THE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE CLASSROOM
INTRODUCTION
• What is Social Media
Social media is digital technology that allows the sharing of ideas and
information, including text and visuals, through virtual networks and
communities. It typically features user-generated content that lends itself to
engagement via likes, shares, comments, and discussion. It refers to a variety of
technologies that facilitate the sharing of ideas and information among their users.
When used properly, social media can be a valuable addition to a department's
communications strategy.
KEY POINTS TO DISCUSS WHEN EXPLORING THE
USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE CLASSROOM
1. Improved Student Engagement
Social media platforms provide avenues for students to actively participate in class
discussions, share their thoughts, and ask questions. By integrating social media,
teachers can create a more interactive learning environment that captures students'
attention and encourages their active involvement.
2. Enhanced Collaboration and Communication
Social media platforms facilitate collaboration among students, allowing them to
work together on projects, share resources, and provide feedback to one another.
These platforms provide opportunities for students to connect beyond the confines
of the classroom, fostering a sense of community and enabling them to learn from
their peers.
3. Access to Educational Resources
Social media platforms offer a wealth of educational content, including articles, videos,
tutorials, and educational accounts or pages. By incorporating social media into the
classroom, teachers can expose students to a wider range of resources and perspectives,
making learning more dynamic and engaging.
4. Development of Digital Literacy Skills
Using social media in the classroom helps students develop digital literacy skills, such as
critically evaluating information, navigating online platforms responsibly, and engaging in
respectful online discourse. These skills are essential in today's digital age and prepare
students for their future endeavours.
5. Real-World Connections
Social media platforms enable students to connect with experts, professionals,
and other classrooms around the world. This opens up opportunities for
virtual field trips, guest speakers, and global collaborations, providing students
with real-world connections and experiences that enhance their learning.
6. Authentic Learning Experiences
Social media allows students to apply their knowledge and skills in real-world
contexts. They can create content, share their work, and receive feedback from
a broader audience beyond the classroom. This authenticity encourages
deeper learning and a sense of ownership over their education.
7. Overcoming Barriers and Challenges
While the integration of social media in the classroom offers numerous
benefits, it is essential to address potential challenges. These challenges may
include concerns about distractions, privacy issues, cyberbullying, and limited
access to technology or internet connectivity. Establishing clear guidelines,
educating students about responsible digital citizenship, and ensuring a safe
online environment can help overcome these challenges.
8. Teacher Professional Development
Teachers may require training and support to effectively incorporate social
media into their teaching practices. Offering professional development
opportunities, sharing best practices, and providing ongoing support can help
educators feel more confident in utilizing social media as an educational tool.
9. Ethical Considerations
It is crucial to discuss ethical considerations when using social media in the
classroom. Teachers must consider privacy, data security, and appropriate use of
social media platforms. Educating students about digital ethics and responsible
online behaviour helps them navigate social media spaces responsibly.
10. Evaluation and Reflection
It is important for teachers to evaluate the effectiveness of social media
integration in their classrooms. By reflecting on the outcomes and assessing
the impact on student learning and engagement, teachers can make informed
decisions about the continued use of social media and make adjustments as
needed.
SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS COMMONLY USED IN
EDUCATIONAL SETTINGS
a. Edmodo
Edmodo is a social learning platform designed specifically for education. It provides a
safe and secure space for teachers, students, and parents to connect, collaborate, and
share resources. Teachers can create assignments, facilitate discussions, and provide
feedback to students.
b. Twitter
Twitter is a microblogging platform that allows users to share short messages, known as
tweets. Teachers can create class hashtags to facilitate discussions, share resources, and
connect with experts in various fields. Twitter chats, where participants engage in real-
time conversations using a specific hashtag, are also popular in education.
c. Padlet
Padlet is a versatile digital platform that acts as a collaborative wall. It
allows students and teachers to post text, images, videos, and other
multimedia content. Padlet is useful for brainstorming, sharing ideas, and
collaborating on projects.
d. Flipgrid
Flipgrid is a video discussion platform that enables students to share short
video responses to prompts or questions. It promotes student voice,
collaboration, and reflection. Teachers can create grids, post topics, and
facilitate video discussions among students.
e. YouTube
While primarily a video-sharing platform, YouTube offers a vast array of
educational content. Teachers can curate playlists of educational videos, assign
video-watching tasks, and encourage students to create their own educational
videos. YouTube also provides closed captioning and translation features to cater
to diverse learners.
f. Instagram
Instagram is a photo and video-sharing platform that can be utilized for
educational purposes. Teachers can create class accounts to share visual content
related to lessons, showcase student work, and provide updates. Instagram can
also be a platform for storytelling and visual learning experiences.
g. LinkedIn:
LinkedIn is a professional networking platform widely used by adults. In an
educational context, it can be utilized for career exploration, connecting with
industry professionals, and developing students' professional online presence.
It is particularly relevant for higher education and career readiness programs.
h. Seesaw
Seesaw is a digital portfolio platform that allows students to showcase their
work, reflect on their learning, and receive feedback from teachers and peers. It
supports a wide range of media types, including photos, videos, drawings, and
text, making it suitable for all grade levels.
CONCLUSION
• There are many other social media platforms and tools available that can be
tailored to specific educational needs and goals. When selecting a platform, it is
important to consider factors such as privacy, data security, age-appropriateness,
and compliance with school policies and regulations.
• Therefore, use of social media in the classroom offers opportunities to enhance
student engagement, collaboration, and learning. By leveraging social media
platforms effectively and addressing associated challenges, educators can create
more dynamic and authentic learning experiences for their students.
