honor of Prince Philip;
 Before it was explored, Chinese traders named it “Ma-Yi”
meaning “Land of Gold”
 It is the collection of more than 7000 beautiful islands;
 The Spanish held the islands for 350 years before seating
them to the U.S. in 1899;
 However, U.S. abandoned claims to the country in 1991;
 During WWII, largest naval battle in history was fought in
Philippine seas & it was U.S. fighting against Japan in 1944;
 Philippine is an Archipelago & it is known as the “pearl of
the orient”;
 Philippine is the first Republic in Asia continent;

Catholicism in the Philippines a special nationwide
personality.
• Other major religions include Islam (the second
largest religion in the country), Evangelical Protestant
Christians affiliated with the PCEC(Philippine Council
