However, the idea of giving a presentation makes many people break out into a cold sweat of apprehension. Effective public speaking, pitching and presenting is about getting your message across. It’s not just about engaging your audience with what you have to say; it’s also about how you say it.

Structure Blocks What to Say The Beginning Earn The Right This is your introduction and your opportunity to engage the audience and build rapport It must cover who you are, what you do and what gives you the right to speak about this subject It must demonstrate your expertise and your potential to answer their questions or solve their problems It should be short, succinct and punchy Find the Pain This is where you specifically identify the problem the audience may have or the solution / answer they need This is also an excellent time to use questioning techniques such as Enrolling and Polling questions The Content The Problem (1) This is where you outline why the problem (pain) has not been solved so far You must reassure the audience that the right tools to solve the problem have not been available until now and outline how you will be able to deal with their problem The Problem (2) This is your time to shine To back up the statement that you are able to solve their problem you can outline your credentials, experience, share testimonials etc Possibilities This is where you take the audience, step-by-step , through the solution to their problem The Conclusion Call to Action Tell the audience what they should do now, for example, call, buy, sign-up, tell others, enrol etc. CALL TO ACTION etc. Always end on something punchy Make sure the audience knows you have finished speaking Thank them for their attention

- IT IS NORMAL TO BE NERVOUS! Keys to breaking the fear factor – the most powerful place to present is outside your comfort zone! Admit your nerves – nerves are part of the territory Tap into the energy that fear produces (adrenalin) Recognise that fear is normal – Lawrence Olivier, Rod Stewart See the audience as an ally – they are not there to ‘get you’ PPP – prepare, prepare, prepare / practice, practice, practice WARM UP ACTIVITY Your body – move about Your face – 180 muscles – you use more smiling, so use them! Your breathing – intercostal breathing, i.e., deep breaths that draw up the ribcage PROJECTING YOUR VOICE ACTIVITY Keep your head up Speak slightly slower than normal Open your mouth more widely Enunciate Breath from the diaphragm “The lips, the teeth and the tip of the tongue” FOCUS It is not about you – it is about them. Stop thinking about yourself
- BEFORE YOU TALK Breathe deeply Think of something funny – it will make you smile and relax your face After you have been introduced – leave a slight pause before you start to speak BODY LANGUAGE Stand with your weight evenly distributed Leave your arms at your side until you need to use them Hand movements are natural! But don’t overdo it Smile Keep eye contact ‘plant’ your feet to stop you from swaying VOICE Speak more slowly than normal Vary the pace, tone and pitch of your voice Pauses are essential Use silence
- BEGINNING A strong opening – cf building a relationship Introduce the subject and give an overview of content Establish your credibility Welcome the audience and thank them for coming Use their names if possible Let them know why they are attending Ask questions Let them know why you are there Let them know you are in control! MIDDLE No audience overload! 20/30 minutes – 2-3 major points 30/45 minutes – 4-5 major points 60 minutes – up to 7 major points Make each point memorable – stories, figures, anecdotes END Closing summary – tell them what you told them! Call to Action Thank them for their time and attention Give them something to remember at the end –punchy!!
