Nanoscale science is impacting solar energy production through improvements to solar cells. Dye-sensitized solar cells, which use inexpensive nanomaterials, convert a greater portion of the solar spectrum into electricity compared to traditional silicon-based solar cells. While silicon cells are more durable, dye-sensitized cells can be produced at lower cost due to simpler manufacturing and have a shorter energy payback period. Further advancements in nanomaterials could lead to even more efficient solar energy technologies.
