As stated in an article called UAE consumers spending more on electronics from Gulfnews.com
(April 21, 2014) the amount of spendings on electronics in UAE has seen a significant increase
from Dh3000 last year up to Dh4875 today. This data was presented by one of the major UAE
electronics retailers, Plug Ins Electronix, after surveying around 2000 people online. 94% of the
people that took part in the research stated that they made an electronics purchase during the year.
The majority of the purchases were smartphones, leading with 66%, then televisions and tablets
with 40% each and laptops with 38%. A survey conducted by Cisco s Middle East also showed that
smartphones are the most desired devices among the 18 to 34 years of age... Show more content on

In economics the demand of any good is the amount of the good that buyers are willing and able
to purchase (Mankiw, 2012). When considering the demand of smartphones there are several
determining factors that correspond with it. One of the key factors is income. As smartphones are
normal, or even luxury goods, then there is a positive correlation between consumers income and
the demand for the product. In other words, when consumers income rises the demand increases;
when income falls, the same happens with the demand for the product. Employment is rising and
wages are starting to trend upwards (The National, 2014) this fact results in a right shift of the
demand curve of smartphone market on the whole as it shows in Figure 1 below, where D
represents the initial demand and D is the demand after increase of income. If we take into
consideration certain brands, for example Samsung and Apple that were mentioned earlier, not only
income but also such factor as price of a substitute good arises. There are no particular substitutes
for smartphones in general, but the smartphones themselves play a substitutive role inside the
market. If the income of the customers is high, then they can afford themselves to purchase rather
expensive phones, iPhones or high priced models of Samsung for instance. People with lower
income that will to buy a smartphone can allow buying low priced ones. According to law of

The Pros And Cons Of The Woolly Mammoth
Biology Issues Investigations: Should we bring back the woolly mammoth from extinction? Or
should we not tamper with the past and leave things how they are?
Why do humans go to such extents to protect endangered species? The same questioning applies to
species brought back from extinction; it is to preserve biodiversity, to restore deserted and
destroyed ecosystems, to advance the science of preventing extinctions, and to undo harm that
humans have caused in the past.
Additionally, the prospect of resurrection is profound news. That something as irreversible and final
as extinction might be reversed is an astonishing realization. The imagination spirals does it not?
Just the thought of mammoths wandering the alive the wilderness again invokes the awe and
wonder that drives all conservation at its deepest level.
Woolly Mammoths were the dominant herbivore of the mammoth steppe in the far north, once the
largest biomes on Earth. In their absence, the grasslands they helped sustain were replaced by
species poor tundra and boreal forest. Their return to the north would bring back carbon fixing grass
and reduce greenhouse gas releasing tundra, which would be an extremely helpful and positive
environmental impact. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Should we be tampering with the past, trying to atone for some of the errors humanity made so
long ago. Scientist believes that even if a species is physically extinct, there is still a biological
existence lurking in fossils and other materialised objects belong to species. Even some that could
possibly be awoken from their 200,000 year long slumber. Is this ethically okay? Is this breaking
the bonds of death that this species was potentially longing for? Were they meant to go

Cacstromethorphan Case Studies
1.Dextromethorphan is believed to have rapid acting antidepressant properties at high dosage
because it s similar to glutamate NMDA receptor antagonist ketamine, which has shown rapid
(within hours after administration) antidepressant effects. However, ketamine has adverse effects
and a high potential to be abused [16].
2.C. Previous Studies and case reports of with Dextromethorphan/Rationale of Study
Currently, numerous studies are examining the use of Dextromethorphan in the treatment of
neurological and psychiatric disorders because of its profile and diverse pharmacokinetic and
pharmacologic actions in the central nervous system. Several preclinical, open label and blinded
clinical trials have shown the clinical and beneficial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

A case report showed Dextromethorphan was effective in a middle aged man with Major
Depressive Disorder. A 51 year old Caucasian male with DSM V Major Depressive Disorder,
recurrent, severe, non psychotic and Generalized Anxiety Disorder was treated with 600 mg/day of
CYP2D6 inhibitor bupropion XL (a common antidepressant drug) and a 60 mg BID oral dose of
Dextromethorphan. The patient showed improvement in major depressive disorder without side
effects. This case study was the first to show the fast acting effect of Dextromethorphan in major
depressive disorder in humans. This adds to the building literature on the antidepressant effects
observed in Dextromethorphan. The report suggested the administration of other common
antidepressants with Dextromethorphan, such as lithium might prolong the duration of the rapid
antidepressant effect [19].
Although this case report illustrates that Dextromethorphan has rapid antidepressant effects in
humans, there are very few clinical trial on the effect of Dextromethorphan on major depressive
disorder. This clinical trial will be one of very few controlled evaluating the safety and efficacy of
Dextromethorphan in patients with major depressive disorder. Therefore, various assumptions will
be required to estimate sample size. This trial will focus on patient who have

Dreams Deferred Langston Hughes Analysis
In the poem Dreams Deferred by Langston Hughes, similes are used immensely throughout the
poem. He relates each simile back to the first line of the poem, What happens to a dream
deferred? Hughes scrutinizes the possible effects caused by a dream being deferred by his usage
of similes and a metaphor. The first simile Hughes writes is in line three, Does it dry up/like a
raisin in the sun. One may picture a grape, once succulent and full of life, now shriveled up and
lifeless. Hughes wants to create this image to prove that dreams get smaller over time, but they
never disappear. In line four, a second simile is used, Or fester like a sore . Readers automatically
think of an oozing sore when they read this line. Sores fester when

What Is My Personal Experience Essay
Everyone has been through a personal experience, whether it has changed their lives for better or
worse. These experiences can be eclectic events such as going out to explore the world or even
devastating events such as tragic accidents. My personal experience occurred a year ago during the
summer when I took a trip to visit San Francisco, Californiawith my family. This trip to San
Francisco was a thrilling adventure due to the city being very beautiful and breathtaking. During
my visit to the city I was able to take part in the beaches, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Six Flags.

My family and I were able to cross the famous bridge a few times in the car as we traveled a bit
around California. The view from the bridge was beautiful during the day and as well at night. It
was nice during the day to see the sun sparkling on the water as boats sailed by, but appealing
during nightfall because of the bright lights on the bridge. Also, the city lights around it brought
out the overall awe of the bridge. During one of our passing on the bridge, we were able to make
a quick stop at the top of the hill and take a few family pictures together with the bridge. My
brother would tease me every time anyone brings up our visit to the Golden Gate Bridge
because I was afraid to stand near the edge of the mountain to take our family photos since I
imagined I was going to slip and fall. Furthermore, as we traveled through the bridge I had
noticed telephone posts on either side of the bridge. These telephones were for the suicidal people
who thought it was time to end their lives. The telephones were used to connect those who were
suicidal to a counselor to help talk them out of committing such a tragedy. They may have helped
saved plenty lives. It has been known by many that the Golden Gate Bridge is one of the many

Procedure For each trial of the test there was a fixed point on the screen. Five hundred dots
appeared in an aperture five degrees (of visual angle) wide. The dots moved ten degrees per
second. The dots were either 45 cd/m^2 or 2.1 cd/m^2 (cd = candela, a measure of brightness),
and then moved with 100% coherence (all dots in the same direction) or 2% coherence (only
2% of the dots moved in the same direction). The design was a 2X2, luminance X coherence,
repeated measures factorial design. There were one hundred trail per condition with a total of
four hundred trials per subject. The EEG was processed with EEGLAB, using a filter of 0.3 45
Hz. Evoked response potentials were calculated from 500 to 1000 ms, the baseline was
corrected, and the current sources were computed by sLORETA. Results A paired samples t test
was used to test the hypothesis. The waveforms in figure 1 show that coherence did affect the N2
as predicted, with a larger N2 for Coh1 than Coh100. It also shows that P1 was not effected by
brightness, because there was no significant P1 peak. Brightness also effected N2 in both latency
and amplitude. The N2 was more significant for bright than it was for dim. The results counter what

Military Deployments Essay
What is deployment? Most people think that when someone deploys they think military. Most
families has or had a family member, friend who has joined the military and has deployed around
the world. First what is the definition of deployment? Deployment is the movement of an individual
or entire militaryunit to overseas location to accomplish a task or mission (Public Schools of
North Carolina). In this research paper many subjects will be addressed that most people do not
deal with in the amount that the military do like: legal matters, family issues, financial matters, and

A will tells the world how to distribute your estate, your money and possessions upon your
death. The will names an executor or personal representative who will distribute your estate. A
will can also be a personal representative how to dispose of the service members remains. If a
service member dies without a will their property will distributed according to state law. If the
service member has minor children, the state will make decisions about your children upon their
death if they die without a will. These decisions may or may not be in accordance with the
military members wishes. A power of attorney are legal documents where the person grants
someone else the legal authority to act on their behalf to Endorse or cash check in the person s
name, sell, register, transport, or purchase the person s vehicle, file the persons income tax records,
enter or vacate military housing for the service member, buy, sell or refinance that persons real

Jonelle Samai. Evelyn Cartright. Eng 210. John Steinbeck.
Jonelle Samai Evelyn Cartright Eng 210 John Steinbeck John Steinbeck was an American Nobel
Prize winner whose work was viewed by many as controversial. Growing up in Salinas Valley
California, Steinbeck enjoyed a comfortable life but opted to work with migrants on a farm.
Here, his interest in the socio economic aspects of life sparked, which later influenced his literary
perspective. As an outspoken democrat and advocate of blue collared America, his critics often
argue that his works are biased and reflect inaccurate depictions of white collar America. This
paper will examine three of Steinbeck s works and two criticisms of them to determine the extent of
which his political and socio economic experiences have influenced his writing.... Show more

This struggle also heavily influenced his writing perspective in novels like of mice and of men
and Tortilla Flat. Steinbeck, with inspiration from marine biologist Ed Ricketts, dug himself out
of the great depression rut and wrote his first recognizable piece, the Log from The Sea of
Cortez. In 1962, Steinbeck won the Nobel Prize for literature for his realistic and imaginative
writing, combining as it does sympathetic humor and keen social perception. The selection was
heavily criticized for Steinbeck s political stance with some even calling it a win by default. At
the end of his career, the famed author returned to New York and died of heart disease in 1968.
His work, however, lives on and even his memory in the California hall of fame. The first piece
that I will be analyzing is the critically acclaimed, In Dubious Battle. In the story, we meet a
young man named Jim Nolan whose family and dignity was ruined by the economic and social
system. with the scars of brutality and starvation deeply embedded in his heart, Jim becomes a
member of the Communist Party. As the story develops, Jim makes new friends who lack
objectivity and encourage him to put party before his own needs, morals and even aspirations. Jim
feels as though he belongs and becomes anxious to get into action with his new mentor, Mac, as

The uninsured patients of hypertension are less likely to report having hypertension because they
cannot afford to seek a healthcare provider and if they access the doctor then they were not able to
meet the drug prescription cost. This situation makes the uninsured patients to be more prone to
unawareness of their health condition. Despite the benefits that accompany the treatment of
hypertension, the overall cost of treatment is overwhelming. The cost of the treatment and the cost
of the pharmaceutical products needed are relatively high. Improving policies that encourage cost
effectiveness may improve treatment of these disorders. Additionally it may maintain equity as the
costs of medication and medication can be predetermined. Several measures may improve better
health to individuals. They include insuring with privately run and public medical insurance

Alan Turing s Impact On Modern Day World
Life of Imitation Father of Artificial Intelligence, inventor, Enigma breaker, war hero. The life
of mathematician Alan Turing is one of extreme feats and tragedy. Even from a young age,
Turing was misunderstood and unappreciated, and this became a common theme all the way to
his death at the young age of 41. Alan Turing envisions a digital world centuries ahead of his
time. Everything he did still has a major impact on our modern day world. Yet his impact is still
unrecognized. Alan Mathison Turing was born on June 23, 1912 in Maida Vale, London. Even
from a young age Turing showed signs of a genius, so his parents father Julius Mathison Turing
(1873 1947) and mother Ethel Sara Stoney (1881 1976) enrolled him to St. Michael s Starting
School at the age of six. His teachers noticed his intellect early on, but didn t necessarily appreciate
it. At the age of 13 he attended an independent school in Sherborne, Dorset. Unfortunately the first

production and consumption of sugar, the cultural impact it has had, as well as the focus into how
it has changed economic revolution. Sugarwas a high in demand, and dominating industry for
many reasons. It was a natural preservative that was edible, it was often used for decorative

desirable. It gave a new meaning to its usage and social gatherings. It is clear that tea, the tea

class settings. (Mintz, 142). Without the success of sugar, there would not have been the success of

what happen to herself but she cares for the well being of her siblings especially Nettie since Pa has

Problems Of The And Boundary Work
Problems of Demarcation and Boundary Work
One of the fundamental areas of study concerning professionals, including lawyers and scientists,
is that of professional boundaries (Lamont Molnar). Where are the bounds of the profession? Who
is included and who is excluded from the profession? One of the driving questions for scholars of
science has been the demarcation problem, that is determining what is and is not included in
science (Gieryn 1983). Historically, the social studies of science has divided between internal and
external approaches, which studied the construction of science from inside and outside the
professional boundaries of science respectively (Kuhn 1977). Thus externalism internalism debates
in the history and sociology of science formed the central dividing line of the field until late last
century (Shapin 1992). However, a contemporary consensus has emerged in science studies that
the demarcation problem is essentially irrelevant to the study of science. The demarcation
problem has been called a pseudo problem by those who argue that philosophically there is no
reason to believe that it is possible to define necessary and sufficient conditions to separate the
scientific from the non scientific. (Laudin 1983) Gieryn proposed that instead of considering
demarcation as a conceptual problem, the bounds of science should be reinterpreted as a practical
problem faced by scientists who have a professional need to distinguish their work from other

The Romantic Era was a literary movement that swept through virtually every country in the 18th
century that encompassed placing importance on the beauty of nature, passion of the imagination
and human emotions. The emphasis was on self expression and individual uniqueness whereas,
society should be driven by passionate emotions rather than strict confining rules and rituals. There
was a great interest in the mysteries of life, intuition and the pursuit of divine revelation whereas,
the spirit of God is present in all humans and animals. God made and loves all creatures great and

8p23 Chromosomal Deletion Case Study
Genetic Disorders and 8p23 Chromosomal Deletion
Abstract: The Deletion in the distal region of chromosome 8p23 is associated with major
manifestation of congenital heart defect, diaphragmatic defect, developmental delay, low muscle
tone, and behavioral difficulties. Haploinsufficincy of genes GATA4, SOX7, TNKS, MCPH1,

define the genotype and phenotype relationships associated with this unique chromosome
mutation, we review the complex arrangements of the genes located in the segment of chromosome

Numerical abnormalities, or aneuploidy, is when an individual is missing a chromosome or has
an extra chromosome. Monosomy is when there is only one chromosome present from a pair due
to nondisjunction at the second division of meiosis. The only known viable case of monosomy, is
Turner s syndrome, where an individual only have one sex chromosome . Trisomy are cases where
there are three of a particular chromosome when there should only be two present. Cases of an
additional chromosome are seen in both autosomal and sex chromosomes. Majority of cases are not
viable, however there are common types that do survive. The most notable cases are trisomy 21 and
Klinefelter syndrome. Trisomy 21 is a genetic disorder of chromosome 21 having three copies,
causing intellectual and physical growth delays. The four types of structural abnormalities are
chromosomal deletions, duplications, translocations, inversions, and rings. When chromosome
mutations are created, either through a mistake in cell division or by a mutagen, protein synthesis is
affected. The structural changes can produce a varying degree of developmental difficulties in an
individual, depending on which genes experiences the structural change. Chromosome changes are
often damaging to an individual causing developmental difficulties and in some cases death can be
an outcome. A deleted section of a chromosome can result in developmental delay, heart problems,
behavioral problems, delayed muscle development, and

Irony In The Plague Tales By Ann Benson
Sire, I am a Spaniard, and I bear no allegiance to France (Benson 304). In the book, The Plague
Tales by Ann Benson, the theme, sometimes deceiving can be good, develops throughout the novel.
Ann Benson supports the theme with the motif of deception by making the characters lie to save
themselves, making them lieto have more composure, and making them lie to seem like a better
person.
A motif in the novel that conveys the theme are characters lying to save themselves from getting
caught. One example of Alejandro lying to save himself from being caught is when he lies about
his religion. For example, the author states, Sire, I am a Spaniard, and I bear no allegiance to
France (304). This shows that Alejandro lies about his religion and ethnicity so he is not given
away. Lying also helps him keep his job as a physician. Benson also states, Alejandro claims he is

complaints about this anymore (319). By doing this, he is able to make the king believe him
and then he seems credible, also this seems to make him more powerful through the kingdom.
Alejandro is tested by the king to see if he is lying about Guy de Chauliac. Perhaps he tests me,
Alejandro thought, to see if I will speak truthfully (296). This makes the king believe him more
and by him being trustworthy, he is able to keep his job for the king. In general, Alejandro seems
to lie to seem like a good and better person. Lying helps him and relates to the theme that lying can

Economic Development And Economic Growth
Economic development has the potential to transform regions as it creates an enabling environment
for economic growth. Economic development is also associated with expanding the capacity of
individuals and communities to maximize the use of their available resources. The extent of
economic growth depends on the type of the additional products that the economyproduces from its
investment projects. It has been an instrumental aspect in the growth of Cincinnati. Cincinnati is
comprised of a diverse and thriving business ecosystem. Economic developmenthas been essential
in ensuring that Cincinnati has a prosperous economic future. It has urbanized at a much more
rapid pace than most other states. The Uptown area of Cincinnati is one of the most vibrant areas of
the city, including the neighborhoods of Mt. Auburn, Avondale, Fairview, Clifton, Corryville and
Clifton Heights. Sectors, such as health care, have experienced steady growth trends to an extent
that they have become consistent contributors to the economic growth of Cincinnati community.
With one of the lowest costs of doing business in the U.S., Cincinnati has become a global business
center with more than 450 foreign based companies. Economic benefits have resulted from

upon the world as they did their own country, where people were expected to abide by. Jane Austen
illustrates the values of this prejudiced society through Pride and Prejudice, which involved the role
of women as a major, governing over their marriages for economic sustainability and their lack of
authority. Austen s controversial novel was adapted into a feature film which presented the real and
gritty society as how it truly was during the time of Regency... Show more content on

These values have driven the simple and traditional women of India to marry even without the
factor of love, as depicted in the transformation where Chandra Lamba (Charlotte s parallel)
manages to disappoint Lalita just as how Charlotte disappointed Elizabeth. While Lalita discusses
with Johnny Wickham (Lieutenant Wickham s counterpart) over Chandra s acceptance of Mr.
Kholi, Johnny comments that people do horrible things for money and a Green Card, too this
note is of course, ironic on Wickham s part as it was he who impregnated William Darcy s
younger sister, Georgina in order shame her family into marrying Georgina off to him to obtain
her inheritance. Nevertheless, Chandra once again portrays the women s desperate need to marry
in order to acquire a comfortable living in a country that offers more opportunities than one of
binding traditions. Chandra s predicament in Bride and Prejudice represents perfectly how the
morals and ethics of Regency England still affect parts of the world and have modelled their
principles from their own.
The fact that women rely so dearly on marriage demonstrates what little power they hold over their
own wellbeing and status. In Pride and Prejudice, circumstances have left it so that women held
absolutely no authority at all, as women, at the time, were simply

Tiananmen Research Paper
After few days later, October 1st will be China s 68th birthday. There are going to be a
magnificent celebration ceremony at Tian An Men square. In 1949, Chairman Mao boarded the
gate tower of Tiananmen and then announced to the world in his native mandarin that new China
was founded after the Chinese people won a peaceful and stable country after decades of fighting.
In the meantime, we have the awakening of our own consciousness and the struggle between
different ideologies of traditional culture. The martyr s resistance with all cost is to live with

I have a different opinion since it represents different symbols at different times. Over the past 100
years, Tiananmen square has been reshaped, reshaped and expanded. It reflects the political
changes of a country. In the beginning of the history, Tiananmen, which primitive name is
ChengTian Gate, was not only the main gate of the Qing and Ming dynasties, but also the
important place for the great celebrations and the national decree, and the majesty of the emperor.
On February 12, 1912, on the tiananmen gate, the emperor announced his decision to abdicate. In
May 1914, Beiyang government launched a plan to transform the old capital city. The first steps
was to remove thousand steps corridor so that tiananmen square could turn the enclosed palace
square into an open space for freedom of passage and sojourn. The original majesty and mysterious
imperial power were dissolved. Few years later, because of dissatisfaction with the Beiyang
government at the end of the first world war diplomatic failure on the Paris peace conference , on
May 4, 1919, thousands of students gathered near Tiananmen square, took out the slogan for

The Basics Of IT Infrastructure For Entrepreneurs
NOTES Introduction IT USE IN BUSINESS Information Technology is inseparable from business
operations and strategy. A survey conducted by the Small Business Administration in 2003 gives
the statistic that 75% of small businesses have heavily invested in computing technology. This is an
important and good trend, because the growth of IT has introduced methods and has facilitated the
implementation of new business models. The traditional view of IT is that it is an enabler of
efficient processing of routine operational activities and some specialized tasks have been
automated. This makes it possible for in entrepreneurs and Small to Medium Size business to gain
tremendous time efficiencies and reduce the need for specialized skills. This development has
allowed SME s streamline operations, improve productivity and enhance their customers experience
before and after sales. IT has permeated every aspect of the business enterprise from planning
strategy, to operations and implementation. The big question is how entrepreneurs align IT and

How far do you agree that world war one was mainly responsible for the 1917 revolution? World
war one was one of the main reasons for the breakout of revolution in 1917, however other
factors can be brought about to suggest that it wasn t only the main reason for the breakout of
revolution in 1917. Aspects such as the decisions and actions of Tsar Nicholas can also be
identified as important features for the breakout of revolution alongside the social and economic
strains and the lack of political reform. All factors have characteristics to suggest that they were
the main reason for the breakout of war, however the impact of world war one can be viewed as

was taken in aid of these inconveniences. Before the war Moscow had been receiving 2200
railway wagons of grain per month in 1914; however by Christmas 1916 this reduced to only
300. This therefore resulted in the accumulative discontent of the Russian people which only
made matters worse for the Tsar as the likely hood of the occurrence of revolution was high. The
lack of political reform can accountably be taken in as one of the main reasons for the outbreak
of revolution in 1917. The union of zemstva provided medical facilities for the army; however
the government did not know how to incorporate them into its own war effort. Moreover, the
progressive Bloc called for a government of public confidence in which the ministers would be
responsible for the Duma. However, Tsar Nicholas refused to listen to any of their demands, this
resulted in the ministers who campaigned for change and reform; were either dismissed or
resigned. Due to the fact that no reform was made, all the blame was directed to the Nicholas.
Reform was needed greatly at this time yet no reform occurred, this accumulated the ever rising
dissatisfaction of the Russian people. Furthermore, as a result of Nicholas s lack of political reform

British Petroleum As A Company
Intro and Background
British Petroleum as a company was founded in 1954, however its roots go back another half
century. British geologists discovered oil underneath Iran in 1908 and by 1909 the Anglo
Persian Oil Company (APOC) began drilling for the British government. APOC benefited from
World War I as it was predicted all British naval ships will soon be converted from coal to oil and
the company could spread further into Europe. Refineries were built in Whales, Scotland and were
bought in France and Australia. In 1935, APOC was officially changed to Anglo Iranian Oil
Company (AIOC) due to Persia being referred to as Iran.
World War II gave rise to nationalism inside the Arab countries including Iran. The Iranian
government in 1951 obtained control of the Iranian oil industry forming the National Iranian Oil
Company and consequently pushing out the AIOC. The American and British governments worked
to over throw the Iranian government in 1953 to regain control of oil in Iran. AIOC became the
British Petroleum Company (BP) in 1954 after a holding company Iranian Oil Participants (IOP)
brought Iranian oil back to the western market. BP expanded into Canada, Libya and the United
States by buying out existing companies and was the first oil company to strike oil in the North Sea.
Known for its risky business ventures, BP quickly became the world s third largest oil company
by acquiring other oil companies such as the Standard Oil of Ohio and Amoco. The company s rapid

Key Elements Of Classical And Operant Conditioning
Behaviourist Theories
This essay examines behaviourist theories and discusses key elements of classical and operant
conditioning. It considers a variety of psychological theorists and profoundly explores their
research.
Behaviourism is a psychological approach that explains human development as learning from
experience rather than a result of inborn tendencies or higher order thinking. (Moonie, 2006) The
behaviourist movement began in 1913 when Watson wrote the article Psychology as the
behaviourist views it. Additionally, Pavlov, Thorndike and Skinner worked to develop behavioural
theories of learning. They suggest that all behaviour is learned either through classical or operant
conditioning. (Cardwell and Flanagan, 2012, p.50)
Thorndike s research offered valuable insights into conditioning. He studied the way animals learn
through trial and error by observing their responses in controlled conditions. For example, a
hungry cat would experiment with methods of escaping from a cage to receive a reward of food.
When the cat discovered actions that helped it escape, it would remember them. Thorndike believed
any action that produced a good effect would be imprinted in an animal s mind. In 1898, Thorndike
wrote the article, the Law of Effect which elucidated how consequences govern actions. He
presented the idea that animals and humans learn to repeat actions that provide positive effects and
avoid actions which have negative outcomes. Consequently, his theory provided

To fulfill this study, the numbers of theories are reviewed to guide the study. Theories are vital to
the study because they provide starting point for testing concepts and also provide framework to
review the study. The following theories are reviewed to assists the study: Ability to pay theory,
Deterrence theory, Theory of equal sacrifice, rational expectation theory, Benefits theory of taxation
and optimal tax theory. These theories are discussed here under;
Ability to pay theory
The theory of ability to pay has good and honest sound, which is reasonable and appealing in its
context. (Kendrick, 1939) Taxes have economic effects, and these effects entail social
consequences. The ability to pay was first articulated by John Stuart Mill in 1848. Many
economists tried on how to model ability to pay tax policy, with primary focus on the rate
structures, in utilitarian terms. The most tax rates in tax brackets remains differences in ability to
pay, focusing on the portion of earnings sacrificed by taxpayers. The ability to pay theory deals
with human paradigm to provision of arguably intended to deal with differences in ability to pay.
(Seto Buhai, 2006)
Individual income tax if were to be reframed depending on ability to pay, the mechanical
complexities of that system could be rationalized and significantly reduced. The introduction of

The House Of The Spirits By Isabel Allende
Isabel Allende was born on August 2, 1942 in Lima, Peru. Her father, TomГ
Ўs Allende, was first
cousin of Salvador Allende, President of Chile from 1970 to 1973. She is a Chilean American
writer whose works contain mostly magic realism, which incorporates fantastic or mythical
elements into otherwise realistic fiction. Allende has been called the world s most widely read
Spanish language author . She uses experiences from her Chilean childhood and the political
situation in Chile to write her most famous book, The House of the Spirits.
Isabel Allende had many family difficulties that altogether resulted in her being one of the most
successful female writers in history. Allende was born to TomГЎs and Francisca who divorced
when Isabel was three. (McCann). As a result of the divorce, Francisca and Isabel moved to
Santiago to her grandparents house where she spent her childhood. Her grandmother s interest in
fortune telling and astrology (the study of the influence of the stars on human behavior), as well as
the stories she told, made a lasting impression on Allende. (McCann). This impression influenced
Isabel to start reading and writing. Following the months after her uncle Salvador Allende s
assassination, Isabel realized it was getting exceedingly dangerous for her family to live in Chile.
Therefore, Isabel fled to Venezuela along with her husband and kids in 1973. (McCann) After

Tuscarora Vs Morrison Formation Essay
Both the Tuscarora and Morrison formations have similarities. At the same time, they both are
composed of unique materials that is what set them apart and thus the reason I say they have
differences. Obvious differences will include that the Tuscarora is known as an eastern
sandstone, while the Morrison is a western sandstone. More obscured differences can be like
what ages they are in. The Tuscarora formation is in the Silurian age, located in Pennsylvania,
mostly composed of quartzite, and is secondarily composed of sandstone. Its thickness is 150 200
feet and is in the lower part of the Silurian age. The Tuscarora formation is in the Clinton group.
One member would be Castanea located at the top of the Tuscarora Formation. The depositional

some sort of marine geographical region. The Morrison formation generally has high porosity
and permeability due to bigger gaps in the sandstone and mudstone. The Morrison formation also
includes lots of fossils. Generally speaking, both the Morrison formation and Tuscarora
formation are similar because of where they are deposited and they both have fossils in them
which is valuable for paleontologists. Huge differences would be whether one was made of
porous and permeable material and the other was not which makes an even bigger difference in

conditions in Native reserves and communities (LaDuke, Par 1). The use of social media such as
Facebook and Twitter have helped the movement to spread their message more efficiently because
communities such as Attawapiskat and Kashachewan are remote communities that have received
very little attention due to lack of information (LaDuke, Par 28). In the article, Idle No More: what
do we want and where are we headed?, one of the organizers and spokespersons of the movement

Since the historic journey into outer space by Yuri Gagarin, manned spaceflight and space
exploration have generated and motivated astounding inventions and innovations. These discoveries
and developments affect every single person on Earth, and have improved a wide range of fields
including health, food, technology, entertainment, automobile, dental, medical, safety, sports, and

a heart transplant is available. It works by pumping blood throughout the body to keep patients
alive until a heart is available. David Saucier, a NASA engineer and rocket engine fuel pump expert,

used in the space shuttle s main engine pumps.
Another of these great technological advances is the LifeShear Pyrotechnic Cutter. The LifeShear

Television Dbq
Effects of Television on Coverage People say television has increased people s awareness of
politics to make elections more fair and accessible. However, I think TV has had a negative impact
because it promotes a superficial image and provides content that will give the TV station good
ratings.
Television promotes the candidates image over their policies. Instead of the candidates discussing
what they are going to do for the country, they simply argue why they are better than each other.
The candidates being televised gives the audience a sense of knowing them, which causes them to
no longer feel the need for party guidance (Source B). In other words, the audience no longer feels
the need of the politician s policies due to basing their judgments on the superficial characteristics.
In a recent political debate, candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton argued that their images
weren t very presidential. It started off with Trump saying Clinton didn t have the looks and the
stigma of a president and she quickly fired back that Trump didn t have the temperament. Instead of
discussing how they were going to run the country they just bickered about appearance. The ...

television stations to gain back viewers and ratings, the stations dumbed down the issues by forcing

and more about arguing over pointless things and ratings. However this has furthermore decreased
the interest in politics. Even the stations that dumb down content are failing, more often than not,

completely. In this scene, Kisa s mother is shown to be on the brink of rejecting Kisa. Tohru is
able to comfort Kisa enough for her to transform back into a human, and it is decided that it would

The Clay Marble By Minfong Ho
Written by Minfong Ho, The Clay Marble introduces a relatively new topic to today s teenagers
the lives of Cambodia during wartime in the 1970s. In 154 pages and eighteen chapters, The Clay
Marble follows the life of the protagonist, Dara, a twelve year old Cambodian girl, seeking a home
for the remnants of familyduring Cambodian s civil war. The novel is historical fiction, presenting
the story of Dara in her own first person perspective.
Summary
With a war going on between the Khmer Rouge and Vietnamese government, the supposedly safest
and richest (with food/supply) and populated place was Nong Chan, a refugee camp on the
Thailand border. That was the destination of Dara, her mother, and her brother, Sarun coming from
a village known ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At first, Dara heavily relied on Jantu s magic clay marble, needing its magic, its luck, and a lot
more values that are not muscles. Back then, it was reasonable Dara didn t make anything back
then, because back then, Dara only had remnants of confidence in herself. As the novel goes on,
Dara learns to become more and more confident within herself.
The Clay Marble, although short and sweet, introduced me to Asian life in Cambodia during its
civil war. In chapter seven of the book, I could make a connection between the Cherokee s Trail
of Tears and the long grueling walk the many refugee families had to take to reach safety. The
Cherokees were walking away from the harsh greedy whites, while the refugees were walking
away from the nearing fighting of the civil war.
I really appreciate Dara and Jantu s view on life. In the novel, when Dara was persuading Sarun
to quit being a soldier at the end, she made wonderful arguments. The most memorable argument
was when Dara said that it took more courage to stay peaceful in their own village, rather than to
fight in war, which was nothing else than a game of destroying and breaking. I never thought of
bravery that kind of way, and I am glad Minfong Ho introduced me to this new concept through her

Risk Factors Of Cerebrovascular Stroke And Its Recurrence...
Risk factors of Cerebrovascular Stroke and its recurrence:
According to (Stroke Association, 2015 and WHO, 2016), the risk of recurrent CVS is up to
fifteen times more than the risk of CVS and is concerned with insufficient control of risk factors
and non adherence to medical advice. So that, identification of risk factors of recurrence is an
important role of the critical care nurses, plays a crucial role in further stroke recurrent prevention.
The risk factors for stroke recurrence divided into two types:
A.Non modifiable risk factors: individuals may not do anything to alter their stroke risk profile.
1 Age and Gender::
Stroke risk increases with age, doubling each decade after 55 years of age. Two third strokes
occur in individual older than sixty five years, but stroke, recurrent can occur at any age.
Advanced of age increase liability to chronic disease, and respectively higher rate of stroke
progression or its recurrence (Linton, 2015 and Grotta, et al. 2016). Regarding gender, strokes are
more common in men for occurrence and recurrence, due to increase liability for stressors either
physiological or psychological exposure (Hinkle Cheever, 2013 and Lewis, et al. 2015).
2 Ethnicity and Genetic or family history:
African Americans have a higher incidence of recurrent cerebrovascular stroke and higher death
rate from CVS than white people. In additional, black people are twice as likely to loss of life from
CVS and higher incidence of recurrence (Lewis, et al.

Identify The Different Types Of Drivers Essay
When traversing highways and interstates, people run into many different types of drivers.
Those operating vehicles all fall into a certain category. Drivers, though more than likely not self
aware, have a very specific way of driving that allows them to fall into such a category; however,
drivers typically do not have a problem calling out other drivers on their faults. It would almost
seem that a long trip or even a quick run anywhere is really just a never ending sequence of
blaring horns and screeching halts in contempt for drivers outside of one s own classification.
Vehicle operators will either drive carelessly, dangerously, or carefully. Drivers can be classified
into three categories: The DJ, Daredevils, and Goody Two Shoes. The first type of driver falls
into the careless category, also known as the DJ. DJs tend to blare music at deafening decibels. To
maximize their disturbance, DJs also typically drive with all windows rolled down including the
sunroof. If the carsimmediately surrounding them are not shaking along to the beat DJs are
unsatisfied. DJs are also really good at multitasking. Rather than their main focus being on the road
or the surroundings, DJs attention is on whatever handheld device they re selecting music from.
Most of the time they come out alive. DJs are also skilled... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

They all fall into at least one category, but can sometimes identify with two or even all three.
Vehicle operators are not generally aware of their own classification, but can more often than not
identify the category that other drivers fall into. This identification is usually pointed out through
the rage empowered shouts of neighboring drivers. These categories also present a sort of hate
triangle. The three types do not often coexist peacefully, but on rare occasions you can find them
driving in harmony. Drivers can be classified into three categories: The DJ, Daredevils, and Goody

Inherit The Waterfront Movie
During the 1950 s, communism was a big issue in countries around the world. It was a different
ideology that was usually run by a dictator, who would run the country very poorly and punish
anyone who would stand in their way. This new ideology, challenged the principles of democracy
so the Western hemisphere retaliated, banned the ideology and would persecute anyone who would
believe in or be associated with it. Soon enough, people began to notice that communismwas
brought up quite frequently in Holly wood. The government began to crack down by starting the
communist blacklisting s. The blacklisting s were eradicating anyone who was involved in
communism from the film industry. This became a very frequent topic in the world, and soon

McCarthyism, gave America an exaggerated look at how communism is very popular in America
and everyone involved should be persecuted. This gave mass hysteria when it came to communism
and a lot of grief that did not need to happen. Communism was an issue in the Cold War but it was
very far off from taking over America or affecting it and no one seemed to understand that. The
government was also very worried about this because of other European countries who had
revolutions and have become full communist countries from it. Overall the Red Scare was a lot
of confusion between authorities that caused a lot of damage to many entertainers careers in
Hollywood and is known as a period of confusion and exaggeration. The estimate for the amount
of communists was 0.01 percent of the population and one journalist said, The whole lot were
about as dangerous as a flea on an elephant. People began to notice that this wasn t as bad as it
seems and soon enough the crisis in America died down and people became more focused in the

Economic Impact On Germany
The impact of the Great Depression in Germany was significant because it affected virtually
every section of German society, and was significant both in the short and long term. The Great
Depression was caused by the Wall Street Crash in the USA in October 1929. Germany was
disproportionately affected compared to other European countries, as Foreign Minister Stresemann
had secured loans worth millions of dollars from American banks in order to boost its economy in
the 1920s, and it had an impact on Germany economically, socially and politically in the 1930s.
The significance of this impact can be measured by examining the sections of society impacted, the
number of people impacted and the duration. The economic impact was the first to be felt and also
affected the majority of Germans, along with the social impact. However, it was the resulting
political impact that would have a much greater and long lasting effect on Germany and its
population. Therefore, it was overall the most significant outcome. The impact of the Great
Depressionin Germany was significant because the volume and nature of foreign trade was greatly
affected. This is shown partly by the significant decline in exports; in 1928 Germany exported
ВЈ630m worth of goods, but by 1932 that figure had fallen to just ВЈ280m. Imports also saw a
drastic fall, as the German government wanted as many products as possible to be produced within
the country to protect the economy during the Great Depression. In 1928,

The Literacy Education Is Not A New Issue
There is a prevalence of underprepared students entering postsecondary education. The College
Board (2013) reports as many as 57% of students completing the SAT exams did not meet the
benchmark for college level coursework; this figure may present low, as it does not necessarily
include the countless students who do not attempt the test, as they are planning on attending
postsecondary schools not requiring these scores for admissions or not planning on continuing their
educationafter high school. Individuals might point fingers at secondary education and blame them
for not preparing the collegefreshman adequately, but unfortunately, there are a myriad of
influences that generate this educational skills gap.

The opportunity exists to place the liability of underprepared students on secondary education;
concentrating on a flurry of mitigating factors existing within secondary education. Learners may
arrive underprepared because they had not planned to attend a postsecondary school; possibly, a
high school college track was not studied. Students may have originated from underprivileged
school districts and communities, and may not have had the advantages of solid school budgets,
staff, or technology. First generation students may also prove to be underprepared, as they exhibit
uncertainty as to what is required for college preparation. Inappropriate high school promotion or
an academic skill gap demonstrates another pool of students presenting as underprepared.
Subsequently, students may have suffered a delay between initial knowledge acquirement and
postsecondary enrollment; recognized when a required high school course may have concluded in
the junior year with over a year break in preparation. Realistically, there are numerous causes we
can attribute to students arriving on campus underprepared. The true motivation to designating
fault is to vitalize change; to design programs, at both the secondary and postsecondary levels, to
prepare students to be ready to learn and develop at a college level.
Scholarly caliber for high school graduation is affected by inappropriate grade inflation without
academic skill mastery. The Common Core State Standards Initiative

Atlantic Slave Trade
The origins of the Atlantic Slave Trade were products of Western Europe s expansion of power that
began at the beginning of the 1500 s through the 1900 s. The main contributing European countries
to the Atlantic Slave Trade were Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, France, and England. Portugal
lead the movement during the 1400 s and arrived in Western Africain hopes to find Christian allies
to spread Christianity against the Muslims of Northern Africa. But they soon became more
interested in trade (Hine, Hine Harrold, 2011). Slavery, however, has existed in all cultures for
thousands of years. For example, Arab merchants and West African Kings imported white European
slaves. At first, the slave trade focused on women and children who... Show more content on

Many times, especially during storms, the slavers neglected to feed the slaves or change the
tubs and buckets used for toilets, as well removing dead bodies (Hine, Hine Harrold, 2011).
Sanitation was also a major contributor to death and disease. Only about three or four toilet tubs
were provided for all of the slaves. Mortality rates were exceptionally high on the ships,
averaging around 15%. Overall, about one third of all slaves died during the whole process of
moving them from Africa to the Americas. The main causes of mortality on the ships were
diseases such as small pox, malaria, dysentery, yellow fever and measles (Hine, Hine Harrold,
2011).
There was however still rebellions from the captive slaves aboard the ships. Rebellions usually
occurred when the ship was getting ready to set sail or when they ships were still within sight of
the Africa land mass, when there was still hope for the slaves to return home. Often times slaves
would actually starve themselves intentionally or try to jump off the ship to drown. But to
combat this, the slavers would sometimes put nets on the side of the ship to stop jumpers and
to deal with those who would refuse to eat, the slavers would use hot coals to force individual s
mouths open to eat (Hine, Hine Harrold, 2011). The women aboard the slave ships were treated
very badly as well. They were often raped and sexually abused. Many times, all of the women were
kept in separate rooms to make it easier for

How the Airplane Changed War
In many ways World War II presents post Civil War American attitudes about technology and
science. Trace either the most relevant technology or scientific assumption from 1865 to 1945
showing how it changed or why it stayed the same from the Civil War for the end of World War II.

America has faced several major wars including the Civil War, World War Iand II. These wars have
cause great advances in technology and different techniques of fighting. The Civil War was based
on men fighting men with muskets and swords as the only fighting tool, this war cause over

Anthony Herman Fokker, a Dutch American engineer designed guns that would fire between
the spaces of the propeller. With a timer a plane became the first combat plane in 1915 before
that time planes were used for bombing and observations of troops. By the end of World War I
both sides had aircraft that was capable of flying to altitudes of 25,000 feet and speeds of 155
miles per hour. This was an amazing feat for wartime pressures for development. After the war
commercial air service was started and planes were being used for the transportation mail. The
United States Postal Service supported the development and Donald Douglas and Boeing started
production of planes for transportation of people and goods. In 1941 there were fewer than 300
planes in service when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. The United States had a very weak airforce.
Production had to be increased rapidly, by the end of the war aviation companies were making
almost 50,000 planes a year. The jet engine and pressurized cabin were developed which allowed
planes to fly higher and faster. America focused their attention on the development of fighters and
bombers. Aircraft allowed troops to be relocated to the front lines very quickly. Japan attacked
America at a very good time. We were battling out of a depression that caused the development
and production of the airplane to slow because of a lack of funding. Once the word of the

  • 2. As stated in an article called †UAE consumers spending... As stated in an article called UAE consumers spending more on electronics from Gulfnews.com (April 21, 2014) the amount of spendings on electronics in UAE has seen a significant increase from Dh3000 last year up to Dh4875 today. This data was presented by one of the major UAE electronics retailers, Plug Ins Electronix, after surveying around 2000 people online. 94% of the people that took part in the research stated that they made an electronics purchase during the year. The majority of the purchases were smartphones, leading with 66%, then televisions and tablets with 40% each and laptops with 38%. A survey conducted by Cisco s Middle East also showed that smartphones are the most desired devices among the 18 to 34 years of age... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In economics the demand of any good is the amount of the good that buyers are willing and able to purchase (Mankiw, 2012). When considering the demand of smartphones there are several determining factors that correspond with it. One of the key factors is income. As smartphones are normal, or even luxury goods, then there is a positive correlation between consumers income and the demand for the product. In other words, when consumers income rises the demand increases; when income falls, the same happens with the demand for the product. Employment is rising and wages are starting to trend upwards (The National, 2014) this fact results in a right shift of the demand curve of smartphone market on the whole as it shows in Figure 1 below, where D represents the initial demand and D is the demand after increase of income. If we take into consideration certain brands, for example Samsung and Apple that were mentioned earlier, not only income but also such factor as price of a substitute good arises. There are no particular substitutes for smartphones in general, but the smartphones themselves play a substitutive role inside the market. If the income of the customers is high, then they can afford themselves to purchase rather expensive phones, iPhones or high priced models of Samsung for instance. People with lower income that will to buy a smartphone can allow buying low priced ones. According to law of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Pros And Cons Of The Woolly Mammoth Biology Issues Investigations: Should we bring back the woolly mammoth from extinction? Or should we not tamper with the past and leave things how they are? Why do humans go to such extents to protect endangered species? The same questioning applies to species brought back from extinction; it is to preserve biodiversity, to restore deserted and destroyed ecosystems, to advance the science of preventing extinctions, and to undo harm that humans have caused in the past. Additionally, the prospect of resurrection is profound news. That something as irreversible and final as extinction might be reversed is an astonishing realization. The imagination spirals does it not? Just the thought of mammoths wandering the alive the wilderness again invokes the awe and wonder that drives all conservation at its deepest level. Woolly Mammoths were the dominant herbivore of the mammoth steppe in the far north, once the largest biomes on Earth. In their absence, the grasslands they helped sustain were replaced by species poor tundra and boreal forest. Their return to the north would bring back carbon fixing grass and reduce greenhouse gas releasing tundra, which would be an extremely helpful and positive environmental impact. ... Scientist believes that even if a species is physically extinct, there is still a biological existence lurking in fossils and other materialised objects belong to species. Even some that could possibly be awoken from their 200,000 year long slumber. Is this ethically okay? Is this breaking the bonds of death that this species was potentially longing for? Cacstromethorphan Case Studies 1.Dextromethorphan is believed to have rapid acting antidepressant properties at high dosage because it s similar to glutamate NMDA receptor antagonist ketamine, which has shown rapid (within hours after administration) antidepressant effects. However, ketamine has adverse effects and a high potential to be abused [16]. 2.C. Previous Studies and case reports of with Dextromethorphan/Rationale of Study Currently, numerous studies are examining the use of Dextromethorphan in the treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders because of its profile and diverse pharmacokinetic and pharmacologic actions in the central nervous system. [18] A case report showed Dextromethorphan was effective in a middle aged man with Major Depressive Disorder. A 51 year old Caucasian male with DSM V Major Depressive Disorder, recurrent, severe, non psychotic and Generalized Anxiety Disorder was treated with 600 mg/day of CYP2D6 inhibitor bupropion XL (a common antidepressant drug) and a 60 mg BID oral dose of Dextromethorphan. The patient showed improvement in major depressive disorder without side effects. This case study was the first to show the fast acting effect of Dextromethorphan in major depressive disorder in humans. This adds to the building literature on the antidepressant effects observed in Dextromethorphan. The report suggested the administration of other common antidepressants with Dextromethorphan, such as lithium might prolong the duration of the rapid antidepressant effect [19]. Although this case report illustrates that Dextromethorphan has rapid antidepressant effects in humans, there are very few clinical trial on the effect of Dextromethorphan on major depressive disorder. This clinical trial will be one of very few controlled evaluating the safety and efficacy of Dextromethorphan in patients with major depressive disorder. Therefore, various assumptions will be required to estimate sample size. This trial will focus on patient who have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Dreams Deferred Langston Hughes Analysis In the poem Dreams Deferred by Langston Hughes, similes are used immensely throughout the poem. He relates each simile back to the first line of the poem, What happens to a dream deferred? Hughes scrutinizes the possible effects caused by a dream being deferred by his usage of similes and a metaphor. The first simile Hughes writes is in line three, Does it dry up/like a raisin in the sun. One may picture a grape, once succulent and full of life, now shriveled up and lifeless. Hughes wants to create this image to prove that dreams get smaller over time, but they never disappear. In line four, a second simile is used, Or fester like a sore . These experiences can be eclectic events such as going out to explore the world or even devastating events such as tragic accidents. My personal experience occurred a year ago during the summer when I took a trip to visit San Francisco, Californiawith my family. This trip to San Francisco was a thrilling adventure due to the city being very beautiful and breathtaking. My family and I were able to cross the famous bridge a few times in the car as we traveled a bit around California. The view from the bridge was beautiful during the day and as well at night. It was nice during the day to see the sun sparkling on the water as boats sailed by, but appealing during nightfall because of the bright lights on the bridge. Also, the city lights around it brought out the overall awe of the bridge. During one of our passing on the bridge, we were able to make a quick stop at the top of the hill and take a few family pictures together with the bridge. My brother would tease me every time anyone brings up our visit to the Golden Gate Bridge because I was afraid to stand near the edge of the mountain to take our family photos since I imagined I was going to slip and fall. Furthermore, as we traveled through the bridge I had noticed telephone posts on either side of the bridge. These telephones were for the suicidal people who thought it was time to end their lives. The telephones were used to connect those who were suicidal to a counselor to help talk them out of committing such a tragedy. They may have helped saved plenty lives. Jonelle Samai Evelyn Cartright Eng 210 John Steinbeck John Steinbeck was an American Nobel Prize winner whose work was viewed by many as controversial. Growing up in Salinas Valley California, Steinbeck enjoyed a comfortable life but opted to work with migrants on a farm. Here, his interest in the socio economic aspects of life sparked, which later influenced his literary perspective. As an outspoken democrat and advocate of blue collared America, his critics often argue that his works are biased and reflect inaccurate depictions of white collar America. This paper will examine three of Steinbeck s works and two criticisms of them to determine the extent of which his political and socio economic experiences have influenced his writing.... Steinbeck, with inspiration from marine biologist Ed Ricketts, dug himself out of the great depression rut and wrote his first recognizable piece, the Log from The Sea of Cortez. In 1962, Steinbeck won the Nobel Prize for literature for his realistic and imaginative writing, combining as it does sympathetic humor and keen social perception. The selection was heavily criticized for Steinbeck s political stance with some even calling it a win by default. At the end of his career, the famed author returned to New York and died of heart disease in 1968. His work, however, lives on and even his memory in the California hall of fame. The first piece that I will be analyzing is the critically acclaimed, In Dubious Battle. In the story, we meet a young man named Jim Nolan whose family and dignity was ruined by the economic and social system. with the scars of brutality and starvation deeply embedded in his heart, Jim becomes a member of the Communist Party. As the story develops, Jim makes new friends who lack objectivity and encourage him to put party before his own needs, morals and even aspirations. The life of mathematician Alan Turing is one of extreme feats and tragedy. Even from a young age, Turing was misunderstood and unappreciated, and this became a common theme all the way to his death at the young age of 41. Alan Turing envisions a digital world centuries ahead of his time. Everything he did still has a major impact on our modern day world. Yet his impact is still unrecognized. Alan Mathison Turing was born on June 23, 1912 in Maida Vale, London. Even from a young age Turing showed signs of a genius, so his parents father Julius Mathison Turing (1873 1947) and mother Ethel Sara Stoney (1881 1976) enrolled him to St. Michael s Starting School at the age of six. It is an anthropological viewpoint into the production and consumption of sugar, the cultural impact it has had, as well as the focus into how it has changed economic revolution. Sugarwas a high in demand, and dominating industry for many reasons. It was a natural preservative that was edible, it was often used for decorative purposes and it was also believed to have had medicinal and magical properties. • 14. Problems Of The And Boundary Work Problems of Demarcation and Boundary Work One of the fundamental areas of study concerning professionals, including lawyers and scientists, is that of professional boundaries (Lamont Molnar). Where are the bounds of the profession? Who is included and who is excluded from the profession? One of the driving questions for scholars of science has been the demarcation problem, that is determining what is and is not included in science (Gieryn 1983). Historically, the social studies of science has divided between internal and external approaches, which studied the construction of science from inside and outside the professional boundaries of science respectively (Kuhn 1977). Thus externalism internalism debates in the history and sociology of science formed the central dividing line of the field until late last century (Shapin 1992). However, a contemporary consensus has emerged in science studies that the demarcation problem is essentially irrelevant to the study of science. The demarcation problem has been called a pseudo problem by those who argue that philosophically there is no reason to believe that it is possible to define necessary and sufficient conditions to separate the scientific from the non scientific. (Laudin 1983) Gieryn proposed that instead of considering demarcation as a conceptual problem, the bounds of science should be reinterpreted as a practical problem faced by scientists who have a professional need to distinguish their work from other intellectual ... There was a great interest in the mysteries of life, intuition and the pursuit of divine revelation whereas, the spirit of God is present in all humans and animals. Victor s consequences or punishment for defying the laws of nature and creating a monster was to become enslaved by the unnatural man and is forced to watch his loved ones be murdered one by one, while he remains powerless to stop the horrible events. The monster passionately seeks revenge against Victor for abandoning him when the world completely rejects him. The monster exclaims, I am alone, and miserable; man will not associate with me, but one as deformed and horrible as myself would not deny herself to me. Haploinsufficincy of genes GATA4, SOX7, TNKS, MCPH1, NEIL2, and ZFMPM2 have a strong correlation to the array of health complications. To better define the genotype and phenotype relationships associated with this unique chromosome mutation, we review the complex arrangements of the genes located in the segment of chromosome 8p23. Numerical abnormalities, or aneuploidy, is when an individual is missing a chromosome or has an extra chromosome. Monosomy is when there is only one chromosome present from a pair due to nondisjunction at the second division of meiosis. The only known viable case of monosomy, is Turner s syndrome, where an individual only have one sex chromosome . Trisomy are cases where there are three of a particular chromosome when there should only be two present. Cases of an additional chromosome are seen in both autosomal and sex chromosomes. Majority of cases are not viable, however there are common types that do survive. The most notable cases are trisomy 21 and Klinefelter syndrome. Trisomy 21 is a genetic disorder of chromosome 21 having three copies, causing intellectual and physical growth delays. The four types of structural abnormalities are chromosomal deletions, duplications, translocations, inversions, and rings. When chromosome mutations are created, either through a mistake in cell division or by a mutagen, protein synthesis is affected. The structural changes can produce a varying degree of developmental difficulties in an individual, depending on which genes experiences the structural change. Chromosome changes are often damaging to an individual causing developmental difficulties and in some cases death can be an outcome. In the book, The Plague Tales by Ann Benson, the theme, sometimes deceiving can be good, develops throughout the novel. Ann Benson supports the theme with the motif of deception by making the characters lie to save themselves, making them lieto have more composure, and making them lie to seem like a better person. A motif in the novel that conveys the theme are characters lying to save themselves from getting caught. One example of Alejandro lying to save himself from being caught is when he lies about his religion. For example, the author states, Sire, I am a Spaniard, and I bear no allegiance to France (304). This shows that Alejandro lies about his religion and ethnicity so he is not given away. Lying also helps him keep his job as a physician. Still, however changed, the values of today s society remain from the period of Regency England. Regency England, being the super power of the world in the 18th century, imposed the morals and ethics upon the world as they did their own country, where people were expected to abide by. Jane Austen illustrates the values of this prejudiced society through Pride and Prejudice, which involved the role of women as a major, governing over their marriages for economic sustainability and their lack of authority. British geologists discovered oil underneath Iran in 1908 and by 1909 the Anglo Persian Oil Company (APOC) began drilling for the British government. APOC benefited from World War I as it was predicted all British naval ships will soon be converted from coal to oil and the company could spread further into Europe. Refineries were built in Whales, Scotland and were bought in France and Australia. In 1935, APOC was officially changed to Anglo Iranian Oil Company (AIOC) due to Persia being referred to as Iran. World War II gave rise to nationalism inside the Arab countries including Iran. The Iranian government in 1951 obtained control of the Iranian oil industry forming the National Iranian Oil Company and consequently pushing out the AIOC. The American and British governments worked to over throw the Iranian government in 1953 to regain control of oil in Iran. AIOC became the British Petroleum Company (BP) in 1954 after a holding company Iranian Oil Participants (IOP) brought Iranian oil back to the western market. It considers a variety of psychological theorists and profoundly explores their research. Behaviourism is a psychological approach that explains human development as learning from experience rather than a result of inborn tendencies or higher order thinking. (Moonie, 2006) The behaviourist movement began in 1913 when Watson wrote the article Psychology as the behaviourist views it. Additionally, Pavlov, Thorndike and Skinner worked to develop behavioural theories of learning. They suggest that all behaviour is learned either through classical or operant conditioning. (Cardwell and Flanagan, 2012, p.50) Thorndike s research offered valuable insights into conditioning. He studied the way animals learn through trial and error by observing their responses in controlled conditions. For example, a hungry cat would experiment with methods of escaping from a cage to receive a reward of food. When the cat discovered actions that helped it escape, it would remember them. Thorndike believed any action that produced a good effect would be imprinted in an animal s mind. In 1898, Thorndike wrote the article, the Law of Effect which elucidated how consequences govern actions. He presented the idea that animals and humans learn to repeat actions that provide positive effects and avoid actions which have negative outcomes. Consequently, his theory provided ... However, I think TV has had a negative impact because it promotes a superficial image and provides content that will give the TV station good ratings. Television promotes the candidates image over their policies. Instead of the candidates discussing what they are going to do for the country, they simply argue why they are better than each other. In 154 pages and eighteen chapters, The Clay Marble follows the life of the protagonist, Dara, a twelve year old Cambodian girl, seeking a home for the remnants of familyduring Cambodian s civil war. The novel is historical fiction, presenting the story of Dara in her own first person perspective. Back then, it was reasonable Dara didn t make anything back then, because back then, Dara only had remnants of confidence in herself. As the novel goes on, Dara learns to become more and more confident within herself. The Clay Marble, although short and sweet, introduced me to Asian life in Cambodia during its civil war. In chapter seven of the book, I could make a connection between the Cherokee s Trail of Tears and the long grueling walk the many refugee families had to take to reach safety. The Cherokees were walking away from the harsh greedy whites, while the refugees were walking away from the nearing fighting of the civil war. I really appreciate Dara and Jantu s view on life. In the novel, when Dara was persuading Sarun to quit being a soldier at the end, she made wonderful arguments. The most memorable argument was when Dara said that it took more courage to stay peaceful in their own village, rather than to fight in war, which was nothing else than a game of destroying and breaking. • 42. Identify The Different Types Of Drivers Essay When traversing highways and interstates, people run into many different types of drivers. Those operating vehicles all fall into a certain category. Drivers, though more than likely not self aware, have a very specific way of driving that allows them to fall into such a category; however, drivers typically do not have a problem calling out other drivers on their faults. It would almost seem that a long trip or even a quick run anywhere is really just a never ending sequence of blaring horns and screeching halts in contempt for drivers outside of one s own classification. Vehicle operators will either drive carelessly, dangerously, or carefully. Drivers can be classified into three categories: The DJ, Daredevils, and Goody Two Shoes. The first type of driver falls into the careless category, also known as the DJ. DJs tend to blare music at deafening decibels. To maximize their disturbance, DJs also typically drive with all windows rolled down including the sunroof. If the carsimmediately surrounding them are not shaking along to the beat DJs are unsatisfied. DJs are also really good at multitasking. • 45. Economic Impact On Germany The impact of the Great Depression in Germany was significant because it affected virtually every section of German society, and was significant both in the short and long term. The Great Depression was caused by the Wall Street Crash in the USA in October 1929. Germany was disproportionately affected compared to other European countries, as Foreign Minister Stresemann had secured loans worth millions of dollars from American banks in order to boost its economy in the 1920s, and it had an impact on Germany economically, socially and politically in the 1930s. The significance of this impact can be measured by examining the sections of society impacted, the number of people impacted and the duration. The economic impact was the first to be felt and also affected the majority of Germans, along with the social impact. However, it was the resulting political impact that would have a much greater and long lasting effect on Germany and its population. Therefore, it was overall the most significant outcome. The impact of the Great Depressionin Germany was significant because the volume and nature of foreign trade was greatly affected. This is shown partly by the significant decline in exports; in 1928 Germany exported ВЈ630m worth of goods, but by 1932 that figure had fallen to just ВЈ280m. Imports also saw a drastic fall, as the German government wanted as many products as possible to be produced within the country to protect the economy during the Great Depression. In 1928, ...
