- #5 Main Point: IBM’s secret sauce for the built-in expertise of PureSystems are the patterns of expertise learned from decades of client and partner engagements that are captured, tested and refined in the development lab and fully built-in to the system or able to be deployed to the system IBM uniquely builds in expertise with patterns of expertise What are patterns of expertise? They are proven best practices and expertise for complex tasks learned from decades of client and partner engagements that are captured, lab tested and optimized and then built into the system. This isn’t just a blueprint or set of instructions to help you – this is about moving towards a model where an IT user specifies their desired outcome for their applications instead of having to monitor, tweak and tune numerous abstract variables and configuration options Why is that important? Agility: Faster time-to-value – taking out the manual steps and automating delivery. Efficiency: Reduced costs and resources – growing the list of things you do NOT have to do anymore Simplicity: Simpler skills requirements – reducing the amount of in house expertise you need Control: Lower risk and errors – implemented in a repeatable, optimized fashion that significantly lowers the risk of human error. To illustrate a pattern of expertise lets consider the view of the world is that they have a simple application and that application requires a database…what is so hard about that? But IT knows what it required to provide this solution to the business and what it takes to keep it running supporting the demands of the business…it takes a number of things ranging from HTTP servers, application servers to host the actual application, caching servers to help with performance, directory services to ensure that only the right set of users have access to the application, database servers…and the list can go on and on…and beyond the list of components to the overall solutions, there is the integration of each of these components together and ensuring that they are properly configured and tuned to meet the demands of the business. Patterns of Expertise take automation to the next level by not only capturing this complex application architecture and deployment model into an easily deployable form, but the system then uses the pattern and the information contained in it, including various policies and service levels to be met by the application and the system automates the monitoring and lifecycle management of the deployed pattern…dynamically adjusting underlying resources and the topology of the application to meet those service levels. IBM PureSystems enable clients to consolidate application and data workloads on systems that are optimized to deliver top performance and efficient use of resources. Applications consolidated on PureApplication System can rely on databases or data marts also consolidated on the system. Or, if they have more demanding data requirements – they can access the data services provided by a PureData System. Patterns for deploying applications on the PureApplication system can specify a database or data warehouse on a PureData System.
- #7 It’s also important to make sure clients are aware of the different ways in which they can use patterns. Due to the open nature of the system, and also due in a large part to a dedicated team of product managers who focus on patterns, customers can get patterns from a number of sources. They can get patterns from the broad ecosystem of partners, they can of course get their patterns from a ever expanding list from IBM, we think that the combination of those two are going to represent roughly 80% of the workloads you will encounter. But if those two items don’t meet the clients needs, they can capture their own expertise into a pattern. We provide image construction tooling for clients to author their own pattern based on they’re specific requirements and middleware, runtimes or databases they need. As long as it runs on Windows, RedHat or AIX, it can be patternized. But let’s take a bit more of a look on the first two.
