Spain had an early presence in Georgia beginning in 1526 when Ayllon established a brief colony on Sapelo Sound. DeSoto explored the area in 1540. Permanent Spanish missions were established among the Guale and Mocamo peoples in the 1580s. However, these missions were eventually abandoned by 1686 due to slaving attacks from neighboring British colonies in South Carolina, which had allied with local Native American groups.
