John Quincy Adams was the 6th US President from 1825-1829. In the 1824 election, there were four candidates from the single Jeffersonian Republican party, including Adams. Andrew Jackson received the most popular votes but no candidate won a majority, so the House of Representatives elected Adams. When Adams appointed Henry Clay, who had supported his candidacy, as Secretary of State, it fueled accusations of a "corrupt bargain" between the two. Adams' presidency was hindered by this accusation as well as rising sectionalism over high tariffs and a lack of congressional support, and he served only one term.
