This document provides deadlines and requirements for students completing a small scale research project. It outlines expectations such as maintaining an organized research folder, completing a project proposal form by November 13th describing the research topic and context, and watching related films by the same date while taking notes. Students are expected to conduct both primary research like interviews and surveys by November 27th as well as secondary research from books, articles, and websites by logging their findings. An annotated catalogue of research materials is due December 4th, with students assigning relevance ratings to sources. A presentation script is to be formed by December 11th and further developed by December 18th, integrating references to research materials.

DEADLINE Fri 6 th Nov UPDATE BLOGS – Everyone has to use a blog, use it as a tool to collate/ organise ideas, discuss research done so far, or discuss any problems you’re facing, use it as a research diary, and not some place to post research, as a folder will be more useful. RESEARCH FOLDER – You need to have an organised research folder or some sort of box file were you keep written notes, articles, photocopies and internet research. This may be asked for by the external moderator.

DEADLINE Fri 13 th Nov PROJECT PROPOSAL FORM – Filled in a ready to be set off to exam board The Project Proposal Form asks you to fill in the following: Area of investigation - this is the subject of your research and may be written as a statement (Guy. Ritchie's representation of the gangster) or, if it helps focus your work, as a question (How does RocknRolla develop Guy Ritchie's interest in the representation of the gangster?), though questions tend to direct a project to predetermined answers, whereas statements tend to lead to findings. Project context - the research project is carried out in relation to one of a predetermined set of contexts: star/performer, genre, auteur, social, political and cultural studies, gender issues, ethnicity, institution or technology. Focus film and related films - you are expected to anchor the project on one film that will be the focus of the research, and in doing so make extensive reference to it. You should also list at least two other films you expect to reference as part of the project. Research resources - not necessarily the research itself (as this form should begin your project), but a range of places you will go to obtain research (e.g. specific named libraries, books, magazines, archives, websites, people), Tutor comment - which is where your tutor has the opportunity to identify his or her thoughts on and support for your project. It is possible that a tutor may identify issues of concern that you have discussed with him or her in order to seek moderator advice.

DEADLINE Fri 13 th Nov WATCH FILMS - Make notes pick out useful sequences (see pg 13 of booklet) In order to make a focus film work for the project you could approach it by: Identifying key scenes within it - ones that are powerful, provoke emotion or are essential for moving the plot forward. Identifying the narrative structure of the film, and any significant narrative devices used to tell the story. Listing the key characters and their relationship to the area of investigation. Listing an important scene against each of these characters in which the area of investigation is prominent. Identifying the significant micro elements (cinematography, m/se-en-scene, performance, editing and sound) that have some bearing on the area of investigation. Listing any messages and values that are expressed in or by the film (you may want to identify where these appear). In this way you build up useful in-depth knowledge of the film with which to compare other related films, and with which to illustrate any significant points arising from your research.

DEADLINE Fri 4 th Dec ANNOTATED CATALOGUE See pgs16-18 of booklet for assistance When commenting on each item you should try (in five lines or fewer) to identify the following: How the item relates to the area of investigation. What value the item has offered the project. The nature and reliability of its source. How it compares to other items. The basis for its inclusion. At the end of the Catalogue you should offer a brief paragraph identifying some items that were not selected for inclusion, and a rationale as to why this de­selection occurred.

8. DEADLINE Fri 4 th Dec ANNOTATED CATALOGUE See pgs16-18 of booklet for assistance You need to organise you research findings to be able to decide what to include in your catalogue of research. Task: Using four colours; colour code your research finding notes. (Putting a coloured dot in the corner of each of your completed summary sheets). Each of the four colours will represent one of the following: Focused on area of investigation (red) Focused on project context (blue) Useful background (green) Interesting but not well related. (purple) Then, you should give a number to each of the pages within each colour group – 1 being the most useful piece within the colour group and so on. Now, you should be able to sort through all of your research and choose the most suitable items for your catalogue.

DEADLINE Fri 11 th Dec PRESENTATION SCRIPT – CHECK UP See pgs19-21 of booklet for guidance At this time I will expect to see the formation of a presentation script you should have clear ideas of what you want to present and what you want to include although the presentation script will not be fully realised.

DEADLINE Fri 18 th Dec PRESENTATION SCRIPT The Presentation Script should be in a format suited to a presentation, and may: be in note form be bulleted or numbered be short pieces of prose with reference to presentation material connecting them use headings and subheadings. It will clearly indicate where a piece of material will be inserted and will make attempts to ensure that the material used in the presentation is referenced and addressed by the script. Catalogue items referenced or used in the presentation should be indicated by Catalogue Item number. An essay format is not appropriate to this task, and will not attract the rewards that more innovative approaches will benefit from.
