Reviewing modern web applications can be quite challenging, and this talk will go into details on how we can automate the boring (but necessary parts) and how to set a roadmap of what should be focused on when dealing with modern JavaScript applications.

This can be a very difficult task and developers are often set up for failure. Most developers did not learn about secure coding or crypto in school. The languages and frameworks that developers use to build web applications are often lacking critical core controls or are insecure by default in some way. There may be inherent flaws in requirements and designs. It is also very rare when organizations provide developers with prescriptive requirements that guide them down the path of secure software. When it comes to web security, developers are often set up to lose the security game.
This document was written by developers for developers, to assist those new to secure development. It aims to guide developers and other software development professionals down the path of secure web application software development.
This document is neither scientific nor complete. In fact it is a bit misguided. There are more than 10 issues that developers need to be aware of. Some of these “top ten” controls will be very specific, others will be general categories. Some of these items are technical, others are process based. Some may argue that this document includes items that are not even controls at all. All of these concerns are fair. Again, this is an awareness document meant for those new to secure software development. It is a start, not an end.
Cross Site Scripting (XSS) Defense with JavaJim Manico
Cross Site Scripting Defense is difficult. The Java Programming language does not provide native key defenses necessary to throughly prevent XSS. As technologies such as Content Security Policy emerge, we still need pragmatic advice to stop XSS in legacy applications as well as new applications using traditional Java frameworks. First generation encoding libraries had both performance and completeness problems that prevent developers from through, production-safe XSS defense. This talk will deeply review the OWASP Java Encoder Project and the OWASP HTML Sanitizer Project and give detailed code samples highlighting their use. Additional advice on next-generation JavaScript and JSON workflows using the OWASP JSON Sanitizer will also be reviewed.
Access Control is a necessary security control at almost every layer within a web application. This talk will discuss several of the key access control anti-patterns commonly found during website security audits. These access control anti-patterns include hard-coded security policies, lack of horizontal access control, and "fail open" access control mechanisms. In reviewing these and other access control problems, we will discuss and design a positive access control mechanism that is data contextual, activity based, configurable, flexible, and deny-by-default - among other positive design attributes that make up a robust web-based access-control mechanism.

Ten years after the first OWASP Top Ten list of Web Application Security risks has been published, the basics of protecting a typical JEE/Rails/PHP/.NET, webapp are becoming mainstream knowledge (although never enough, as the endless series of high profile vulerabilities demonstates).
But the industry-wide move towards HTML5 and Single Page Applications, motivated by the opportunity for more sophisticated interaction and UX, is again upsetting the balance between Hackers and Developers. A wave of new-generation front-end technologies such as Web Components, AngularJS and Ember is Developers are attracting Developers with their combination of productivity and innovative UX, but at the same time opens the door to new vulnerabilities and security challenges.
This talk will summarize the main principles of Secure Coding, and will discuss their application to HTML5 applications that interact with REST or WebSocket backends to prevent major risks (including OWASP Top Ten).
A concrete example will demonstrate the use of tools and libraries, from RBAC to JWT, from Spring Security to AngularJS modules for implementing secure HTML5/JS apps.
How do JavaScript frameworks impact the security of applications?Ksenia Peguero
The best way to enable developers to create secure applications is to “shift left” in security. That means providing developers with the tools and techniques that help build more secure applications from the get-go. Developers may get security controls into their applications in different ways. They may write them from scratch following security training or guidance, they may use open source libraries, or they may use frameworks that have the security features built in already. In this talk we explore JavaScript applications that use different types of security controls implemented at levels ranging from developer code, to libraries and plugins, to different frameworks, and analyze which applications actually turn out to be more secure. This work is based on analysis of over 500 open source JavaScript applications on GitHub that use client-side frameworks and template engines to prevent XSS, as well as server-side frameworks (Express, Koa, Hapi, Sails, Meteor) and CSRF prevention mechanisms. In conclusion, we provide data-driven recommendations for framework maintainers and application developers on how to develop and choose a framework that will actually make applications more secure.
