Titanium’s special property of fusing to bone, called osseointegration (“osseo” – bone; “integration” – fusion or joining with), is the biological basis of dental implant success. That’s because when teeth are lost, the bone that supported those teeth is lost too. Placing dental implants stabilizes bone, preventing its loss. Along with replacing lost teeth, implants help maintain the jawbone’s shape and density. In 2003, a refinery began a program to apply advanced composite wear rings, line shaft bearings, and related components. By September 2006, the program had expanded to 61 pumps, at which point plant personnel quantified results. The reliability impact of the program was evaluated using pump repair history, vibration records, and mechanical seal emissions data.
Results indicate that the program has been successful. Failures within the subject population decreased by 45%, overall vibration levels fell by an average of 25%, and mechanical seal emissions failures (for pumps subject to testing) dropped by 70%. These results suggest that proper application of composite materials can lead to improved reliability, and should be one of the options considered by plants seeking to increase their pump life.

- 4. Overall Problem Some conditions which require surgery: Slippage of the spine Chronic degenerative disc disease Fracture Spinal conditions such as scoliosis Surgical procedures are used to facilitate fusion, correct deformities, and stabilize/strengthen spine
- 5. Current Methods Most spinal implants made of metals such as titanium, titanium-alloy, or stainless steel Come in many different shapes and sizes to accommodate different patients of all ages Scientists and surgeons constantly working to develop and refine implants to improve patient outcomes Advent of hook, rod, and screw systems have enabled surgeons to 3-dimensionally correct spinal deformities Development of special plates and cages to promote spinal fusion Small but strong implants for children
- 6. Problem with Current Methods Multiple surgical procedures for the placement/removal of spinal implants Some implants are biodegradable, however the screws are not May require an additional surgery for removal. Otherwise, just left in the body itself
- 7. Our Method and Goal Design an implant utilizing a biodegradable metal Each part of the implant is made of this biodegradable metal Requires only a single surgery Degrades at a rate similar to the healing of the patient (when the implant is fully degraded, patient should be healed)
