The Fundamental Management Programme (FMP) is a 12-month program offered over two semesters by the Unisa Graduate School of Business Leadership. The FMP aims to provide entry-level managers with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in key management areas like financial management, labor relations, leadership, and health and safety. Modules cover topics such as accounting, employee involvement, and activity planning. Students are assessed through assignments, exams, and must obtain an overall average of 50% to receive an FMP Certificate on completion of the program. The program is aimed at supervisors, foremen, small business managers and those seeking management skills for career advancement.

The Information and Communication Technologies are more and present-day in scientific production, which is due to technological progress and intensive use of available technologies. The Fundamental Management Programme (FMP) aims to equip
entry-level managers with theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills that
enable them to handle fundamental management aspects and to be
team leaders in rapidly changing organisations.
First-level managers such as supervisors, foremen and superintendents, as
well as small business managers, enrol in the FMP to gain the management
background necessary for development and promotion. Some students
also use the FMP as a bridging education before embarking on more
advanced management development programmes.

The programme is presented over two semesters:

SEMESTER 1
MODULE 1: The management process
Introduces the fundamentals of management. Through professional
tuition, students develop a results-oriented approach which is relevant
to most situations encountered in general management.

MODULE 2: Introduction to financial management
Students become acquainted with the function of financial management
in an organisation. The module also demonstrates the application of certain
financial techniques that help the organisation achieve its goals.

· Budgeting and control
MODULE 3: Labour and employee relations
Highlights important features of labour law and industrial relations in
South Africa, and equips students to handle fundamental aspects of
employee relations at shop-floor level.

· Employee involvement and participation
· Performance management

Provides a practical introduction to the essentials of organisational
behaviour, with emphasis on effective leadership in a South African context.

MODULE 2: Activity planning and control
Students acquire techniques and skills that enable them to execute

MODULE 3: Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)
Students will be introduced to the legal framework that governs the OHS in
business as well as the ethical implications associated with this. Understanding
the underlying elements and their applications will equip students with the
skills to manage and support the OHS systems in their organisations.

ASSESSMENT
Formative assessment (assignments)
In each module, two syndicate group assignments are submitted for
evaluation. These count towards a year mark which forms part of the
final evaluation of the student.
Summative assessment (examinations)
An open-book, 2 hour exam will be written. A sub-minimum of
40% must be obtained in the exam for the module and a final,
weighted average mark of at least 50% for the whole module,
where the weights for the final marks are as follows:
· Examination mark 60%
· Year mark 40%
On the successful completion of the programme, students will receive
the Fundamental Management Programme (FMP) Certificate from the
Unisa Graduate School of Business Leadership (SBL), an internationally
respected educational institution.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
· Applicants must have a Senior Certificate and at least three
years’ work experience.
· Admission is granted on the understanding that students are able to
attend syndicate group meetings and the compulsory study schools
at the SBL in Midrand.
· Apply well in advance to ensure admission. The application form is
available in this brochure or visit the SBL website: www.sblunisa.ac.za.
A clear photocopy of the form can be used.
