Rome and Carthage are often compared throughout history in their successes,
strengths, and military forces. They were both rivals yet imitated many of their
strategies in order to overcome each other as super powers.
The exact origins of Carthage and Rome are not documented but handed down stories
through the ages. Nevertheless, we do know that Carthage was initially a colony in
Tyre. Carthage grew in power from that colony to become the capital of one of the
greatest empires in history and almost an equal to Rome.
Carthage was the first foreign rival in which Rome felt threatened by outside of Italy.

Rome knew it needed to build 100 ships as great as the Carthaginian ships in the
course of only sixty days. So by using a wrecked Carthaginian that was left on the
banks of the Italian coastal area, Rome began using it as a prototype for building
the new Roman ships. One of the differences between the old Roman naval ships
and the Carthaginian ships is that the Roman ships were triremes, or ships with
only three banks of oars, and were unable to cope with the great Carthaginian
vessels, which were quinquiremes, or ships with five banks of oars , according to
Morey (1901). Another facet to become a great naval power was for the Romans to
train their sailors the art of rowing like the Carthaginian sailors. In order to train the
men how to row they built prototypes the rowing bans on land to rehearse. The
Romans soldiers had always outweighed the Carthaginian sailors in hand to hand
combat. To utilize this strength, the Romans also added drawbridges to their newly
built ships. These drawbridges gave the Romans an added advantage. These
drawbridges could be used to board Carthaginian ships and overtake the forces with
hand to hand
