Police Authority, Police Power and Police Use of Force Essay
Abstract
This paper will describe police power and police authority. I will also talk about police discretion as
for as whom gets locked up and who is allowed to go free. This paper will discuss the different use
of police force. In this paper I will also talk about police attitude, police misconduct, and physical
abuse among police officers.
Most people confuse police authority with police power. What are police authority and or police
power? Souryal, (2007), stated, That Authority is the right to control the behavior of others within
legally determined parameter. These include constitutional and professional limitations, which are
designed to resolve conflicts in an orderly fashion. Authority stems from the practitioner s ... Show

The situation becomes more difficult when the practitioners feel threatened and stonewall the truth.
They perjure themselves, destroy evidence, or cover up significant facts . It is often said that no
one is above the law not even the police, although it seems that they appear to be at times. The
United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights protect the people from police brutality. Police use
of force is defined as the use of physical restraint by a police officer when dealing with a member
of the public. Law enforcement officers are authorized to use the amount of force that is
reasonable and necessary given the circumstances. Most officers are trained in the use of force and
typically encounter numerous situations during their careers when the use of force is appropriate
for example, when making some arrests, restraining unruly combatants, or controlling a disruptive
demonstration. Force may involve hitting: holding or restraining, pushing, choking threatening
with a flashlight, baton, or chemical or pepper spray; restraining with a police dog, or
threatening with a gun and some police use of force include handcuffing , according to
Schmalleger, (2008). A greater type of police force is excessive force. According to Schmalleger,
(2008), The International Association of Chiefs of Police defines excessive force as the application

As mentioned above, my essay Rabbits and Convicts won North American Review s Torch Prize
for creative nonfiction in June 2015. The essay follows the importation of rabbits into Australia,
their explosion mirroring the descendants of English convicts spread across the landscape. It
comes at a point in the book manuscript, in a section titled The Pacific, where I expand my
profiling of misfit species to include other parts of the world, adding both geographic and historical
layers. This essay also features a removed narrator, so the audience can focus on the subject of the
conquistadors of Australia, both four legged and two. The work takes us out of the realm of
environmental devastation to include cultural legacies and entwines them within

To summarize, there have been times throughout journalistic history when deception and taking
sides was acceptable, but objectivity and responsibility were largely considered to be professional
standards as we entered the 21st century.
Deontology and Utilitarianism
Of the many methods for applying ethical theories to war reporting, I narrowed the choice down to
Deontology and Utilitarianism as referenced in the introduction.
Deontology involves applying a universal set of principles (Jordin 2009, p. 15)
. . . which makes the duty or the obligations we owe other human beings the fundamental principle
of ethics. Doing our duty is not based on a particular set of circumstances. Since acts are judged
only by their consequences, the means justify the ends.
Utilitarianism is defined by the consequences of actions, not the act s moral or intrinsic value.
Jordin (2009, p. 17) states, Where deontological theories thus talk more in terms about what is right,
consequentialist theories are more concerned with the good. Moral worth is determined by its
ability to produce the most amount of good for the greatest number. Here, the ends justify the
means.
How can these two standards help answer our ethical dilemma? We can answer this question by
examining a few cases from the current Iraq conflict and others.

The Federal Reserve Act Single Handedly Broke
The Federal Reserve This brings us to the Federal Reserve. The Federal Reserve is a private
entity that is not connected or governed by the United States. It came into existence in 1913 by
the Federal Reserve act. Many people believed are still believe it is a part of our government.
Sadly, they are greatly mistaken. It originated from Jekyll Island are very wealthy people
gathered to create it for their own selfish and personal gain from which only they controlled. The
founding fathers stated clearly in the Constitution that there should never be a central bank and
that gold and silver should be legal tender. The Federal Reserve act single handedly broke this
law with the issuance of paper currency. The main consensus would be that the American people
would now be able to store their gold and silver or wealth safely inside these banks behind both
doors for a small fee. In return they would be given paper notes correlating with the amount of
gold or silver they deposited in the bank. If they were to spend these notes at a merchant s store
the marching could then decide to go to the bank and deposit the notes for the equivalent in gold
or silver. It was such a great system that other countries decided to trust it and store their gold in
US banks. In return they also got US dollars. Seems like a pretty solid monetary system right?
Well it was for a while, until certain people started to become greedy. The people with control and
power took advantage of the system. Think

Analysis Of The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fist Fight In Heaven
Do you have issues with family members not being there for you? If so, you may be in a similar
situation as victor from The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fight In Heaven by Sherman Alexie.
Victor s father leaves their home and the reservation while victor is still young age leaving him to
live with his motheron the reservation. In Native American cultures, storytelling has historically
been used to convey morals, an understanding of life and death, and roles in society. Using the
fictional character Victor, Alexie takes this tradition to a new audience in order documents his
childhood struggles separation and distance from familyand how stories kept those who were absent
with him.
Family members can cause great deals of emotion when there is a separation. Victor s father
leaves home without warning when victor is an adolescent. Even though there is still a
meaningful bond between victor and his father as seen in the following quote, Come on back
inside, she said. it s cold. No, I said. I know he s coming back tonight. (p, 35). By waiting for his
father to come back Victor shows that there is a abound between them and that he is struggling with
his absence. Unfortunately, his father did not return and Victor, while struggling with his father s
abandonment, had to learn how to be a man on his own. A family member permanently leaving
while hard, is not the same as them just not being there.
Sometimes family members are absent or distracted from the family. One instance of this is
when Victor s father buys a motorbike and disappears because he is using his bike so much.
Victor s father didn t do much of anything except ride that bike and listen to music. (P, 32). By
only riding his bike and listening to music he is leaving Victor to grow up on his own not having
a proactive male role model in the immediate family. This can be harmful to anyone growing up
because the role they show you is the role of being absent for the family. One positive is that it
does give an example for you to try not to become when growing up. Sometimes we have to
remember those who are not in the family as well.
Remembering the family members not with us anymore can be just as important as them being
with us actively. One

Why Is Secrecy Important In The Scarlet Letter
Secrecy is the key to survival when surrounded by a scornful community that is ready to pounce on
anyone s sinful past. Concealment of one s feelings not only protects one s weaknesses but also
helps in avoiding conflicts with society. Many characters in The Scarlet Letter, particularly Hester,
Dimmesdale, and Chillingworth, hide their feelings in order to keep their dark pasts from the
grasps of both each other and the Puritan society that aches to condemn the sins of criminals. In
order to create suspense throughout the story and emphasize the importance of secrecy, Nathaniel
Hawthornehides the pasts of his obscure characters from not only the Puritan society within The
Scarlet Letterbut also from the community outside the novel: the readers. Although it is apparent...

However, the audience is never told what clues Chillingworth uncovers. In fact, Chillingworth s
thought processes are never revealed to us. For example, when he catches a glimpse of
Dimmesdale s chest in his house, the audience is not told of what he has seen. Even when
Dimmesdale reveals his chest to the Puritan crowd at the end of the novel to confess his secret
sin, the audience is still not told of what is on the chest. Interestingly, the crowd holds a variety
of accounts on what was on Dimmesdale s chest. Some say that there was a scarlet letter
imprinted on his chest while others deny that there was any mark whatever on his breast, more
than on a new born infant s, (236). We are only able to infer that there is some sort of A on
Dimmesdale s chest because he tells Hester, Happy are you, Hester, that wear the scarlet letter
openly upon your bosom! Mine burns in secret! (176). Hawthorne keeps the audience confused with
the ambiguity of Dimmesdale s confession by keeping the Puritan crowd disconcerted with the
different accounts of the

Essay On Russia s Sacrifices During World War II
Sacrifices Dr. Martin Johnson once said, The war affected every aspect of daily life, and meant
that everyone endured hardships and sacrifice (Dr. Martin Johnson 1). Everyone, everywhere
has at least lost a person of whom they loved so dearly to a war they believe should not be taken
part of. Sacrifices are made from the people who are willing to fight to protect of what s
important in life. Many others may lose their minds because their son, father husband, wife, etc,

Theory Of Perfectionism
According to Dunn, Whelton, and Sharpe (2006), due to working as academics involves having to
constantly receive criticism from colleagues and students as well as bearing the expectations to
deliver work in the highest standards, university academics are therefore seen as the most
appropriate group to represent the professional group for the study of perfectionism. The career as a
universityprofessor is indeed very challenging, whereby everyday work entails critical scrutiny from
peers. In addition to that, the environment that these professors have to face each day are somewhat
trying and unaccommodating (Gmelch, Wilke, Lovrich, 1986) which can further aggravate
dysfunctional personality tendencies. All these criteria may one way or the other give... Show more

According to a study conducted by Dr. Sherry and colleagues, it was found that the existence of a
high level of perfectionism among professors led to a lesser likelihood of them producing
publications, gaining valuable citations and also publishing their work in high impact journals or in
other words lower research productivity. This could impact their career in the long run due to the
more they had perfectionistic tendencies within them, the less productive they were in research.
Whereas there is general agreement in the literature on the definition of perfectionism, Dr. Sherry is
of the opinion that perfectionists are individuals who either strive to execute a task perfectly or not
executing it at all. They can never settle for less in anything that they do and may continuously
reflect on their abilities which can lead to an exaggerated self checking of not committing any
mistakes whatsoever (Charbonneau,

The Government Was Broken Following The Watergate Scandal
Trust in the government was broken following the Watergate Scandal, the American people doubted
the people running the country. Someone had to step forward and take the leadership position
where he would face a people who lacked trust in the government. Whoever took up this position
was going to face unusual circumstances and difficult obstacles from the first day of his
presidency, and that man was Gerald Ford. Ford was the only president to not be elected into
office. After serving in Congress for 25 years, he was looked up to for his flexibility, and had a
reputation for being open and honest. When Nixon s vice president resigned, Ford became Vice
President since he was someone that both democrats and republicans would accept. Having said
that, Ford had been successful as a house minority leader, but as a president he proved to be only
average (Gerald). Ford rates as average due to his decision in the Nixon pardon, his actions during
a poor economy, how he handled domestic issues, and his foreign policies. He may have had good
ideas, but he had trouble implementing them. About a month following his inauguration into office,
Ford pardoned his predecessor, Richard Nixon, following the Watergate scandal. This sparked anger
among Americans who were doubting not only the government, but the constitution. People
believed that when Ford pardoned Nixon, it was proof that our system was broken. Rumors spread

Threat Of Talkies
Threat of talkies
Up until the 1930 s all films had been silent. Theaters would hire piano players to give sound to the
audience, and life to the films. This would soon change starting with the growing popularity to use
soundtracks, instead of hired piano players, to accompany the film. Later leading to the use of full
sound throughout the picture. Chaplin, who had acquired fame and fortune from his work as a
silent film actor and director, was reluctant to make the move to full sound. Undoubtedly, he
must have wondered whether or not his film craft could survive the transition into the sound era.
In his own words, Smith (1984) noted, he realized [he] could never achieve the excellence of
[his] silent pictures [making sound films]. (p. 97). Leaving filmgoers to wonder whether
Chaplin s style of comedy could survive the change. As previously stated, films did transition
from silent to full sound right away. There was a gradual process that led up to Talkies . In 1925,
Chaplin came out with The Gold Rush , a completely silent film featuring Chaplin s trademark
character the Tramp , as a lonely prospector fighting against adversity while looking for love. The
Gold Rush , became one of the highest grossing films of the silent era and Chaplin felt that it was
the best film that he had made to that point in his career. A few years later, films such as Don Juan
(1926), and The Jazz Singer (1927) were released to the public, generating much enthusiasm due

Womanhood In The Scarlet Letter

of fact, being a woman is more than just the anatomy. Womanhood is a tricky concept. Women are
portrayed as delicate beings, but are held to extremely high standards by society. One of the most
famous stories The Scarlet Letter Is a story that begins in seventeenth century Boston. A woman
who is accused of adultery displays the scarlet letter A on her chest. Displaying the scarlet letter is
punishment for what she had done, along with the public shaming of course (Hawthorne). Setting

From a young age Clemencia s mother often warned her to never marry a Mexican man.
Clemencia s mother being a Mexican American and her father being Mexican born and raised,
she felt that she didn t belong to any particular class. Proof of this is when she states I m
amphibious. I m a person who doesn t belong to any class (Cisneros 111). Opening, it s a simple
observation that Clemencia is somewhat out of place, with little to no direction. Clemencia s
rooted values play a critical role in this story. Growing up, Clemencia witnessed her mother s acts
of adultery during the time that her father was sick and debilitated. Most daughters shift their
attention to their mothers for direction about womanhood, but it is possible she felt that she never
had her mother there in that sense. It s crucial to realize that like most adolescents, Clemencia

operate using a council manager form of government. For a city with a population of about
38,000, this type of governmental structure is fairly common, and I was not surprised to see it in
action in a community where the median household income is around $56,000 a year. Culver City
is also a culturally rich community with a 60 percent Caucasian population, and a quarter of the
residents are either of African American or Asian decent. The mayor, D. Scott Malsin, is one of

had a say, it was time to talk go through the consent calendar. A few of the consents were easily
passed with unanimous consent, but one council member, Christopher Armenta, and the vice
mayor, Gary Silbiger, had issues with C 5. On the calendar, this agenda item reads as the following,
Approval of Professional Services Agreements with Associated Soils Engineering, Inc., Geo
Environmental, Inc., and Zeiser Kling Consultants for Geotechnical Engineering and Construction
Services. Councilman Armenta was worried that the council would not have any oversight over the
process of awarding geotechnical service agreements to particular firms, and that the amounts given
to a particular firm could wind up being an exorbitant amount of money. Vice mayor Silbiger had
similar fears. Silbiger suggested that instead of contracting out a consultant, he wondered if there
could be a permanent consulting position, but the city manager disagreed because the city needs to
bring in all sorts of consultants with varying expertise. The city manager noted that one consultant
with limited range would have little to do much of the time, and the consultant would waste the
fiscal budget of the city. The mayor and the other councilmen tried to soothe Armenta and

Summary Of A Vindication Of The Rights Of Woman By Mary...
From A Vindication of the Rights of Woman by Mary Wollstonecraft is covering the importance
that women should have education in the eighteenth century. In her Vindication of the Rights of
Women it was a response towards Rousseau. She explains how philosophers like Rousseau were so
intelligent however they ignored the fact that women need to seek education as well. Wollstonecraft
gives her reasons on why women should value education in their lives and how it is beneficial. It is
crucial that women provide themselves with an education because knowledge will allow them to
overcome the burden that men set on them. During the eighteenth century Rousseau came up with
this theory that if men had education they can be unstoppable human beings. He... Show more

She is huge on the power of knowledge and reasoning so she uses that to her advantage when
arguing about her views for woman s rights. As Wollstonecraft implies, strengthen the female mind
by enlarging it, and there will be an end to blind obedience; but as blind obedience is ever sought
for by power, tyrants and sensualists are in the right when they endeavor to keep women in the
dark, because the former only want slaves and the latter a play thing. (136). She portrays herself
as a rational thinker when it comes to the issue with women. Wollstonecraft to a certain degree
faced hatred towards her reasoning but she doesn t allow that to stop what she believes. The men
in the times of the eighteenth century wouldn t approve of the actions that Wollstonecraft did
because they think that is manly of a woman to speak upon issues like that. There is also a sense
of pride and acknowledgment within her own reasoning with equality between men and women.
She is acknowledging within in her own knowledge because she isn t excluding anyone when it
comes to education. She believes everyone is capable of seeking after education and having a
chance. Therefore, Wollstonecraft tone and voice is highly favored because she speaks on what she
believes with confidence but without floundering out on a specific

Kudler Fine Food s Financial Position
Kudler CEO Financial Memo
The liquidity, profitability, and solvency ratios reveal some interesting points about Kudler Fine
Food s financial position. The liquidity ratios revealed that during 2002 and 2003, Kudler was
having no trouble paying short term debt. However, the current and acid test (quick) ratios showed
that during 2003 Kudler had an excess amount of cash that they were not investing properly. These
ratios also showed that Kudler was collecting receivables and selling average inventory very
quickly. The profitability ratios revealed that during 2002 and 2003, Kudler was using assets
efficiently and making a decent profit. The profit margin ratio showed that during 2002 Kudler
made a profit of four cents per dollar, and during 2003 they made a profit of roughly six cents per
dollar. In addition, the return on assets ratio (which is also a profitability ratio) showed that
Kudler utilized their assets efficiently enough to turn a profit. The solvency ratio used, which was
the debt to total assets ratio, showed that during 2002 and 2003 Kudler only had around a quarter
of their assets financed in debt. All of these ratios show that Kudler was a fairly strong company
financially during 2002 and 2003. When trying to figure out how successful Kudler Fine Foods is,
it is critical to review all financial statements. By using the horizontal and vertical analysis and the
determining ratio calculations the profitability, liquidity, and solvency are figured. A specific

Participants Perceptions Of Their Schools
Participants perceptions of their schools commitment to providing a multicultural education
inclusive of the three domains under inquiry (promotion of cultural competence, cultural
socialization, and critical consciousness) were represented under the theme entitled Patterns of
Practices of Diversity and Social Equality Awareness and Multicultural Education . This theme is
representative of all the methods through which our participants school systems sought to provide
their students with curricula that attempted to expand their understanding of issues surrounding
racismand discrimination, as well as expose them to cultures other than the dominant white culture
of the United States. These methods are categorized according to the subthemes Classes , Clubs,
Organizations, and Events , School wide Practices , and No Practices .
Classes
Participants in the current study expressed having been exposed to different cultures in a classroom
setting. Much of this exposure occurred in Advanced Placement courses and courses related to the
Humanities and Social Sciences, such as History, Government, Social Studies, Language, and
Psychology. For example, one participant described an assignment for an AP Spanish class, in
which students were given the opportunity to further their knowledge and others on a country and
culture of their own choosing:

The Economic Development Of The World Economy
Since the 1990s, the world economy has undergone profound historical changes that focus is

Nike s Company Strategy Is A Clever One
Strengths
Company owns no factories: Nike s company strategy is a clever one. While still in school at
Stanford, the founder Phil Knight thought that instead of paying Americans to put together Nike s
shoes, Knight believed that it would be best to take their manufacturing plants oversees, to places
where the labor would be immensely cheaper than in the United States, for example South Korea
and Taiwan. With 86 percent of Nike s products being manufactured in one of the aforementioned
countries and Nike employing a large number of people who lived there, both countries shared in
the riches until the founder decided prices were too high to manufacture there anymore.
Global Market Leader: The footwear and sportswear industry causes constant demand for new
footwear technology around the world and no company has maintained a share in every major
market around the world, like Nike. Nike has the chance to go to countries like India, where the
economies and social statuses of people are changing and growing to allow for companies like
Nike to sell their products. Despite all of the opportunities Nike has in the industry, competition has
been strengthening and the market of fake goods has been growing within the past ten years.
Innovative Culture: The culture of inventing new things is a strong core competency for the Nike
brand. The things left for the future by such invention of new things in search of better, lighter,

Comparing The Creation And The Story Of Genesis And Genesis
In the sacred scripture of both the Bible or the Hebrew Tanakh, the first two chapters of Genesis
consist of both the Creation, and the story of Adam and Eve. Despite one story being ordained to
one and another. Both the Creation, and the story of Adam and Eve can be compared on both their
similarities, the way how both stories can connect, and finally by their differences on connecting
their stories. When the author was writing the first chapter of Genesis, the author emphasized
densely on the creation of the world and how he wanted to show the creation of the humanity. By
stating In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth (Genesis 1:1), later in the chapter,
the statement that was written in Genesis 1:1 would help transit to a new chapter in Genesis 2:4
which is the story of Adam and Eve. As Genesis 2:4 states This is the account of the heavens and
the earth when they were created, when the Lord God made heaven and the earth (Genesis 2:4),
the transition from Genesis 1:1 to Genesis 2:4 showed the similarity on how the chapter started,
by stating how God created the heaven and the earth on the first day, and how in Adam and Eve
the author stated how the world was created by the creator himself as stated from the Bible Study
Tool, None but the Creator himself could give this information, and therefore it is through faith
we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God (Hebrew 11:3, BST). However, in

C. Coherence
For a linear system, the coherence function is given as
Cxy (пЃ· k ) пЂЅ
Sxy (пЃ· k )
Sxx (пЃ· k ) Syy (пЃ· k )
(2)
where Sxy (П‰k) is the input output cross spectrum (i.e., the power spectrum of the cross
correlation between the input and output functions), and Sxx (П‰k) and Syy (П‰k) are the
power spectra of the autocorrelations of the input and output, respectively. The function C2xy
(П‰k) can be interpreted as the fraction of the mean square value of y(n) that can be attributed to
the component of the input x(n) at frequency П‰k . Usually, pseudorandom noise is used as an
input x(n). The two identification methods, direct and inverse, then estimate the system response

Matthew Brady Inherit The Wind
Inherit the Wind is a powerful play written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee that tells of
the significant battle of conventional, religious powers versus freedom and the growing reality of
Charles Darwin s theories. This play is not the exact encounter of the courtroom battle but rather a
dramatic retelling of one of the greatest courthouse showdowns in human history. Although many
think the religious Bible thumpers defending the Bible to be bias and inconsiderate in this play
and in the actual account, those accusers may now look back and see that those Bible beaters

was instead a lost soul searching for the truth. Mr. Cates needed love and help to find the truth,

have revealed to the world and Mr. Cates that he cared about the individual person and their
freedom but he was unwilling to let the false beliefs of Darwin be pushed upon the millions of
children in the nation of the United States grounded upon the authority of God. It was ok for
Brady to be all for the preservation of the Bible and Christianity but he should have seen reality
and respected other opinions, even if they were crazy and instead lovingly and truthfully reveal to
the confused their faults. While the battle was taking place in the courtroom two beliefs were
trying to find their way to the top. Matthew Brady tried to defend the Bible and keep peace,
comfort, and assurance readily available through God. Henrey Drummond tried to defend what he
thought to be freedom of speech but all the while was the Devil s attempt to put the inoculant
theories of evolution into the school

Abstract Behavioral Development Is A Crucial Part Of Human
Abstract Behavioral development is a crucial part of human development. It influences how people
interact with the atmosphere and others around them. Behavioral development is reliant on on
many environmental factors which include one s parents, siblings, peers, schooling and culture.
According to Jacqueline J. Goodnow, these parental factors are often dependent on the culture in
which the person was raised. The two parental factors that have a negative effect on a child s
behavioral and psychological development are the parents use of control and rejection. These
parenting styles can lead to a child internalizing and externalizing their problems. When a child

Another similarity these cultures share is the value in masking their feelings. For both cultures, the
masking of their feelings creates a non threatening, peaceful environment, but certain parenting
styles, found popular to these cultures, can lead to the internalization and externalization of
negative emotions for young children. Relations Between Parenting Styles and Temperament of a
Child Behavioral Coping Mechanisms Internalizing and externalizing behaviors have been related
to both parenting styles and child temperament (Zhou, et all, 2008). Externalizing behavior can be
displayed in forms of aggression, hyperactivity and rebellion. Internalizing behavior can be
displayed in the forms of anxiousness and depressive behavior (Liu, 2004). Both behavioral
problems manifest in the child s inward and outward behavior. There are negative life long
outcomes such as violence, depression, anxiety, etc. that are associated with children who practice
these behavioral coping mechanisms. Parenting Styles Psychologist Diana Braumrind theorized
that there are four patterns of parenting styles (Uninvolved, Permissive, Authoritarian and
Authoritative Parenting) based off of two concepts: control and warmth (Kopko, 2007). Unlike
Western cultures, who generally follow an Authoritative parenting style, most Japanese and Chinese
parents follow a more Authoritarian parenting

The Tower of London has always played a prominent role in the English s history. Controlling the
Tower has always been important to controlling the country because of it s position on the River
Thames. Because it is so important it has been besieged several times. There is also a group of
at least six ravens that reside in the Tower of London. The ravens in the tower are there due to a
popular superstition that if the Tower of London ravens are lost or fly away, the Crown will fall

The bird s flight feathers on one wing are clipped so that they cannot fly away. That same day

Reasons Behind the Failure of the Provisional Government...
Reasons Behind the Failure of the Provisional Government
The provisional government was brought about after the fall of the Tsarist government collapsed.
This was done purely because of lack of support for the Tsar and being the only major party. They
were in power for 8months and after making five serious errors; they were removed from power by
force. Kerensky ran the provisional government and it was his lack of judgement, just like the Tsars
stupidity and gullibility that let him down.
The first error he made was that he made no attempt to make the provisional government legitimate.
It never held a democratic election for fear of losing status. Even though at the start of their reign ...

This left an army that was majorly weakened and people thought that, like the Tsar he was a loser
of wars. The populations now have an even worse opinion of him and it was not good for his
popularity.
Kerensky underestimated the Bolshevik s and Lenin. Once he had fought off their uprising with
Lenin s plan of Peace for the Army, Bread for the Workers and Land for the Peasants , he thought
sending Lenin to exile was sufficient. After Lenin accepted that he had lost his chance to become
President, an uprising in Petrograd (Kornilov Affair a point I will go onto in my next paragraph)
means Kerensky has to rearm the Bolsheviks in order to retain order. This leaves other countries
and supporters of Lenin with a chance to send him back into the country and to try and push the
country into another revolution (bringing about communism ideally). Lenin s plan to try to please
as many people as possible could come back into effect and this time it had a substantially negative
effect on Kerensky s position in Russian parliament.
Continuing from my last point, Kerensky s lack of judgement about the Kornilov affair was a
definitive error of his. He thought that the Bolshevik s were attempting to take over Russia by means
of a coup, thus he asked Kornilov to send part of his army to protect him. When they got there,

Delight In The Iliad
According to what Edmund Burke demonstrated in his On the Sublime and the Beautiful, 1756,
two terminologies, delight and sublime , were defined. As declaring that the self preservation
would eventually lead to pain and danger, Edmund says that people are delightful when they have a
clear sense of the consequences of self preservation, but are not affected by them; meanwhile,
sublime excites the delight . By connecting these definitions to the Homeric Hymn, I view The Iliad
as the perfect match of Edmund s interpretations. Gods in the Iliad need human beings only
because their pain and suffering can fulfill god s selfish pursuing of delight and sublime . Gods
look for delight on personal wills by intervening or not involving, and multitudinous pains
originated from god s process of pursuing sublime .
Certain gods pursue delight by harming people on their personal wills. Apollo, the god of the
sun, has been a typical reflection of how selfish all gods deal with mortals in the Iliad. At the
beginning of the story, Apollo had already swept a fatal plague through the army men were dying
and all because Agamemnon spurned Apollo s priest (I 11 12). The entire cause of spreading the
plague was that the daughter of one of his priests was captured as spoil of winning a battle by
Agamemnon, the leader of Achaean army. By only defending his illusory reputation and the
feedback for his prayer, Apollo led Achaean innocents suffer from plagues. Gaining his own benefits

Deborah Tannen Women Are Unmarked
In the following, Deborah Tannen who is a Professor at Georgetown University says, that women
are marked and men are unmarked (130 135). This explains how women are being discriminated
as marked due to women s traits, and that men are unmarked because they do not have
discrimination traits. The term marked means it is a staple that relates to the way language is being
said. Women are marked in ways, such the appearance a womanhas and having certain titles.
Women are criticized each and everyday just by how they are dressed. For example, if a woman
wears a tight dress and heels, it sends out a message to men who believe that women are looking
for attention. However, if women wear nonsexual clothes that sends a message to her to think about
how she could be attractive. Tannen states, If her clothes are not sexy then that sends a message,
lent meaning by the knowledge that they could have been (133). This is saying that if women see
others dressed up, then it makes them think how they as an individual can be like the sexy women.

I carried this with me for decades. And then I decided to become a Warrior instead of a victim
statistic. I broke the cycle (Unknown). Child abuse is the harming of a child that causes extreme
injury, emotional instability, or even death. Neglect is a form of child abuse where a parent
does not provide the proper care that a child needs to successfully grow and develop. Child
molestation is another form of child abuse, and involves an adult or older adolescent using a child
for their own sexual pleasure. There are thousands of cases being reported every year. However,
we may never know the exact number of cases. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is indeed heinous to hear an innocent child cry out and that person continues to harm. All child
molesters, and abusers need to have severe punishments, and to be off of the street. Children who
get molested and/or abused, suffer from long term problems that include depression, and trouble
forming relationships. This tragic incident can also take years to get over, if not, haunt them for the
rest of their lives.
Today, convictions of child molestation can already be severe. This depends on the state.
According to Criminal Defense Lawyer (NOLO), in Georgia, a person accused of molesting a
child can have a sentence of 5 to 25 years for their first offense. Any other similar crimes
committed by the same criminal, can cause them to have a sentence of 10 years to life. The
penal code for any libidinous acts with a child 14 years of age and younger, in California,
includes a sentence of up to 8 years, for each felony count against that person. Every separate act
is its own felony charge. Also, any sexual intercourse with someone under the age of 10, will be
punished with a sentence of up to 25 years to years. In Ohio, any who rapes a child under the age
of 13 is to have time in prison, or a life sentence, even if the person did not know the child s
correct age. Child sexual abusers will also have to register themselves as a sex offender. This
includes, the person s name, and location. Anyone will be able to look this information up.

assumes that experiences of employment means the increase in wage whereas experience in part
time work is associated with less wages.
Some sociologists believe that a dual labour market exists and is divided into 2 sectors primary
and secondary. Primary is secure, well paid and with good prospectus whereas the secondary is
poor pay insecurity and no ladder of promotion. Barron and Norris concluded that women are
likely to be in the secondary this is due to women being unsuitable, disrupted career developments
and weak legal and political framework supporting women.
Liberal feminists argue that the traditional forms of gender role socialisation in families, education
and in the media are responsible for reproducing a sexual division in labour in which masculinity
is seen as dominant whereas femininity is seen as subordinate.Oakly argues that the reason for the
subordination of women in the labour market is the dominance of motherhood/housewife roles
for women. Patriarchal ideology stresses the view that women s only purpose is to raise children.
Sharpe believes that education and careers are main priorities of teen girls. Girls also perform
better in education which suggests that society will change at a later stage due to girls performing
so well

What Does Freedom In The Giver
Is it sensible to give up freedom for safety? Jonas community thinks it is. Elders took away
people s personal freedoms and liberties to make their town a utopia. The choice Jonas society
made wasn t sensible because people aren t able to choose their family, rules for the very old and
the very young are unfair, adults don t choose their job, and people shouldn t have safety before
freedom.
Jonas community doesn t have the choice of who they can live with and who s in their family. ... the
Matching of the Spouses and the Naming and Placement of new children... scrupulously thought
through by the Committee of Elders. (Lowry, 62) Adults don t get to choose their spouse, their
child, and the name for their child. If adults named their own children, Mother and Father would
feel a greater connection to them. Furthermore, adults don t choose who they can live with. After
The Giver gives a memory about Christmas to Jonas, Jonas experiences grandparents. In his
community, citizens don t get to know the parents of their parents. When I finish my training and
become a full adult, I ll be given my own dwelling. And when Lily does... she ll get her own
dwelling... Mother and Father... go and live with the other Childless Adults. And they won t be part

They shouldn t have to give up their personal freedoms to be safe. Benjamin Franklin said, He
who gives up freedom for safety deserves neither. Freedom is better to have than safety. Giving up
your freedom means you re resting your life into someone else s hands. Residents of the
Community do this every single day until they re released. Freedom is dangerous, but it provides
our safety, Harry Emerson stated. Jonas community thought people having their freedoms would
make the place too dangerous to live in. However, people s freedoms make sure they can do things
with a choice in mind. Since the citizens in Jonas community don t have freedom, they aren t

Communism In The Film Atomic Cafe
Apart from the fear and paranoia towards the Communist camp, Americans were also shocked by
the news of Communist spies and espionages within their own backyard. This not only led to
increased surveillance in the US but the environment also became rather hostile and surveillance
was very high. When the Soviet s obtained their own nuclear bombs, the threat of the nuclear bomb
and the advancement of Communismitself became blur. In the film Atomic CafГ©, archival footage
of U.S. Senator Owen Brewster reveals him saying that the Russians obtained the atom bomb, not
through independent research, but from America, from traitors within our own ranks, referring
specifically to alleged Communists. This instigated a new sense of fear and paranoia

Sippican Case Study Scm
1.Given some of the problems with Sippican s cost system, should executives abandon overhead
assignment to product entirely and adopt a contribution margin approach? Why or why not? The
overhead spending is greater than the direct labour costs or the direct material costs for all three
product lines Valves, Pumps and Flow Controllers (Exhibit 2). Overheads are simply charged at
185% constant for three diverse products. The fact that there is huge variance in the number of
units produced per production run it is 375 for valves and 18 for flow controllers per production
run. This shows the reason for high overheads costtoo. Hence it calls for checking the cost allocation
system of the company.
Since Sippican produces three ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
b)Overheads were first segregated into certain categories like Direct Indirect etc. The reason for
this were different costs and different activity on which they are based. Then the time taken for
each activity was computed and the costs were allocated based on that.
c)The method showed that the pricing that was being used for the three products were not
correct. The price at which the pumps were being sold was low were high whereas flow
controllers were low. Because of which the most profitable product was coming out to be flow
controllers whereas it was actually the least profitable.
4.Based on the revised costs and profitability estimates, what action should Sippican s management
team take to improve company s profitability?
Ans: a) Increase number of units per production run for flow controllers
Setup for the machine is done for one batch of items. If we look at the the batch size of valves, it
will be 375 units(=7500 units/ 20 production runs)

  • 4. Police Authority, Police Power and Police Use of Force Essay Abstract This paper will describe police power and police authority. I will also talk about police discretion as for as whom gets locked up and who is allowed to go free. This paper will discuss the different use of police force. In this paper I will also talk about police attitude, police misconduct, and physical abuse among police officers. Most people confuse police authority with police power. What are police authority and or police power? Souryal, (2007), stated, That Authority is the right to control the behavior of others within legally determined parameter. These include constitutional and professional limitations, which are designed to resolve conflicts in an orderly fashion. Authority stems from the practitioner s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The situation becomes more difficult when the practitioners feel threatened and stonewall the truth. They perjure themselves, destroy evidence, or cover up significant facts . It is often said that no one is above the law not even the police, although it seems that they appear to be at times. The United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights protect the people from police brutality. Police use of force is defined as the use of physical restraint by a police officer when dealing with a member of the public. Law enforcement officers are authorized to use the amount of force that is reasonable and necessary given the circumstances. Most officers are trained in the use of force and typically encounter numerous situations during their careers when the use of force is appropriate for example, when making some arrests, restraining unruly combatants, or controlling a disruptive demonstration. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To summarize, there have been times throughout journalistic history when deception and taking sides was acceptable, but objectivity and responsibility were largely considered to be professional standards as we entered the 21st century. Deontology and Utilitarianism Of the many methods for applying ethical theories to war reporting, I narrowed the choice down to Deontology and Utilitarianism as referenced in the introduction. Deontology involves applying a universal set of principles (Jordin 2009, p. 15) . . . which makes the duty or the obligations we owe other human beings the fundamental principle of ethics. Doing our duty is not based on a particular set of circumstances. Since acts are judged only by their consequences, the means justify the ends. Utilitarianism is defined by the consequences of actions, not the act s moral or intrinsic value.
  • 8. Jordin (2009, p. 17) states, Where deontological theories thus talk more in terms about what is right, consequentialist theories are more concerned with the good. Moral worth is determined by its ability to produce the most amount of good for the greatest number. Here, the ends justify the means. How can these two standards help answer our ethical dilemma? We can answer this question by examining a few cases from the current Iraq conflict and others. Ethical Dilemma: Should reporters ever leak and/or publish classified information in ... The Federal Reserve is a private entity that is not connected or governed by the United States. It came into existence in 1913 by the Federal Reserve act. Many people believed are still believe it is a part of our government. Sadly, they are greatly mistaken. It originated from Jekyll Island are very wealthy people gathered to create it for their own selfish and personal gain from which only they controlled. The founding fathers stated clearly in the Constitution that there should never be a central bank and that gold and silver should be legal tender. The Federal Reserve act single handedly broke this law with the issuance of paper currency. The main consensus would be that the American people would now be able to store their gold and silver or wealth safely inside these banks behind both doors for a small fee. In return they would be given paper notes correlating with the amount of gold or silver they deposited in the bank. If they were to spend these notes at a merchant s store the marching could then decide to go to the bank and deposit the notes for the equivalent in gold or silver. It was such a great system that other countries decided to trust it and store their gold in US banks. In return they also got US dollars. Seems like a pretty solid monetary system right? Well it was for a while, until certain people started to become greedy. The people with control and power took advantage of the system. Think ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Analysis Of The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fist Fight In Heaven Do you have issues with family members not being there for you? If so, you may be in a similar situation as victor from The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fight In Heaven by Sherman Alexie. Victor s father leaves their home and the reservation while victor is still young age leaving him to live with his motheron the reservation. In Native American cultures, storytelling has historically been used to convey morals, an understanding of life and death, and roles in society. Using the fictional character Victor, Alexie takes this tradition to a new audience in order documents his childhood struggles separation and distance from familyand how stories kept those who were absent with him. Family members can cause great deals of emotion when there is a separation. Victor s father leaves home without warning when victor is an adolescent. Even though there is still a meaningful bond between victor and his father as seen in the following quote, Come on back inside, she said. it s cold. No, I said. I know he s coming back tonight. (p, 35). By waiting for his father to come back Victor shows that there is a abound between them and that he is struggling with his absence. Unfortunately, his father did not return and Victor, while struggling with his father s abandonment, had to learn how to be a man on his own. A family member permanently leaving while hard, is not the same as them just not being there. Sometimes family members are absent or distracted from the family. One instance of this is when Victor s father buys a motorbike and disappears because he is using his bike so much. Victor s father didn t do much of anything except ride that bike and listen to music. (P, 32). By only riding his bike and listening to music he is leaving Victor to grow up on his own not having a proactive male role model in the immediate family. This can be harmful to anyone growing up because the role they show you is the role of being absent for the family. One positive is that it does give an example for you to try not to become when growing up. Sometimes we have to remember those who are not in the family as well. Remembering the family members not with us anymore can be just as important as them being with us actively. One ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Comparatively, the sponsorship scandal of the 90s 00s was plagued by a sovereignty movement and financial burdens that led to less than democratic processes and outcomes. In the wake of the 1995 Quebec referendum, the federal government responded with the Sponsorship Program which sponsored community projects and cultural events as well as advertising for national unity and federalism, especially within Quebec. This program was also a symbolic gesture in that despite a separatist movement looming, the rest of Canada, especially the government, are one with Quebec and have always had a presence in their province, in tune with Macdonald s vision of a united Canada. The separatist movement was a more significant issue than to Macdonald s dealings because as great a feat as confederation was, it produced no radical changes to life. While still in school at Stanford, the founder Phil Knight thought that instead of paying Americans to put together Nike s shoes, Knight believed that it would be best to take their manufacturing plants oversees, to places where the labor would be immensely cheaper than in the United States, for example South Korea and Taiwan. With 86 percent of Nike s products being manufactured in one of the aforementioned countries and Nike employing a large number of people who lived there, both countries shared in the riches until the founder decided prices were too high to manufacture there anymore. Comparing The Creation And The Story Of Genesis And Genesis In the sacred scripture of both the Bible or the Hebrew Tanakh, the first two chapters of Genesis consist of both the Creation, and the story of Adam and Eve. Despite one story being ordained to one and another. Both the Creation, and the story of Adam and Eve can be compared on both their similarities, the way how both stories can connect, and finally by their differences on connecting their stories. When the author was writing the first chapter of Genesis, the author emphasized densely on the creation of the world and how he wanted to show the creation of the humanity. By stating In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth (Genesis 1:1), later in the chapter, the statement that was written in Genesis 1:1 would help transit to a new chapter in Genesis 2:4 which is the story of Adam and Eve. As Genesis 2:4 states This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the Lord God made heaven and the earth (Genesis 2:4), the transition from Genesis 1:1 to Genesis 2:4 showed the similarity on how the chapter started, by stating how God created the heaven and the earth on the first day, and how in Adam and Eve the author stated how the world was created by the creator himself as stated from the Bible Study Tool, None but the Creator himself could give this information, and therefore it is through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God (Hebrew 11:3, BST). It influences how people interact with the atmosphere and others around them. Behavioral development is reliant on on many environmental factors which include one s parents, siblings, peers, schooling and culture. According to Jacqueline J. Goodnow, these parental factors are often dependent on the culture in which the person was raised. The two parental factors that have a negative effect on a child s behavioral and psychological development are the parents use of control and rejection. For both cultures, the masking of their feelings creates a non threatening, peaceful environment, but certain parenting styles, found popular to these cultures, can lead to the internalization and externalization of negative emotions for young children. Relations Between Parenting Styles and Temperament of a Child Behavioral Coping Mechanisms Internalizing and externalizing behaviors have been related to both parenting styles and child temperament (Zhou, et all, 2008). Externalizing behavior can be displayed in forms of aggression, hyperactivity and rebellion. Internalizing behavior can be displayed in the forms of anxiousness and depressive behavior (Liu, 2004). Both behavioral problems manifest in the child s inward and outward behavior. There are negative life long outcomes such as violence, depression, anxiety, etc. that are associated with children who practice these behavioral coping mechanisms. Parenting Styles Psychologist Diana Braumrind theorized that there are four patterns of parenting styles (Uninvolved, Permissive, Authoritarian and Authoritative Parenting) based off of two concepts: control and warmth (Kopko, 2007). This was done purely because of lack of support for the Tsar and being the only major party. Kerensky ran the provisional government and it was his lack of judgement, just like the Tsars stupidity and gullibility that let him down. After Lenin accepted that he had lost his chance to become President, an uprising in Petrograd (Kornilov Affair a point I will go onto in my next paragraph) means Kerensky has to rearm the Bolsheviks in order to retain order. This leaves other countries and supporters of Lenin with a chance to send him back into the country and to try and push the country into another revolution (bringing about communism ideally). Lenin s plan to try to please as many people as possible could come back into effect and this time it had a substantially negative effect on Kerensky s position in Russian parliament. Continuing from my last point, Kerensky s lack of judgement about the Kornilov affair was a definitive error of his. • 39. Delight In The Iliad According to what Edmund Burke demonstrated in his On the Sublime and the Beautiful, 1756, two terminologies, delight and sublime , were defined. As declaring that the self preservation would eventually lead to pain and danger, Edmund says that people are delightful when they have a clear sense of the consequences of self preservation, but are not affected by them; meanwhile, sublime excites the delight . By connecting these definitions to the Homeric Hymn, I view The Iliad as the perfect match of Edmund s interpretations. Gods in the Iliad need human beings only because their pain and suffering can fulfill god s selfish pursuing of delight and sublime . Gods look for delight on personal wills by intervening or not involving, and multitudinous pains originated from god s process of pursuing sublime . Certain gods pursue delight by harming people on their personal wills. Apollo, the god of the sun, has been a typical reflection of how selfish all gods deal with mortals in the Iliad.
