This document discusses how a music magazine represents different social groups. It represents social groups through the images used, which include people of various ethnicities to appeal to a wider R&B audience. Youth culture is represented positively by portraying someone in tracksuit bottoms as successful. The magazine also represents the social group of R&B artists through casual, youthful photographs of the artists that show their urban lifestyle and fashion choices like caps and tracksuits. Overall, the magazine aims to represent the urban social group interested in hip hop, R&B, and rap music.

1. How does your media product represent particular social
groups?
In this slide share I am going to be discussing how my media product
portrays, represents and highlights different social groups.
Many aspects of a music magazine, from the images to font style can be used to
highlight and represent social groups.

2. I used various ethnicities throughout my magazine to slightly challenge the typical
R&B /Hip Hop audience of black/afro Caribbean. This was to appeal to a wider
audience, due to my audience research showing that many different audiences, in
terms of race, now regularly listen to R&B music. Therefore, I felt it would be
appropriate to appeal to these various different social groups in terms of race by
using the different ethnicities within my magazine.

3. You can also infer a lot about a social group through
the use of costume. The main artist is dressed in
tracksuit bottoms and a T-Shirt which straight away
shows the youthfulness of the magazine, but this
has been used to represent the negative stereotype
of British youth associated with tracksuit bottoms, in
a positive light. This is representing it in a positive
light as it is showing someone with that sense of
fashion being successful and hard working.
I felt it was important to represent this negative
stereo type of youth in a positive light as it is a
controversial topic in Britain and there are many
innocent youths who shouldn't be portrayed in this
negative image. Therefore, by addressing this
through a source of media, in this case a music
magazine can get this point across and help to
improve this negative representation of this
particular social group.

4. Another social group it has to represent is the representation of an R&B artist.
One way this is done is through the use of photographs. The photographs of my
R&B artists reflects their lifestyle through the way that they dress and their body
language.
For instance, on my front cover, double page spread and contents page there
are photographs of my main fictional artist named J.Campbell and he is wearing
the sort of things an R&B artist would wear such as a cap, tracksuit
bottoms, Chain, etc. This helps to represent the social group in terms of the
clothes they often wear and present them as not being ‘too dressed up’ with
them being casual and showing the urbanism through the clothing/costume.
Furthermore, the clothing of the artist is very youthful as well as the artist being
young and youthful them self. Therefore, this represented the social group of
youth culture due to my main audience age group being teenagers, which was
noticed through my audience research survey.
My magazine represents the urban social group that are interested in music
from the hip hop/ R&B or rap culture. This is easily recognised from the front
cover with the main image being a young mixed race male who is represented
as an artist.
