HOW HARMFUL IS SMOKING?

Tobacco is 2nd major cause of mortality in the
world & currently responsible for the death of
about 1 in 10 adults worldwide.
Every year hundreds of thousands of people
around the world die from diseases caused by
smoking.
One in two lifetime smokers will die from
their habit. Half of these deaths will occur
in middle age.

Smoking causes disease and is a slow way to die. The strain
of smoking effects on the body often causes years of
suffering.
Emphysema is a long-term,
progressive disease
of the lungs that
primarily causes
shortness of breath. It is
an illness that slowly rots
the lungs. People with
emphysema often get
bronchitis again and
again, and suffer lung and
heart failure.

Smokers are 10X more likely to die from lung cancer than non-smokers.
Male smokers have a lower sperm count.
Female smokers have more trouble getting pregnant.

What is “SECONDHAND SMOKING”?
Secondhand smoke, also known as environmental
tobacco smoke or passive smoke, is the combination of
side-stream smoke, i.e. smoke that is emitted between
puffs of burning tobacco (cigarettes, pipes or cigars),
and mainstream smoke, i.e. smoke that is exhaled by
the smoker.

What is “SECONDHAND SMOKING”?
Secondhand smoke is a complex mixture of thousands of gases
and particulate matter emitted by the combustion of tobacco
products and from smoke exhaled by those smoking.

SECONDHAND SMOKING EFFECTS
Secondhand smoke was declared to be carcinogenic. Health
effects associated with exposure to Secondhand smoke have
been well documented and include lung cancer, lower
respiratory tract infections, asthma, cardiovascular disease,
eye and nasal irritation and low birth weight in babies of
nonsmokers.

SECONDHAND SMOKING EFFECTS
If someone in your house or restaurant or office or
anywhere around you smokes, you are smoking, too.
You, too, can get lung cancer and the other diseases now
known to be associated with smoking.
And you, too, are running the same increased risks to
become sick and also, incidentally, to die.

WHAT ARE LEGISLATIVE SMOKING BANS?
Legislative Smoking bans (or smoke-free laws) are public
policies, including criminal laws and occupational safety and
health regulations, which prohibit tobacco
smoking in workplaces and other public spaces.

SMOKING BANS IN LEBANON
According to Law number 174: As of 3 September 2012,
smoking has been prohibited in enclosed public places
such as restaurants, cafes, and hotel. Anybody violating this
ban will be charged with a fine of over 100$, and the
restaurant, the cafe or the hotel will be charged with a fine
between 1300$ and 4000$.

SMOKING BANS IN LEBANON
The anti-tobacco legislation has faced the criticism of the
associations of restaurants and hotels that have called for
amending it. They argue that it would cut business and drive some
establishments to bankruptcy.
The association has called for excluding entertainment businesses
from the ban, including pubs, nightclubs and nargileh cafes and
has asked that indoor smoking be allowed in venues with proper
ventilation and age restrictions.
