Problem Summary
India has 100,087 km (62,191 mil) of national highways (NH) connecting all the major cities
and state capitals. National highways comprise 1.7% of India's total road network, but carry
about40% of road traffic. There are almost 273 tolls as per the NHAI site. Along with that there
are many other toll plazas in remote areas where toll is collected manually, with printed slips.
To try and untangle the mess, we need to start from the toll plazas.
The major problem of traffic congestion is due to the following reasons:
a) Need of Exact Change for an absurd amount.
b) The 'Special Status' arguments holding up traffic.
c) Malfunctioning systems.
d) Changeover of staff, taking two minutes to log off and log in as per the attendant and
balancing cash.
e) Drivers chatting with attendants too.
f) Manual collection of tolls (Pilferage).
To overcome with all these issues we are designing an embedded system to reduce the problem
of traffic congestion at toll plazas.

Solution Summary
The above discussed problems inspire us to look for a smart solution which is most
efficient, less costly, easy to maintain, avoid the traffic at the toll plaza so that the
economic loss which takes place in terms of fuel wastage can be reduced. So we are going
to develop a Smart E-Toll Plaza System.
We are making an embedded system to reduce the problem of traffic congestion at Toll
Plazas by creating an E-TOLL SYSTEM in which we will scan the QR code using QR
scanner. In this system we will design a mobile application (Android and IOS based)
which will generate the QR code by selecting the source and destination. The path
between source and destination can be selected based on two criteria: number of toll
booths between source and destination or the time and distance (Kms). Based on the
selected criteria the amount will be deducted from the respective account. The generated
QR code can be presented on a paper or in the form of 4 x 4 matrix keypad or else QR
code can be scanned directly from mobile also. The scanned QR code from the scanner
will help to open the barrier by checking for the payment done for the respective vehicle
on the registered path.
Technical Features:
 System is using the geolocation map which will help the user to select the most
appropriate way for his/her journey.
 The system is providing an android and IOS software mobile application.
 The system will provide a QR code as a ticket for the journey which will be
scanned by the QR scanner at the e-toll plaza.
 At the toll plaza QR scanner will scan the QR code and allow the vehicle to pass
without any delay.
 System is using a digital 4 x 4 matrix keypad for representing the QR code and also
using the LPC2148 (ARM based board) microcontroller for increasing the speed of
operation.
Power Riots Page 1 of 10 #MRT2
Smart Features:
 System will help the user in finding the minimum distance path.
 Use of QR code system provides fast readability and greater storage capacity
compared to standard UPC barcodes. And also a QR code uses four
 Standardized encoding modes (numeric, alphanumeric, byte/binary, and kanji) to
efficiently store data.
 System will store the information of total number of vehicles running on the street
per day. This will help in finding the average traffic on the respective path and will
help in reducing the crime.
 System saves both the time and fuel by avoiding the manual controlling of the toll
plaza.
 The data base management of smart E-Toll plaza is very easy as it is storing only
the useful information of vehicle and respective person.
Technology Stack

1. LPC2148 (ARM7 based MCU):-
Arm7 is a group of 32 bit RISC machine. ARM processor cores are
licensed by ARM HOLDINGS for MCU use. LPC2148 is the widely
used IC from ARM-7 family. It is manufactured by Philips and it is
pre-loaded with many inbuilt peripherals making it more efficient
and a reliable option for the beginners as well as high end application
developer.
2. QR code scanner:-
QR code is the trademark for a type of matrix barcode(or 2D
barcode) first designed for the automotive industry in Japan. The QR
code scanner can read any QR code whether printed on a paper or
read from a screen.
3. Voltage Regulator:-
The function of the Voltage Regulator to maintain constant voltage
and power line conditioning to the equipment load under a wide
variety of conditions, even when the utility input voltage, frequency
or system load vary widely.
4. Dot-Matrix Display:-
The display consists of a dot matrix of lights or mechanical
Indicators arranged in a square shape configuration such
that by switching on or off selected lights, text or graphics
can be displayed. A dot matrix controller converts instructions
from a processor into signals which turns on or off lights in the
matrix so that the required display is produced.

Use Case
In this process the route will be decided by the user on the basis of two criteria which helps the
user to select the appropriate path. These are as follows: Number of toll booth arriving in the
path or distance between the source and destination. Every toll booth has a fixed amount which
is fetched by the road transport ministry from the user in form of toll tax.
The application which is generating the QR code will fetch the information like type of vehicle,
total toll tax for single side, and the user bank information. All these data’s are managed by the
data base management centre.
A QR scanner located at the toll plaza will scan the QR code and will allow the vehicle to pass
from that toll plazas.

Show Stopper
 This E-Toll system will be easy to use as there will be one compatible mobile
application through which all the payment can be done.
 The set-up cost for the whole system will be very low.
 Low maintenance is required.
 Data Base Management complexity will be low.
 Providing easy solution for saving fuel loss of vehicle at toll booth and also reducing
environment pollution.
 Also providing the information about daily vehicle load on the highways.
Power Riots Page 1 of 10 #MRT2
Service Dependencies
 Our E-Toll system is dependent upon the Google based Location with the help of Google
maps.
 Customers have smart phone with a specific application through which all the payment
can be done.
 QR code should be placed in front of the vehicle in case of paper print.
 Database management is quite difficult.
