Speakers: Simon Vaughan & Jon Scott
For today’s undergraduates, information technology (IT) plays an integral role in their everyday lives. They actively use many different technologies for their studies, work, and recreation. This aim of this presentation is to explore the use of Social Business from the perspective of a student and show how Social Business can be used to increase the engagement with these students (both before they join the University and while at University). The presentation will look at how IBM Connections can supplement tools such as Facebook and Twitter to provide an‘exceptional Virtual University experience’ for all Students and members of staff.

Informal Learning via Social Media - Does it Affect Teaching and Science? - c...Isa Jahnke
TITLE. Informal Learning via Social Media - Does it Affect Teaching and Science?
ABSTRACT. The paper (COSCI12 conference) argues that didactical designers, teachers and researchers can learn from informal learning situations to build a meaningful learning experience for students in universities and schools. By illustrating three research projects, (a) InPUD, an informal learning community in higher education, (b) CSCL@Work, informal work-based learning and (c) iPad-Didactics, didactical designs by teachers in K9 schools using iPads, five theses will be described which show the shift from traditional teaching and prepare a new understanding of learning called ‘learning to be creative’.
Neutral version (university references removed) of a workshop designed and run for the University of Bristol, March 2015. Deals with issues of blended, flipped and borderless learning and tries to distil some key principles.
Toward Society 3.0: A New Paradigm for 21st century educationJohn Moravec
The convergence of globalization, the emergence of the knowledge society and accelerating change contribute to what might be best termed a New Paradigm of knowledge production in education. The New Paradigm reflects the emerging shifts in thought, beliefs, priorities and practice in regard to education in society. While the three component trends in the new paradigm are not unknown to educational leaders, discussion of the trends as elements of a larger system is largely absent. These new patterns of thought and belief are forming to harness and manage the chaos, indeterminacy, and complex relationships of the postmodern. This lecture provides a macro-level perspective of these three phenomena as they impact education at all levels. Such perspectives provide insight to leaders throughout the world on how educational institutions relate to the New Paradigm of knowledge production. The lecture then explores "what's next" as we build from the New Paradigm to co-construct Education 3.0 to complement Society 3.0.

Soccnx III - Using Social Controls in XPagesLetsConnect
Speakers: Martin Donnelly & Tony McGuckin
There is a lot of talk about "social" these days - social applications, social business, social media, social services and so on. This session uses a definition of "social" in the context of IBM Domino XPages, custom application development and IBM Domino/IBM XWork Server. It describes new social requirements, maps them to technologies and shows how the XPages Extension Library helps you create powerful social solutions to integrate with IBM Connections and other social providers within your custom application development. People are connected more than ever, blurring the line between business and private life. For example often employees have Twitter accounts that they use to tweet both private and business messages. Many employees use their private smartphones to access business applications and data. Furthermore, information is scattered more than ever, within enterprises and in public social networks, within on premise systems and on the cloud. The corporate inbox is no longer only the mail inbox, new notifications also come in via IBM Connections, Facebook, Google+, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc! The XPages Extension Library provides utilities that make integration of Social APIs really easy, including a new storage facility for OAuth application and consumer tokens. IBM Domino XPages is on the fast track to help make your applications social. Participate in this session to see the latest contributions to the XPages Extension Library for Social Business. XPages is ready today, are you?
Understanding and supporting students' digital literaciesMartin Oliver
This session will introduce the work being undertaken by a JISC- funded study based at the Institute, which is exploring what digital literacies our students are using or need to develop. This work has followed a phased approach, starting with general data from the iGraduate survey, using this to inform a series of focus groups (with PGCE, Masters, Doctoral and Online MRes students), and to lay the groundwork for a longitudinal study with a dozen students. The findings to date have identified practical challenges facing students' use of technology in their studies, pointed to conceptual issues such as their developing sense of professional and scholarly identity, and allowed us to map the spaces and places that students use or create as they pursue their studies. The presentation will identify early implications and provide an overview of the remainder of the project's work. Participants will be invited to relate the project's work to their students' activities and inform the implementation phase that will conclude the project.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

From a mathematical standpoint, the S-curve is just the sum total of the normal distribution of adoption over time. Everett Rogers identified 5 kinds of adopters, each with their own unique reasons for trying the new idea.
Geoffrey Moore talks about “Crossing the Chasm” (his book). His point is that to transition from one type of adopter to the next always has some challenges, but the biggest (the “chasm”) is moving from Early Adopters to Early Majority. This requires reframing the new technology from something cool to something productive. For simplicity in developing an adoption plan, I have reduced his 5 types to 3 – Early Adopters, the Massive Middle, and Laggards. The majority will simultaneously be looking at what the early adopters are doing and listening to the complaints from the laggards as to why the new tool or idea won’t work.
Leverage the Early Adopter activity and the Laggard comments to develop the message for the Massive Middle.
