INTRODUCTION
 World facing problem of energy source – demand is not
match supply.
 In order to match – non convention energy sources –
mainly solar energy.
 Solar energy – photovoltaic cells –convert into another
form.
 Solar road ways use to extract solar energy without waste
land
33
Contt…
 Solar roadway is a series of solar panels, structurally
engineer to be driven upon.
 This idea - replace all current petroleum-based asphalt
roads, parking lots, and driveways.
 Collected energy to be used by our homes and businesses.
44
WHY SOLAR ?
 Reduced Dependence on Fossil Fuels
 Environment friendly
 Matching Peak Time Output with Peak Time Demand
 Modularity and Scalability
 Flexible Locations
55
SOLAR ROADWAYS
• It is a road surface that generates electricity.
• Photovoltaic cells embedded below a tough transparent surface
which provides sufficient traction.
66Fig 1 solar roadways
PHOTOVOLTAIC CELL
• Conversion of light energy into electrical energy called
photovoltaic cell
77

SOLAR ROAD CONSTRUCTION
A solar roadway consist of three layers:
Road surface layer/Glass layer
Electronics layer
Base plate layer
88Fig 4 Layers of solar roadways
ROAD SUFACE LAYER
• Top most layers of assembly, solar rays is reach upto the
photovoltaic cells.
• Rough enough to provide great traction to avoid the skidding
of vehicles.
• Embedded with LEDs and a heating element.
99Fig 5 Road surface layer
ELECTRONICS LAYER
• It contains photovoltaic cells which absorbs solar energy.
• It contains - microprocessor board with support circuitry for
sensing loads on the surface.
• Controlling a heating element with a view to reducing or
eliminating snow.
• The LEDs can also be programmed – show - speed limit -
warning to the drivers instantly - driving too fast.

BASE PLATE LAYER
• Electronics layer collects energy from the sun - base plate
layer - distributes that power.
• Data signals (phone, TV, internet, etc.) down the line to all
homes and businesses connected to the solar roadway.
• It needs to be weatherproof to protect the electronics layer
above it.

INTELLIGENT HIGHWAY
 LEDs is use to show the instructions such as - SLOW, STOP,
GO, SPEED LIMIT, etc.
 The LEDS programmed to warn drivers of an animal on the
road, an accident, or construction work.
 Central control stations instantly customize the lanes and
words on the panels as like screen, reducing traffic.

ILLUMINATED ROADWAYS
 People driving their vehicle at night cannot see the road ahead
due to on coming headlights or rain.
 The Solar Roadways will have LEDs which will illuminate the
lanes.
 The rate of accidents will be reduced.
 Illumination of roads will add to the aesthetics of the city.

ELECTRIC CARS
• Induction plating embedded inside - roads - electric cars –
recharged - motion on top - roads.
• Reduce the costs and the time-inconvenience of waiting at a
charging station.
• Charging can stand-by charging - plugging in the charger - slot
vehicle
• Charging can while vehicle is parked in the parking lot.

SNOW ICE MANAGMENT
 Snow on roads, It makes driving dangerous.
Asphalt roads they get damaged when this snow is melted and
increases the maintenance cost.
A Solar Roadway heat themselves with their embedded heating
elements and melt away all the snow.
The panels is used stored energy to stay heated to slightly
above freezing, which would eliminate snow.

CONCLUSION
 For roughly the same cost of the current systems (asphalt
roads and fossil fuel burning electricity generation
plants), the Solar Roadways can be implemented.
 No more Global Warming.
 Safer driving conditions.
 Far less pollution.
 A new secure highway infrastructure that pays for itself.
 A decentralized, self-healing, secure power grid.
