This document summarizes activities completed by students in the AL-Bairaq program exploring smart sensors. The activities included evading a motion detector, touring different sensors, making a microphone using PVDF film, exploring the piezoelectric effect by building a polymer model and testing voltage responses, and measuring piezoelectric and pyroelectric responses. The students also designed a coin counter using piezoelectricity and proposed an insect killer product idea using a motion sensor and bay leaves extract spray to safely eliminate insects from homes. The document outlines the program's introduction, activities, design project, product idea, and conclusions.

3. Introduction
• A smart sensor is a device takes input from
the physical environment and uses built-in
compute resources to perform predefined
upon detection of specific input and then
process data before passing it on.

4. Activity 1
Evading motion detection
After trying to evade the motion detector, we noticed that the
range of detection is a cone shape and at a distance of
approximately 30 feet.
· Also we found out that the stimulus is the change in infrared
radiation as we tried to move boiling water and ice in front of the
motion detector.

5. Activity 2
Taking a Tour of Some Sensors
In this activity we explored lots of types of smart sensors and we found
out that each smart sensor has a different stimulus and a different
response

6. Activity 3
Making a microphone
we made a microphone using two different types of PVDF, rigid and flexible.
And we tested it to check which type respond better to scratching, flicking,
blowing and talking.
Conclusion : Both films respond better to scratching and flicking than talking and blowing.
When we added a substrate we noticed the difference on talking, because it was enhanced
by the larger surface area of the substrate.

7. Activity 4
Exploring the piezo effect: the inside
story
we explored what is the monomer of the PVDF which is C2F2H2 and we
build the monomer and the polymer as well using the modeling kit.

We noticed how heat
can cause the PVDF

9. Design project
Designing a coin counter
we used the piezoelectricity of the PVDF to design a coin counter, by dropping
different coins with different masses and realized that every mass gives a different
voltage,
Then we draw a graph from our results.
We tried to find out the mass of an unknown coin from its voltage and it worked.

10. Insects killer
product idea
• Our project is a device that senses insects ,
sprays bay leaves extract to kill them In order
to ensures Qatar houses are free of them.
• What characterizes our project is that the
ingredient do not harm health and has no
unpleasant odor and the design which we had
done it you can put it anywhere unnoticed
because of its size and shape.

Hypothesis
• Can we eliminate insects using sensors to ensure that
Qatar houses are clean and healthy? How we use
the sensors in the elimination of insects.
• Several Research experiments showed that bay
leaves can kill insects without affecting the health so
we though that if we use it as a base to make a smart
sensor system that kill insects it will be a successful
idea.

• Tubes with small holes through them that spray
bay leaves extract to kill Insects when the sensor
detect them.
• It will be like small flexible pipes to put it
anywhere you want .

• Qatar will be important to the
community because it keeps hygiene and
health.

Recommendations
• We recommend more research to be done
about our project to improve it in the future
• The difficulties that we faced was to make an
insect killer that do not hurt our health, and
how to design a model that does not to affect
the house decoration.

15. Conclusions
we learned a lot from our experience in Albairaq
and we were able to try to find an idea that
benefit our community and makes it a better
place.
