Private Cloud
IaaS & PaaS
 Rapidly implemented pattern-
based cloud deployment
where cloud becomes the
workload
 Option of IBM, OEM or open
source cloud management
software stacks
 Option of IBM, SoftLayer or
Client HW
 200-plus Application patterns
(App, MW & DB)
Private Shared Cloud
IaaS
 Requires a highly built out and
resilient infrastructure
 More suited to traditional
three-tier application models,
(App, MW and DB)
 Typical application being SAP,
Oracle ERP solutions
 Less reliance on a highly built
out infrastructure
 Resiliency is built into the
application layer
 More suited to web-centric and
native cloud programming
environments
 Typical applications:NETBASE
media solutions, 10gen and
mongoDB business analytics
solutions

IBM Cloud: Think it. Build it. Tap into it.
 Formed in 2005 and acquired by IBM in July 2013
 Founding principles: innovation, empowerment, automation and integration
 Model predicated on software-driven infrastructure (IMS)
Standardization for uniform deployment of workloads
across data centers. Building of ‘pods’ that consist of
standard deployment of servers, power and ancillary
services.
Automation manages provisioning as well
as operational and business management
processes
SoftLayer built-in automation through standardization helps accelerate responsiveness and
reduce risks.

IBM Cloud: Think it. Build it. Tap into it.
SoftLayer, an IBM company, stands apart from other
cloud vendors providing you with unique options
The initial cloud
revolution was based on
assumptions such as:
All resources
are virtualized
All resources
are shared
But cloud
computing
needs have
evolved.
SoftLayer® embraces
the idea that:
… virtualization
is a choice with
a flexible set of
options
… resources can
be shared,
dedicated
or mixed
But you
have the
ultimate
CHOICE

IBM SoftLayer offers a broad portfolio of infrastructure choices to help
you achieve the right configuration for the right application workload
Bare metal with

environment
Any compute and storage combination at any time is available in three models.
SoftLayer offers bare metal and virtual servers that are hosted in the same environment, so clients aren’t
restricted to one type of IT infrastructure. To break down the barriers between physical and virtual, we’ve
developed Flex Images technology to help streamline the process of moving between the two.

 Higher degree of
customization possible
for hardware, network,
security
 Reduced cost for
workloads with high
server utilization
 Provisioned minutes
 Direct VPN to private

 Open API standards
 Based upon enterprise
Citrix Xenserver
 Customer can select
data center and point of
deployment
 Reduced cost for burst
workload

Flexibility
We offer a standardized, modular infrastructure
on one platform with the ability to customize
selections to meet your requirements.
 Move back and forth between dedicated and shared servers for greater business agility
with the Flex Images™ server deployment system
 Provides image capture and deployment for dedicated servers, unified across bare metal
and shared cloud servers

Performance and
control
Our triple-network architecture is fundamental to
the performance of the SoftLayer infrastructure.
SoftLayer integrates three distinct and redundant gigabit network architectures—public, private,
and data center-to-data center management—into a network-within-a-network topology.
Any device at any time can have any of three types of connections:
 Public network: Connection to public Internet through Tier 1 carriers with multiple 10 Gbps connections for
public traffic to hosted web sites or online resources
 Private network: Virtual private network (VPN) server access through dedicated, stand-alone third carriers
not connected to the public network with unmetered bandwidth usage between servers and data centers
 Management network: Out-of-plane management network connection through an unlimited VPN
connection for more secure management and connectivity between servers housed in separate data centers

IBM SoftLayer Datacenters: Global Footprint
Source: http://www.softlayer.com/our-platform
The expanding SoftLayer global footprint offers you access to our infrastructure choices through 18 data
centers for improved global reach and performance.
Every aspect of a SoftLayer data center—from location and accessibility to power density and redundancy—is
designed to guarantee its security, resiliency, and efficiency.
We build each center to the same spec and equip it to provide the full SoftLayer catalog of services. And each is
staffed 24x7 with experts to troubleshoot and address the rare issues that can’t be directly resolved through our
automated management system.

EU Data Privacy
Softlayer organizational measures to support Data Privacy and Security
are stated by a set of compliance certifications
• SoftLayer is compliant with major industry and regulatory standards
US NIST SP800-53 standard
Targeted for
2015
Supported Workloads IncludeSoftLayer Manages To:
SoftLayer Compliance
Demonstrated Through (~):
+
(*)
(*) FedRAMP pATO and ATO targeted for dedicated, special purpose FedRAMP data centers located in
USA. FedRAMP and/or ITAR certification will NOT apply to commercial data centers
(~) Data centers are added to the SoftLayer audit/review cycle in the next available cycle after DC goes
live. Because each (commercial) data center is managed to the same standards and procedures, we
assert that we will (easily) achieve compliance certifications for each new data center as it is added to
the SoftLayer audit cycle.

Public/Private Cloud IaaS Private Modular Cloud Private Cloud IaaS & PaaS  Rapidly implemented pattern- based cloud deployment where cloud becomes the workload  Option of IBM, OEM or open source cloud management software stacks  Option of IBM, SoftLayer or Client HW  200-plus Application patterns (App, MW & DB) Private Shared Cloud IaaS  Requires a highly built out and resilient infrastructure  More suited to traditional three-tier application models, (App, MW and DB)  Typical application being SAP, Oracle ERP solutions  Less reliance on a highly built out infrastructure  Resiliency is built into the application layer  More suited to web-centric and native cloud programming environments  Typical applications:NETBASE media solutions, 10gen and mongoDB business analytics solutions SoftLayer premise Client, IBM or SoftLayer premise IBM premise IBM Cloud Managed Services OEM = original equipment manufacturer, IaaS = infrastructure as a service, PaaS = platform as a service, MW = Middleware, DB = database, App = Application HW = hardware, Win = Windows IBM cloud adoption models take advantage of IBM Cloud Managed Services, SoftLayer® and IBM Private Modular Cloud
  • 4. © 2015 IBM Corporation4 IBM Cloud: Think it. Build it. Tap into it.  Formed in 2005 and acquired by IBM in July 2013  Founding principles: innovation, empowerment, automation and integration  Model predicated on software-driven infrastructure (IMS) Standardization for uniform deployment of workloads across data centers. Building of ‘pods’ that consist of standard deployment of servers, power and ancillary services. Automation manages provisioning as well as operational and business management processes SoftLayer built-in automation through standardization helps accelerate responsiveness and reduce risks.
  • 5. © 2015 IBM Corporation5 IBM Cloud: Think it. Build it. Tap into it. SoftLayer, an IBM company, stands apart from other cloud vendors providing you with unique options The initial cloud revolution was based on assumptions such as: All resources are virtualized All resources are shared But cloud computing needs have evolved. SoftLayer® embraces the idea that: … virtualization is a choice with a flexible set of options … resources can be shared, dedicated or mixed But you have the ultimate CHOICE
  • 6. © 2015 IBM Corporation6 IBM Cloud: Think it. Build it. Tap into it. IBM SoftLayer offers a broad portfolio of infrastructure choices to help you achieve the right configuration for the right application workload Bare metal with your own stack Shared virtual environment Dedicated virtualized environment Any compute and storage combination at any time is available in three models. SoftLayer offers bare metal and virtual servers that are hosted in the same environment, so clients aren’t restricted to one type of IT infrastructure. To break down the barriers between physical and virtual, we’ve developed Flex Images technology to help streamline the process of moving between the two. Cloud Managed Services Provides a scalable, cost- effective, managed, hosted cloud infrastructure with more flexible configuration options and enterprise- class capabilities and improve your time to market for new services  Better I/O performance (such as, no “hypervisor tax”) and network  Higher degree of customization possible for hardware, network, security  Reduced cost for workloads with high server utilization  Provisioned minutes  Direct VPN to private network created almost instantely  Better security than with multitenant cloud  Customized configuration allowed  Open API standards  Based upon enterprise Citrix Xenserver  Customer can select data center and point of deployment  Reduced cost for burst workload
  • 7. 7 IBM Cloud: Think it. Build it. Tap into it. © 2015 IBM Corporation Flexibility We offer a standardized, modular infrastructure on one platform with the ability to customize selections to meet your requirements.  Move back and forth between dedicated and shared servers for greater business agility with the Flex Images™ server deployment system  Provides image capture and deployment for dedicated servers, unified across bare metal and shared cloud servers Dedicated server Unified image library Shared virtualized server  Combine workloads on the same network: Use a combination of virtual servers for your front-end workloads that need to scale out while using bare metal for your back end high input/output workloads like app or database servers.
  • 8. 8 IBM Cloud: Think it. Build it. Tap into it. © 2015 IBM Corporation Performance and control Our triple-network architecture is fundamental to the performance of the SoftLayer infrastructure. SoftLayer integrates three distinct and redundant gigabit network architectures—public, private, and data center-to-data center management—into a network-within-a-network topology. Any device at any time can have any of three types of connections:  Public network: Connection to public Internet through Tier 1 carriers with multiple 10 Gbps connections for public traffic to hosted web sites or online resources  Private network: Virtual private network (VPN) server access through dedicated, stand-alone third carriers not connected to the public network with unmetered bandwidth usage between servers and data centers  Management network: Out-of-plane management network connection through an unlimited VPN connection for more secure management and connectivity between servers housed in separate data centers
