn, used as a replacement for the trinity. Unlike in the Latin Rite, the Holy
Qurbana does not start off with the trinity, but instead starts with Glory to God in the highest, to which
the proper response is Amen. After the Nativity Hymn comes the Lord s Prayer, which varies
depending on the form. It could either be the ordinary form or the solemn form. Then, the Thrice Holy
is said with the words Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of hosts! The Thrice Holy is a way to remind the

The Unicorn And The Wasp Analysis
The murder mystery is a genre of literature that has been tackled by many authors over its long
history. Agatha Christie is not just any author though, as her work in renovating the detective genre,
has seemingly perfected the art of solving a murder. Perhaps this is why her books have been sold
more than any other novelist, only being beaten out by the works of Shakespeare, and the bible.
Crooked House is one of those many, many books she has authored. In it, she took the opportunity to
poke fun at, and break the rules of, the very formula of the detective, that she helped make popular.
One might say that Crooked House parodies the detective novel, and it is in that spirit, that the Doctor
Who episode adapts the novel. The Unicorn and the Wasp is definitely a parody of the murder mystery
form. Agatha Christie novels in particular are the focus of its many silly allusions, so it is not surprise
that an analogy to Crooked House is formed. Not content with merely parodying her style, Doctor
Who adds a splash of its style, with the typical alien occult element, that the shows is famous for. With
its mash of elements of the form, and its usual flair of weird, The Unicorn and the Wasp , sees itself
paying respect to a literary genius. Parody, in Leitch s terms, is an adaptation, that instead of copying a
text/style, it seeks to satirize it, via subtle ways of poking at the sources elements (Leitch, pgs. 116
188). This is the case for Crooked House, which aims point out some

The Anzacs And The Development Of Nationalism In Australia...
The ANZACs were a significant influence in the development of nationalism in Australia during
World War One (WWI). Throughout WWI, Australian formed the fundamentals of the now universally
recognised Australian identity. The ANZACs played a crucial role in the establishment of a mixture of
both cultural and triumphal nationalism as Australia s exposure to other cultures during WWI saw
them no longer recognised as an extension of Britain but an independent group of competent men and
women that could equal their Commonwealth forefathers in the war effort. Thus, forming a distinct
identity and sense of nationalism that s significance, decades after WWI, remained strongly associated
with the WWI ANZACs.
Nationalism is seen to have two origins. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The poem On the landing of Our Troops at Gallipoli by Joan Torrace, composed after the end WWI,
demonstrated a sense of nationalism when reflecting upon Australia equalling its forefather in the war
effort: Australia! ... all nations hail thee now . The poem depicts the British and Australia flags both of
equal size and focus. The poem states: hoist the ... union Jack ... and let the Southern Flag wave gaily
side by side. This poem show the authors connection between the events of WWI and seeing Australia
as an equivalent individual to Britain supporting the impact on WWI on Australia s nationalism. A
photograph depicts the Queen among her family commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Gallipoli
landing in the ANZAC parade demonstrating the British leaders respect for Australia fuelled by the
devotion of ANZACs in WWI. Finally, nationalism is still minutely evident in modern society on
cultural outlets. The popular song, We Didn t Start The Fire by Billy Joel devotes a sizeable proportion
of lyrics to American achievements, successful sportsmen, political leaders and references to mores
negative events of other countries. For example the song mentions America s first women in space:
sally ride, the American discovery of the polio vaccine and the violent and devastating separation of
north and South Korea.

Descriptive Essay On A Day In The Morning
The light of the new morning sun shines through the gaps of my ivory lace curtains. I can see the
almost too tiny to see specks of dust floating gracefully in the streams of light, it s almost like the dust
never moves, never settles. A quartet of petite sparrow s perch outside my window singing a
welcoming song. As I sat up in bed a waft of freshly ground coffee entices my senses. I open the
curtains, look out at the frost bitten grass, the glassy lake across the way and the white gradient fog
that has engulfed the tops of the pine trees. Slipping my feet into a pair of wool lined slippers, I grab
my robe and welcome my husband, Caleb, for breakfast. We scarf down our eggs and homemade
spiced apple oatmeal so we can get a head start on our day. The warmth of the heater keeps me
distracted, the warmth first thing in the morning is like settling into a tub of hot water after a day in
the cold; it is hard to resist. Eventually I throw on my clothes and accessorize myself with what seems
like a never ending list of winter must haves; a long olive green winter coat, a tan plaid scarf, a pair of
wool socks that line my brown leather boots, a pair of gloves, and to top it off, a olive knitted beanie.
My husband and I haul our luggage out to car that is crusted with ice. While he loads our luggage, I
begin to scrape the thick sheet of ice off our windshield. I m too much of a pansy and have to stop
every 20 seconds to frantically shake my hands in order to regenerate some heat

A Research Study On Stem Cell
My research about stem cells, I will be talking about what a stem cell is. Why are stem cells important
from a medical perspective? How are stem cells being used today? Where do scientists get stem cells?
Why is so much controversy over the stem cells? How does a zygote develop into a baby? Why a
zygote is considered a stem cell? A stem cell is an immature cell that can help reproduce different
types of cells throughout the body. There are three types of stem cells that I will be focusing on : adult,
embryonic, and totipotent stem cells. Adult stem cells can be found in children and infants. These stem
cells are found in small numbers in most adult tissues, such as bone marrow or fat.Adult stem cells are
used to repair tissue throughout the body, therefore the adult cells are used to replace dying or lost
cells in the body.Totipotent stem cells are the one and only type of stem cell that can be used anywhere
throughout the whole body. They are formed when a sperm cell and a cell egg unite to make a one
celled fertlized egg.The research on all the cells is limited because of the challenge receiving them in
laboratory. Embryonic stem cells are produced when newly fertilized eggs begin to divide. Unlike
adult stem cells, these cells can go anywhere throughout the body. So what type of people actually
need stem cells for their health? People with cancer like leukemia and lymphoma can get stem cells as
well as people with blood disorders and solid tumors can also get the help

Loss Of Innocence In Marigolds By Eugenia Collier
Maturity and Innocence
Maturity does not necessarily come with age. It comes with consideration, manners, and one s
reactions. Although completely opposite, maturity and innocence go hand in hand. In the short story,

Friendship And Loyalty In Code Name, By Elizabeth Wein
Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: What! You too? I thought I was
the only one. ― C.S. Lewis. This quote perfectly illustrates the friendship between Maddie and Julie.

Dympna, Maddie, and Julie s relationship with each other to develop their individual lives using
characterization, conflict, and setting.
Maddie s friendship with Dympna is what allowed Maddie to be around planes and learn how to fly.
Maddie is the one who found Dympna after she crash landed in a field. Dympna was kind yet firm,

Matter can take on different changes physically and chemically, for an example of a physical change is
when water freezes into ice, there is no chemical change to the water but a physical change the ice is
just water molecules made of hydrogen and oxygen packed tightly together. But, another physical
change would be bending iron metal, the iron is still the same chemically whether it is made into I
beams, or pressed into shapes to make the body of a car; the shape may change but it never changes
chemically. In addition, a chemical change is the results in one or more substances that make up an
entirely different composition from the original substances. The compounds and/ or elements at the
start of the chemical reaction are rearranged into a new product of compounds or elements. Also a
chemical reaction alters the composition of the original matter, different elements or compounds are
present at the end of the chemical change. Although an example of a chemical reaction is the process
of rusting, you start with Iron mixed with air and water you get a different compound. Along with
chemical changes the Law of Conservation of Mass plays a part in it too. The Law of Conservation of

An Outlier is someone who stands out in a group due to their mastery of a certain skill and because of

younger players because they get more playing time, get placed on better teams, receive better

Fayol s Functions of Management
To what extent are Fayol s functions of management relevant in today s predominantly service
economy? Discuss.
Fayol s functions of management are as relevant today, just as they have been a century ago, both
theoretically and practically. Though under harsh scrutiny by some theorists as an oversimplified
theory of management, this essay argues that Fayol s functions are not just part of a grand theory, they
form a basis for all managerial work. In addition, Fayol s functions are seen as flexible and malleable,
adding to their application to today s world. This essay also suggests that today s predominantly
service economy, as fast paced and ephemeral as it is, is a stark proof of Fayol s theory s success. The
position is taken that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Further, this explains how Fayol s functions can be suited to a variety of managerial and organisational
contexts.
It is the combinational property of flexibility and authority that make Fayol s four functions relevant
today, even in a predominantly service economy. Managers today have had to learn to plan and
organise better than before in order to offer services beyond the physical product, they had to learn to
become stronger leaders in order to push away from traditional bricks and mortar markets and have
had to learn to be controlling in ensuring a smooth transition. Furthermore, they allowed managers to
become organisational experts, rather than skills experts, and hence the ability to work with large
markets and economies than physical products and machinery (Pryor Taneja, 2010). In addition, these
four functions have been so extensively used that management today is virtually synonymous with
them, if not structured around them (Lamond, 2003).
It is useful then, to see what happens when Fayol s functions are not observed, as in the case of the
Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDP). In this heavily service organisation (offering anything
from medication to dietary health programs to planning for the state s health future), the repercussions
of ignoring Fayol s principles were a public scandal circulating

The Battle Of Northern Virginia
22, 717 total casualties, the Battle of Antietam will go down as the bloodiest battle in American
history, even surpassing Pearl Harbor and even to the surprise of many, D Day. This battle was one of
many in the Maryland campaign for the Confederacy, but this battle will cost the Confederacy many
lives that will be of more significance to the Confederacy then the Union, as they have a larger
population to pull troops from. The Battle of Antietam was fought in the city of Sharpsburg, Maryland

Now the Union army had one major advantage, which you can also see throughout the whole war, and
that is the sheer numbers the Union had and could produce compared to the Confederacy. In the Battle
of Antietam, the Union army consisted of 65,000 men, where as the Confederacy only consisted of
40,000. One huge advantage that the Union had in this before the battle is originally General Robert E.
Lee planned on fighting somewhere else, but Confederate curries lose the opord for the attack which
Union cavalry found bringing it back to General McClellan giving him a massive advantage. Another
advantage the Union army has in this battle is the battle occurred in Maryland, which is Union
territory giving them the better advantage of using the terrain to their advantage. The beginning of the
battle started at the Battle of South Mountain. This was an attack led by 38,000 Union soldiers against
only 12,000 defending Confederate troops, where the Confederate soldiers ended up being pushed
back around dusk before the main battle began. By the end of this pre battle the Union ended up with
2,500 Union casualties and the Confederate taking a loss of 3,800 casualties. The significant factor of
this was General Lee made it look like he outnumbered General McClellan, but if he were to use his
full mass to to go over the Mountain and attack from there he would have had a much greater chance
of ending the battle with a major Union victory. Although he didn t because of the

Doctor Of Osteopathy Degree
I aim to pursue a Doctor of Osteopathy degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic
Medicine. But the question that may arise is why this school? Why choose to pursue a D.O. degree
instead of an M.D. degree? I prefer to study for the former, as it teaches students to treat a patient as a
whole person, rather than isolate a particular area and treat that alone. It teaches to take into account
all factors, all bodily systems, into one, when looking at a patient. I personally believe that is a key
when it comes to diagnosis and treatment. Having been established one hundred and ten years ago,

Fringe Wall Research Paper
The Mexico United States boundary is the subject of a lot of discussion in the United States.
Otherwise called the outskirt divider or fringe wall, it is developed of a few hindrances that are
planned to keep unlawful Mexican settlers from traversing the fringe into the United States. The
hindrances were initially worked as a major aspect of a three prong operation to reduce drug
transportation courses from Latin America and unlawful migration. Operation Gatekeeper is in
California, Operation Safeguard is in Arizona and Operation Hold the Line is in Texas.
The situation of the obstructions was a key push to relieve the stream of illicit fringe intersections into
the Southwest part of the United States. Lamentably, adversaries of the obstructions assert that they
are a channel on citizens cash and to a greater extent a political gambit. They see the Mexico United
States obstruction as an ineffectual impediment to illicit migration that at last and improperly risks the
wellbeing and soundness of individuals looking for asylum in the United States. Different concerns ...

What If I Just Lost Weight Essay
What if I just lost some weight... says most girls once in their life. Woman are constantly putting their
bodies through awful diets and harsh workouts, just to become perfect in someone else eyes. Woman
and young girls see figures of other women with a double zero pants size and ask why can t I look like
that? Today society puts too much pressure on young women to have the perfect body. What society
needs to say is all women are beautiful, there is no such thing as the perfect body. Today, women are
putting down other woman for being a size fourteen. The men in our society are not helping either, by
making a woman feel her body is not excepted, by saying they have a preference of a woman. Images
like this get stuck in the average Americans mind and they start to paint a picture of perfection.
Women tend to be judged on the basis of what they look like, not who they are, and the more positive
the evaluation, the more likely a woman is to be valued by others... (Strelan, P., Hargreaves, D. May
2005). America has this problem today because of the media, the objectification of woman, and how
women carry themselves. Within the Media The media takes a big part in how people in society get
their image of perfect. From music videos, TV, beauty pageants, magazines, and social media all
contribute to building the image of a perfect woman. There is no way to avoid seeing these types of
images because everyday citizens encounter these types of media throughout the day.

Nurses are left with dilemmas when it comes to decision making and trying to up holds the ethics of

Tragic Character Of Hercules
Despite Hercules mistakes, he maintains his heroic stature because of his unusual character. Unlike
many Greek mythology personalities, Hercules holds himself accountable, has many unbelievable
achievements, and is loyal to those around him. Due to his birth, Hera is constantly throwing obstacles
in Hercules way. These obstacles and Hercules impulsiveness contribute to many of his mistakes, but
he heavily atones for it. His overall character is one of the many reasons why the gods had mercy on
him regardless of his crimes. In majority of Greek myths, characters often have no remorse or guilt
after committing crimes. An example would be Daedalus, who pushed his nephew off a cliff over
jealousy and felt wronged when others accused him of the heinous crime. On the other hand, Hercules
feels the need to thoroughly punish and redeem himself after minor accidents. This quality is proved
through this quote from Edith Hamilton s Mythology, He went willingly ready to do anything that
could make him clean again (231). After Hera made him mindlessly kill his family, the Oracle
consulted him and said his cousin, Eurystheus, the King of Mycenae, would be able to thoroughly
purge him. This resulted in the twelve labors that were supposed to clean him, by being near
impossible and highly dangerous. There is no doubt that Hercules is the only person who would be
able to accomplish this feat. His guilt and need to make amends show that Hercules stayed true to
himself and did not let

Examples Of Superstition In Julius Caesar
Superstition and the Supernatural Superstition and the supernatural have been around since people
first inhabited the earth. However, as society has progressed, these beliefs have been seen as naïve and
foolish. Nevertheless, superstition was a major part in Roman life and thus William Shakespeare uses
superstition and the supernatural in his play Julius Caesar. Superstition and the supernatural held great
importance in the time of Caesar and often influenced the decisions people made. Superstition is
defined as a belief or way of behaving that is based on fear of the unknown and faith in magic or luck.
Supernatural is defined as things that cannot be explained according to natural laws. In Julius Caesar,

Caesar s death, which again furthers the plot. The soothsayer also develops Caesar as arrogant and
proud. Caesar choosing between superstitious events also shows and develops his arrogance. Finally,
Brutus seeing Caesar s ghost is again another example of foreshadowing as the ghost predicts the
death of Brutus, which again progresses the plot. The event also shows that Brutus is second guessing
his decision of betraying Caesar. Superstition and the supernatural made Julius Caesar what it was, a
play full of fateful decisions. Although Caesar was arrogant, that was what him such a great leader.

The Biomedical Model of Health Essay
The bio medical model of ill health has been at the forefront of western medicine since the end of the
eighteenth century and grew stronger with the progress in modern science. This model underpinned
the medical training of doctors. Traditionally medicine had relied on folk remedies passed down from
generations and ill health was surrounded in superstition and religious lore with sin and evil spirits as
the culprit and root of ill health. The emergence of scientific thinking questioned the traditional
religious view of the world and is linked to the progress in medical practice and the rise of the
biomedical model. Social and historical events and circumstances were an important factor in its
development as explanations about disease ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the sociology of medicine Parson (1951) regarded medicine as functional in social terms. By
tackling the person s problems in medical terms the tendency towards deviance that was represented
by ill health could be safely directed, until they could return to their normal self. (Lawrence 1994: p
64 65: BMJ 2004: Parson cited in Gabe, Bury Elston 2006, p 127).
The biomedical model relies on several assumptions including the concept of mind body dualism with
the mind and body seen as separate entities and accepting that they can be treated separately. The body
itself was viewed as machine with a broken part that could be repaired or healed by an expert. There is
a belief that a disease has its origin in a specific and knowable cause. The sick body can be examined,
treated and repaired without taking other factors into consideration. The doctor holds a detached view
of the patient and treats the body in isolation without considering other reasons that contribute to the
condition.
(Barry Yuill p 25; Giddens p 392; Nettleton pp: 3 4).
Disease is regarded as a failure within the body that changes it from its usual healthy self. In keeping
with the germ theory the disease can be identified as a micro organism and the cause of the disease
isolated then treated to restore the body to full health. This technological imperative places great
emphasis on surgical procedures and pharmacological

The main idea of market efficiency reflects that all the information which is associated with stock

Hollywood is Falling
In 1946, Hollywood reached its highest attendance peak and was having one of its most successful
years. The silver screen was growing in numbers, sales, and was reaching a multitude of cinematic
achievements. They were at the top of the film industry and they believed they were indestructible.
Unbeknown to them, Hollywood was going to face some major issues that would result in their

Hollywood, after World War II, had high hopes that their business would blossom even further once
the doors opened in the foreign market trade. Hollywood was dominating the nation and they believed
their films would soon dominate the world. However, their calculations were off and they did not take
into account that foreign cinemas were in serious trouble. In other countries, the cinemas had to shut
down or many were destroyed in the war. The foreign film market was slowly rebuilding itself and
was focused on financially stabilizing its business. Then, when American movies started pouring into
their countries, the foreign cinemas had to place tariffs and restrictions on box office revenues being
sent to America. And they even had to place quotas on the amount of American films shown in foreign
theaters. This caused Hollywood to take a major hit financially. There were little to no profits earned
from the foreign market and Hollywood began to slowly decline. Overseas markets may have punched

challenge. However, since this machine drives a fan, it is noisy to operate which can be annoying. It is
ideal for taller individuals due to its longer rail, but this also means it is difficult to store discreetly.
This can be the best rowing machine to choose if you really want a machine that gives you a rowing

The World s Foremost Economic And Military Power
The USA is the world s foremost economic and military power, with global interests and an
unmatched global reach.
America s gross domestic product accounts for close to a quarter of the world total, and its military
budget is reckoned to be almost as much as the rest of the world s defence spending put together.
The country is also a major source of entertainment: American TV, Hollywood films, jazz, blues, rock
and rap music are primary ingredients in global popular culture.
The United States originated in a revolution which separated it from the British Crown. The
constitution, drafted in 1787, established a federal system with a division of powers which has
remained unchanged in form since its inception.

Sleep Deprivation Is A Common Problem
Intricate human bodies are much like carefully crafted machines. Each function has a purpose, and
each need has a particular function. And, much like a machine, bodies can replenish their power,
repair themselves, and fail and break down. One particular necessity for human bodies is sleep, and if
not acquired, numerous complications can emerge. Sleep deprivation is a common problem that is all
too often overlooked as a mere loss of a night s rest. What most people do not realize is the potential
problems sleep deprivation can cause. From undesired grouchiness and uninhibited yawns, to constant
illness and a failing mental state, sleep deprivation is condition that is nothing to be taken lightly. In
fact, it can cause an otherwise healthy person to slowly shut down and break, just as a machine does
without power. Sleep deprivation is simply the state of not having enough sleep. It can affect anybody,
and has become an ever increasing peril in today s world. Consequently, according to the National
Sleep Foundation s inaugural Sleep Health Index™, as of December, 2014, Forty five percent of
Americans say that poor or insufficient sleep affected their daily activities at least once in the past
seven days, To fully understand Sleep deprivation though, the knowledge of the process of sleeping
must be obtained. Sleep is a crucial component of every human s regime. Not only does the process of
sleep provide essential benefits to the human body, as does the actual

Matthew Doublets
The issued with the doublets
In the Matthew s account of the Gospel as well as in the Luke s there are several duplicates of the
same text, while in the Gospel of Mark the same text appears only once, one of this examples is found
in Mark, in the parable of the measure, (Mk. 4:25[NRSV]). The same declaration, almost word for
word appears twice in separate occasions in Matthew verses 13:12 and in 25:29 and in Luke 8:18 as
well as in 19:26. The same dynamic appears twenty two times in Matthew where as according to
scholars who support the outside sources theory, the doublets mentioned above allegedly prove that
the writers of Matthew and Luke both took liberty in benefiting from the Markan account as well as
the Q , M and that of the L sources. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
More than a few explanations have been given. First of all, scholars have contemplated the idea that
there is a possibility that there were two men in each occasion and that Mark has left one demoniac
out of the picture. Since Mark, is said by scholars to have written at least two decades before any of
the evangelicals. While this might be understood in Mark 10:46, when he mentions by name one of
the blind men or perhaps only one of them continued to followed Jesus, this is more of a problem in
this passage. What would have been the reason for the author of Mark to leave one person out? In the
case of the two demoniacs is it not more frightening and more dangerous and therefore a more
significant of a miracle to be challenged by two demonized men than one? It is difficult to understand
why the two Mark and Luke, who of course may have never read Matthew, would be so consistently
different without any reason or hidden agendas. Secondly, some experts have disputed that it is merely
the nature of miracle stories to grow in the telling. This elucidation is totally unsophisticated and
simplistic. Moreover, if the stories were overstated, why the number would always be two? Why
would it not some of the stories have had two or four, perhaps seven or six? The probabilities for this
to accord are minor, however, that the doubling is simply due to such a

Benefit Of Artificial Technology
Today we are living in a second renaissance, because of the wide spread of knowledge about our
world. With knowledge spreading like fire, new and better technology has transformed our society,
such as communication, transportation, and weaponry systems. Through the field of engineering, now
AI (known as artificial intelligence) is next in line to transform our society. In the American society
robots have taken a bad rap, because of the belief that robots will take over jobs. Negative views over
artificial intelligence can be even seen in movies such as The Terminator . But however the truth about
artificial intelligence is that it is beneficial for the future of our society because it will create new and
better jobs, it also will better our living conditions, and will impact the power of America in our world.
Making artificial intelligence better and smarter in America will benefit us because it will create better
and new jobs. It is true that new artificial intelligence technology will displace jobs, but however by
taking away laborious jobs, it will forge a movement of new companies and help Americans pursue
enjoyable jobs that are made. For example, CEO of Narrative Science, Stuart Frankel, said Look at
almost every technology job that exists in any enterprise today. None of those jobs existed twenty
years ago, and most of them probably didn t even exist ten years ago. . What Stuart Frankel said is
true, looking at employment today new technology has created more

How Nikki Is Important to The Woman in the Dunes
How Nikki is important to the novel The Woman in the Dunes
The novel Woman in the Dunes, written by Kobo Abe the protagonist Nikki Jumpei is a key figure in
developing the three main themes, alienation, impotency, and submission. Nikki Jempei is used to
develop the theme of alienation because he experiences alienation and he also alienates others. Nikki s
role in shaping the theme of impotency is important because without Nikki there would be no way of
weaving the theme into the novel. Another theme that Nikki is crucial in developing is the theme of
submission. His role in shaping these themes are what makes the novel complete. Nikki does not fit in
with the social norms of society. He is not a popular individual at his workplace and he does not seem
to have many friends. He is put into a situation that shows how alienated he is from the world.
Because he is already alienated emotionally from society when Kobo Abe puts Nikki into a situation
where he becomes both emotionally and physically alienated from the world. He is put into a situation
where he is being isolated from any other environment other than the sand dunes. In the sand dunes he
is in a worn down house that is covered in sand and there is literally no way for him to interact with
anyone but the woman. Nikki cannot accept the life that she leads and his attitude towards her is quite
sharp. During his captivity he cannot stop thinking about his now former life. Although we know that
Nikki is

What Does The Poem Thou Blind Man s Mark Mean
Thou Blind Man s Mark dramatizes the speaker s inner desires versus his realistic and virtuous side
that denounces desires. The first three lines open up the subject of desire with, Thou blind man s mark,
thou fool s self chosen snare, that continuous to listen very different types of people that have desires.
The introduction of the blind man s target is also important as it shows the Speaker s opinion of desire
as a whole. Desire is seen as an unrealistic hope and something opposite of reality of life. The speaker
goes on to exclaim, Desire, desire! I have too dearly bought, which reflects the shift of this poem to
the author s opinions and attitude. Desire as something to be brought shows that a sacrifice must be
made to even have a desire, whether to God or to the human mind. The attitude is that of sacrifice for
something worthless. With price of mangled mind, thy worthless ware, shows exactly what the
speaker meant in the line above, that desire is some worthless good that hurts someone, that could
compare to a drug in today in modern times. Even in the 16th century there was wasteful people that
desire, and yet do not live. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even the last line, Desiring naught but how to kill desire, is contradicting as you cannot follow this
author s advice without desire, the force he is against. The Rhyme Scheme is fairly consistent abab for
two thirds of the poem, but in line five the pattern is broken which signals the speaker s refusal to be
apart of this, Thou web of will! Whose end is never wrought. Aspire, fire, hire, desire are the far end
rhymes that are used effectively to start wrapping up his whole argument against desire and finding
power from

A rise in population leads to an increase of demand for natural resources. The potential of a rise in
living standards is directly linked to the available employment opportunities. In the developing
economies in africa this is not possible at the moment without the help of external factors. This is
where the world bank and I.M.F. come into action. The loans provided by such organizations allow for
the governments of said economies to create employment opportunities and provide a benefit to the
community. (References)
China
Take China for example. Until this day China has one of the most developed economy and is still
developing at a very rapid rate. They have a current gdp of 9.24 trillion, their population is now
around 1.37 population, china s gdp increases by 10% every year, they have recently became the
second largest economy, and they play a very essential part in the world s economy. Although china
has developed their economy that far, they still have issues with their economy. China has the most
polluted cities in the world, you can clearly see the tribble condition of the air, because they don t
control their emission rates properly. Any economy that develops this much, must also account for its
environment. According to the statistics China also has the second highest number of people living in
poverty.(2016 The World Bank). With this information you can say that you must find an equal
balance of developing the economy but also staying

Predestination to Choose
Perspectives on Church
Predestined to Choose First, predestination must be defined so that a contrast can be made with free
will. Predestination is the divine foreordaining of all that will happen. Predestination deals with the
question of the control God has over the world, it also refers to the belief that God appointed the
eternal destiny of some (the elect) to salvation by grace, while leaving the remainder (the reprobate) to
receive eternal damnation for all their sins. Free will, However, will be defined to mean a person
which has the ability and awareness to choose whether they will accept Jesus Christ as their Savior or
not. By trying to understand what scripture has to say on free will and predestination, and analyzing
what other theological thinkers say, brings up the question, can one be more accurate than the other?
What we believe as Christians does (and should) affect how we live. How Christians view the
relationship between divine sovereignty and human freedom has a direct bearing on how they respond
to various issues in their lives. For example, [T]he missionary candidate who is having difficulty
raising her support. She may believe God is closing the door to her present plans and leading her in
another direction. ... Another [may] conclude that he is not working hard enough to raise the money
herein lies the issue of which is correct free will or predestination, and can one concept be proven over
the other. Believing in predestination is the

  • 2. Critical Animal Studies, Thinking About Animals In the spring of 2011, students, professors, and community members met at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario for the 10th Annual North American Conference for Critical Animal Studies (CAS). The conference, Thinking About Animals, was co hosted between the Institute for Critical Animal Studies (ICAS) and Brock s Department of Sociology. Conference participants covered a wide array of topics through panels and presentations that discussed the links between human and animal oppression/liberation, gender and meat consumption, postcolonial studies, animal liberation theory, abolitionist history, social attitudes and prejudice, veganism, and activist repression. There were also those which focused entirely on vivisection, farmed animals, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Within this conference space and CAS as a whole, I had finally found a home for my interests in the decolonial politics of transnational and postcolonial feminism, politics of race and culture, and narratives about animals agency and resistance. My presentation, A Transnational Feminist Critique of the U.S. Slaughterhouse System, discussed how both the animals killed in slaughterhouses and the undocumented workers employed there are exploited by animal agribusiness and relegated to the margins of society. Inspired by Sara Ahmed s concept of the stranger, a paradoxical figure who is perceived as strange due to their race and otherness, I argued that human and nonhuman others are perceived as unlawful intruders due to both racism and speciesism. Thus, they are expelled from the white, human, and civilized community to maintain social hierarchies and private property. The presentation included a slide of a cow escaping from a slaughterhouse into an urban neighborhood. Showing the complexity of human animal encounters, the cow, who was later named Molly, was both removed as an unlawful intruder from the community into which she fled, but also invoked public affection (a ballad honoring her can be found on youtube). A decolonial method of studying animal resistance attempts to read documents from the perspective of nonhuman animals such as Molly and recognizes the centrality of capitalist globalization and white human supremacy in oppressive social ... Jack Roosevelt Robinson is known as a hero to many people because of his bravery and courage to fight for what s right. Because of his courage to fight for equal rights, the challenges he faced, and his legacy and lasting impact on the world of baseball, Jackie Robinson is a very heroic figure. Equal rights for baseball was a fight that Jackie fought. Accepting Rickey s offer to play with the Royals at first, then the Dodgers, he was accepting the challenge to fight for equal rights. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many awards were given to him for his accomplishments. For example, he was the first to be awarded rookie of the year for all of baseball, not just the National League. Therefore, the rookie of the year award was named after Jackie in 1987. (Maddux Zito 482) This evidence suggests that what he did to the world of baseball made a big enough impact to have an award named after him. Next, many people were inspired by Jackie. His popularity grew with everyone. About half of the Major League players were black by the 1970 s. Also, songs were written because of him, a comic book was made, and a movie was created called Jackie Robinson. (Graf 3) This logically implies that Jackie became a heroic figure and inspired everyone. Last of all, Robinson impacted so many people that he has his own day celebrated by many. 42 is the number he wore. Today it has been retired so nobody else in the Major Leagues can wear it except on Jackie Robinson Day. The man who helped change the course of the game and more importunity, our country. was what Jackie was known as. (Graf 3,4) This example demonstrates how he made a major impact on everyone off and on the baseball field. Because of Robinson s courage, he has a lasting impact to this ... Some academics speculate, based on existing accounts, that this election was conducted amongst a small group of tribal leaders who actively prevented Ali s participation by involving him with the task of caring for a dying Muhammad. Some even task Abu Bakr and Omar s children (including Aisha) with distracting Ali to the point of intentional obstruction. This remains the primary disagreement between Sunni and Shi a Islam. Surgical Considerations For Implant Placement Nadia Rhebi, nar344@nyu.edu, 201 496 4914 12/7/14 3:16 PM Indications and Surgical Considerations for Implant Placement in Maxillary Incisive Canal a Case Series Rhebi, Nadia; Ochoa Durand, Daniel; Suzuki, Takanori; Cho, Sang Choon; Froum, Stuart Introduction Implant surgery in the edentulous premaxilla is often challenging because of esthetic, phonetic and biomechanical considerations. In the maxilla, resorption following tooth extraction occurs mainly within the first 3 12 months post operatively (1). Bone resorption following tooth loss occurs in both a lingual and apical direction, resulting in an edentulous maxilla that is narrower with a loss of vertical height. This resorption is responsible for the edge to edge or reverses occlusal relation of the residual crests that is often observed in patients with completely edentulous maxillae (2). At times, ridge resorption in the maxilla is so severe that is necessary to augment the bone in order to place an implant. In some cases, conventional ridge augmentation cannot build enough bone to place implants, especially in fully edentulous cases. A number of bone augmentation methods have been developed specifically for implant placement in the severely resorbed maxilla. These include split ridge augmentation (3), distraction osteogenesis (4), ridge augmentation using guided bone regeneration with various kinds of graft materials, and sinus augmentation (5). Most of these procedures are not only technique sensitive and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. The Unicorn And The Wasp Analysis The murder mystery is a genre of literature that has been tackled by many authors over its long history. Agatha Christie is not just any author though, as her work in renovating the detective genre, has seemingly perfected the art of solving a murder. Perhaps this is why her books have been sold more than any other novelist, only being beaten out by the works of Shakespeare, and the bible. Crooked House is one of those many, many books she has authored. In it, she took the opportunity to poke fun at, and break the rules of, the very formula of the detective, that she helped make popular. One might say that Crooked House parodies the detective novel, and it is in that spirit, that the Doctor Who episode adapts the novel. The Unicorn and the Wasp is definitely a parody of the murder mystery form. Agatha Christie novels in particular are the focus of its many silly allusions, so it is not surprise that an analogy to Crooked House is formed. Not content with merely parodying her style, Doctor Who adds a splash of its style, with the typical alien occult element, that the shows is famous for. With its mash of elements of the form, and its usual flair of weird, The Unicorn and the Wasp , sees itself paying respect to a literary genius. Parody, in Leitch s terms, is an adaptation, that instead of copying a text/style, it seeks to satirize it, via subtle ways of poking at the sources elements (Leitch, pgs. 116 188). • 13. The Anzacs And The Development Of Nationalism In Australia... The ANZACs were a significant influence in the development of nationalism in Australia during World War One (WWI). Throughout WWI, Australian formed the fundamentals of the now universally recognised Australian identity. The ANZACs played a crucial role in the establishment of a mixture of both cultural and triumphal nationalism as Australia s exposure to other cultures during WWI saw them no longer recognised as an extension of Britain but an independent group of competent men and women that could equal their Commonwealth forefathers in the war effort. Thus, forming a distinct identity and sense of nationalism that s significance, decades after WWI, remained strongly associated with the WWI ANZACs. Nationalism is seen to have two origins. ... How are stem cells being used today? Where do scientists get stem cells? Why is so much controversy over the stem cells? How does a zygote develop into a baby? Why a zygote is considered a stem cell? A stem cell is an immature cell that can help reproduce different types of cells throughout the body. There are three types of stem cells that I will be focusing on : adult, embryonic, and totipotent stem cells. Adult stem cells can be found in children and infants. These stem cells are found in small numbers in most adult tissues, such as bone marrow or fat.Adult stem cells are used to repair tissue throughout the body, therefore the adult cells are used to replace dying or lost cells in the body.Totipotent stem cells are the one and only type of stem cell that can be used anywhere throughout the whole body. They are formed when a sperm cell and a cell egg unite to make a one celled fertlized egg.The research on all the cells is limited because of the challenge receiving them in laboratory. Embryonic stem cells are produced when newly fertilized eggs begin to divide. Unlike adult stem cells, these cells can go anywhere throughout the body. So what type of people actually need stem cells for their health? But, another physical change would be bending iron metal, the iron is still the same chemically whether it is made into I beams, or pressed into shapes to make the body of a car; the shape may change but it never changes chemically. In addition, a chemical change is the results in one or more substances that make up an entirely different composition from the original substances. The compounds and/ or elements at the start of the chemical reaction are rearranged into a new product of compounds or elements. Also a chemical reaction alters the composition of the original matter, different elements or compounds are present at the end of the chemical change. Although an example of a chemical reaction is the process of rusting, you start with Iron mixed with air and water you get a different compound. The primary factor in how good they become at hockey is the better opportunities they received because of their age. When applying Gladwell s Outlier theory The outliers in a particular field reached their lofty status through a combination of ability, opportunity, and utterly arbitrary advantage (37) the birth date of the hockey players serves a crucial role and is just an arbitrary advantage. Fayol s functions of management are as relevant today, just as they have been a century ago, both theoretically and practically. Though under harsh scrutiny by some theorists as an oversimplified theory of management, this essay argues that Fayol s functions are not just part of a grand theory, they form a basis for all managerial work. In addition, Fayol s functions are seen as flexible and malleable, adding to their application to today s world. It is the combinational property of flexibility and authority that make Fayol s four functions relevant today, even in a predominantly service economy. Managers today have had to learn to plan and organise better than before in order to offer services beyond the physical product, they had to learn to become stronger leaders in order to push away from traditional bricks and mortar markets and have had to learn to be controlling in ensuring a smooth transition. Furthermore, they allowed managers to become organisational experts, rather than skills experts, and hence the ability to work with large markets and economies than physical products and machinery (Pryor Taneja, 2010). In addition, these four functions have been so extensively used that management today is virtually synonymous with them, if not structured around them (Lamond, 2003). It is useful then, to see what happens when Fayol s functions are not observed, as in the case of the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDP). One huge advantage that the Union had in this before the battle is originally General Robert E. Unlike many Greek mythology personalities, Hercules holds himself accountable, has many unbelievable achievements, and is loyal to those around him. Due to his birth, Hera is constantly throwing obstacles in Hercules way. These obstacles and Hercules impulsiveness contribute to many of his mistakes, but he heavily atones for it. His overall character is one of the many reasons why the gods had mercy on him regardless of his crimes. In majority of Greek myths, characters often have no remorse or guilt after committing crimes. An example would be Daedalus, who pushed his nephew off a cliff over jealousy and felt wronged when others accused him of the heinous crime. On the other hand, Hercules feels the need to thoroughly punish and redeem himself after minor accidents. This quality is proved through this quote from Edith Hamilton s Mythology, He went willingly ready to do anything that could make him clean again (231). After Hera made him mindlessly kill his family, the Oracle consulted him and said his cousin, Eurystheus, the King of Mycenae, would be able to thoroughly purge him. (Lawrence 1994: p 64 65: BMJ 2004: Parson cited in Gabe, Bury Elston 2006, p 127). The biomedical model relies on several assumptions including the concept of mind body dualism with the mind and body seen as separate entities and accepting that they can be treated separately. The body itself was viewed as machine with a broken part that could be repaired or healed by an expert. There is a belief that a disease has its origin in a specific and knowable cause. The sick body can be examined, treated and repaired without taking other factors into consideration. The doctor holds a detached view of the patient and treats the body in isolation without considering other reasons that contribute to the condition. (Barry Yuill p 25; Giddens p 392; Nettleton pp: 3 4). Disease is regarded as a failure within the body that changes it from its usual healthy self.
