Background Information
Middle school (6-8) | 900 students | 24% Free & Reduced Lunch
~1/3 of students use parent purchased laptops
Each interdisciplinary team has a set of 30 district-owned laptops
2 traditional computer labs
Not quite a 1:1 school, but fairly close
SMART Board in each classroom
Document camera in each classroom
Video projector in each classroom
We are in our 4th year with the SMART Boards
Questions we often receive

How do I get the staff to “buy‐in” to technology 
             use in the classroom?

 What can I do as building leader to model and 
             promote technology?

    What kind of results do you see with the 
           technology integration?
How do I get the staff to “buy‐in” to technology 
             use in the classroom?
Clearly, people have embraced and place 
value on technology in their personal life, 
  so why not on their professional life? 



    Not only do we have a professional 
obligation, but we have a moral obligation.
 Anything less, is educational malpractice. 
What can I do as building leader to model 
         and promote technology?
   You have a significant, if not the most important, role as building principal in 
promoting, modeling, and cultivating a learning community embedded with 
digital opportunities. Leaders must have tech awareness!


  Technology integration in the classroom should be the norm and not the 
exception.


  Let teachers know that you have high expectations and are not afraid to 
engage in conversation when those expectations are not met. 
What can I do as building leader to model 
        and promote technology?
   The principal must model this ‘digital’ attitude by making innovative 
technologies a standing agenda item at staff meetings, and allowing teachers 
to share best practice ideas and strategies related to digital learning. 


   Kids eat, breathe, and sleep in a digital world. Your world may look 
different. But here’s one thing I know for sure – the kids won’t be joining your 
world, so you might as well join their world. It’s an obligation.

• Learning occurs, not just “work”.
• 1:1 allows students to discover different
  possibilities not just during school hours,
  but also at home and in their spare time.

Final Notes:
• Remember to find what works for you.
• Students get frustrated, it is your job now
  to eliminate the difficulties
• Computers are not going anywhere, so get
  use to it
• Be flexible and do not give up.
• It’s worth it if it helps one student.

Background Information Middle school (6-8) | 900 students | 24% Free & Reduced Lunch ~1/3 of students use parent purchased laptops Each interdisciplinary team has a set of 30 district-owned laptops 2 traditional computer labs Not quite a 1:1 school, but fairly close SMART Board in each classroom Document camera in each classroom Video projector in each classroom We are in our 4th year with the SMART Boards
  • 8. Questions we often receive How do I get the staff to “buy‐in” to technology  use in the classroom? What can I do as building leader to model and  promote technology? What kind of results do you see with the  technology integration?
  • 10. Clearly, people have embraced and place  value on technology in their personal life,  so why not on their professional life?  Not only do we have a professional  obligation, but we have a moral obligation. Anything less, is educational malpractice. 
  • 11. What can I do as building leader to model  and promote technology? You have a significant, if not the most important, role as building principal in  promoting, modeling, and cultivating a learning community embedded with  digital opportunities. Leaders must have tech awareness! Technology integration in the classroom should be the norm and not the  exception. Let teachers know that you have high expectations and are not afraid to  engage in conversation when those expectations are not met. 
  • 12. What can I do as building leader to model  and promote technology? The principal must model this ‘digital’ attitude by making innovative  technologies a standing agenda item at staff meetings, and allowing teachers  to share best practice ideas and strategies related to digital learning.  Kids eat, breathe, and sleep in a digital world. Your world may look  different. But here’s one thing I know for sure – the kids won’t be joining your  world, so you might as well join their world. It’s an obligation.
  • 13. What kind of results do you see with the  technology integration? Teacher Survey Instructional advantages you have noticed by incorporating the SMART Board into your classroom Students more engaged, interested and excited Great for formative assessments  Students enjoy demonstrating concepts and more motivated to participate It’s like having “Virtual Manipulatives”  Increasing interaction between teacher and students Relevant to today’s learner – Digital Native teaching and learning Allows for more differentiation in the classroom Shortened distance between response and feedback It has helped me become a better teacher Increased test scores
  • 14. What kind of results do you see with the  technology integration? Teacher Survey In your opinion, how has the SMART Board enhanced student learning  in your classroom? More student engagement when lessons are interactive Increases class participation, student interest and motivation Innumerable lessons – do things I could not do before  Made it fun to collaborate with colleagues to find new ways of teaching Enables students to see real world application and make a greater impact Can interact with computer without sitting behind keyboard or desk Great for formative assessments | increases achievement Examples used can be more elaborate and can be saved to reuse later
