PLNs have expanded from local connections to include global communities on social media and websites where people can interact, share resources and learn from others with similar interests. Developing a PLN takes effort but provides opportunities for ongoing professional development, learning new skills, and staying up to date in one's field from connections around the world.

More than a decade ago, the American Psychological Association (APA) Task Force on Distance Education and Training in Professional Psychology (2002).
As a response to how an institution might address concerns cited by the task force and as a resource for faculty members considering online teaching, the APA Committee of Psychology Teachers at Community Colleges (PT@CC) has created the Guide to Establishing an Online Teaching Program.
It is divided into three sections: Faculty Preparation for Online
Teaching, College Support for Online Teaching, and Online
Student Support Services.
Personal Learning Environments
Personal learning environments (PLEs) allow learners to take control of and manage their own learning by setting goals, managing content and processes, and communicating with others. A PLE can include various tools like desktop and web-based applications that integrate formal and informal learning. It recognizes how today's learners learn and prepares them for the global economy.

Using social media to support learning in higher education
My keynote presentation considers how social media and digital technologies can be utilised effectively to enhance both informal and formal learning. Drawing upon the 5C Framework (Nerantzi and Beckingham 2014) I will share examples of how social media is used to connect, communicate, curate, collaborate and create; and through a student-staff partnership called ‘SMASH’ (Social Media for Academic Studies at Hallam) how with my students we have explored how social media can be used for ‘learning activities’ within and beyond the classroom, to ‘organise learning’ using relevant social media tools to curate and organise information, and the importance of ‘showcasing learning’ to enable students to openly share outcomes and projects.
