Social Media and the Future
of Journalism

    Group One
What have we seen so far?
   New social media that are part of the “Web
    2.0” have already had a dramatic impact on
    the mass media.
   Many news papers have gone bankrupt or
    are severely reduced in size.
   Broadcasters have faced a large drop in
    ratings as much of the traffic they once saw
    goes to the internet.
   News sources have not found an effective
    way to monetize on the internet.
As a result…

   Many newspapers have stopped printing their
    papers and become online only.
   The number of foreign correspondents sent
    out has dropped dramatically as newspapers
    and broadcasters could not afford the
    expenses.
How we will research
   To aid us in our research we plan to follow
    industry professionals on Twitter so that we
    may gain an up to date picture of the industry
    as it adapts to the new marketplace.
   We will also pay attention to several websites
    that are on the cutting edge of journalism and
    broadcasting research.
   We will use wikirank and wikipedia to see
    what terms are popular or controversial at the
    moment.
Who we will follow

   Peter Cashmore, CEO of Mashable.
   Saul Hansell, the editor of the NYT’s “Bits”
    blog.
   Jay Rosen, journalism professor at NYU,
    founder of pressthink.org
   And others…
Websites of Interest
   CNN, they are attempting the adapt to the new
    social media. We will study them as an example of
    what news media sites are trying to do.
   MSNBC’s website is similar in that they are also
    attempting to become a “hub” in the user-generated
    world.
   Wikipedia (and wikirank) are examples of how the
    public has access to a large mouthpiece now. They
    make an effective way to roughly gauge public
    opinion on topics.
Conclusions

   Although it is too soon to extract and useful
    data about the change of opinion over time
    on our subject, it is clear from our sources
    that there is a great deal of conversation
    about the emergence of social media and the
    traditional media’s fight for survival.

Social Media And The Future Of Journalism

  • 1. Social Media and the Future of Journalism Group One
  • 2. What have we seen so far?  New social media that are part of the “Web 2.0” have already had a dramatic impact on the mass media.  Many news papers have gone bankrupt or are severely reduced in size.  Broadcasters have faced a large drop in ratings as much of the traffic they once saw goes to the internet.  News sources have not found an effective way to monetize on the internet.
  • 3. As a result…  Many newspapers have stopped printing their papers and become online only.  The number of foreign correspondents sent out has dropped dramatically as newspapers and broadcasters could not afford the expenses.
  • 4. How we will research  To aid us in our research we plan to follow industry professionals on Twitter so that we may gain an up to date picture of the industry as it adapts to the new marketplace.  We will also pay attention to several websites that are on the cutting edge of journalism and broadcasting research.  We will use wikirank and wikipedia to see what terms are popular or controversial at the moment.
  • 5. Who we will follow  Peter Cashmore, CEO of Mashable.  Saul Hansell, the editor of the NYT’s “Bits” blog.  Jay Rosen, journalism professor at NYU, founder of pressthink.org  And others…
  • 6. Websites of Interest  CNN, they are attempting the adapt to the new social media. We will study them as an example of what news media sites are trying to do.  MSNBC’s website is similar in that they are also attempting to become a “hub” in the user-generated world.  Wikipedia (and wikirank) are examples of how the public has access to a large mouthpiece now. They make an effective way to roughly gauge public opinion on topics.
  • 7. Conclusions  Although it is too soon to extract and useful data about the change of opinion over time on our subject, it is clear from our sources that there is a great deal of conversation about the emergence of social media and the traditional media’s fight for survival.
