on social media influence their purchases. (Forbes)

outlet for researching small businesses before visiting a
store in person.
Nearly 85% of the shoppers surveyed said local deals
and offers on Facebook are important in their decisions
to purchase an item in-store.

7. First Things First
If you do not have a
website or your
website is awful, social
media will not be
effective.
Your website is your
marketing hub.
You get out of social
media what you put in
– like exercise!

8. It’s Not About You.
Using social media
effectively means
understanding your
target audience and target
customer.
What do they like? What
are they interested in?
What moves them? What
do they like to share?
What do they like to
read?
HINT: It’s more than just
your business!!!!!

9. It’s About THEM.
For example – if you provide a
product or service to moms,
create content (posts, blogs,
tweets, videos) that help,
inform and entertain moms.

10. Respect the Channel.
The platforms are different, and each has its own
audience, users and unique culture.
What works on Pinterest may not work on Twitter.
Speak the language of the channel you are using:
Animated GIFs on Tumblr.
Infographics on Pinterest.
Stunning photography on Instagram.
Funny, light-hearted posts on Facebook.

11. 6 Ways to Get More Engagement
1) Add photos to each
post or tweet.
Dan Zarrella of Likeable
Media conducted a study
where he tracked and
analyzed more than 1.3
million posts from the
10,000 most-Liked Facebook
Pages, and he found that
photos work best.

14. A Note On Photos and Links
Facebook is cracking down on link
bait and memes.
…we will start taking into account
whether people tend to spend time
away from Facebook after clicking a
link, or whether they tend to come
straight back to News Feed when we
rank stories with links in them.
People prefer links posted as links.
The Facebook newsfeed algorithm now
prioritizes links that are posted as
links, and show fewer links in photos,
videos and status updates.

15. 6 Ways to Get More Engagement
2) Post at the right time of day for YOUR audience.
Buddymedia published a study where they
discovered a 20% higher rate of engagement on posts
published in the mornings and evenings.
Dan Zarella’s study found that content posted later
in the day (EST) got more likes and shares – peaking
around 8 PM.
You should always use your analytics to determine
when your audience is looking at and interacting with
your posts.

16. 6 Ways to Get More Engagement
3) Ask for interaction.
Don’t make people think about their answers.
Think about how people consume Facebook – while
watching TV, while waiting in line, while doing work.
Questions that work:
Fill in the blank – “My favorite back-to-school memory
was when____________.”
Like if you agree!
Comment if you disagree!
Share please!
Yes or No questions

17. 6 Ways to Get More Engagement
4) Be relevant.
Remember WHY people are on social media!
To see what the world is talking about.
To see what their community is talking about.
To have fun.
To be entertained.
To interact with friends and family.
Make sure to keep your pulse on what people are
interested in, talking about and thinking about –
insert your commentary or ask people for theirs.

20. Sharing is the Goal.
People only share on social
media if it will resonate with
their friends & connections –
if it will make them look good.
Make posts PG or G rated so
people will share it.
Do you want people to like the
post, share the post, comment
on it or click on the link?
The risk of going for everything
means ending up with nothing.
