QUALIFICATION OVERVIEW
This 1-year, NQF Level 7 Diploma ofers a solid
grounding in the theory and practice of business
project management principles and guidelines.
QUALIFICATION DURATION
This is a 1-year, part-time qualiication, delivered
online with one inal exam at centres throughout
South Africa.
QUALIFICATION APPROVAL
Once you have successfully completed
the qualiication, you’ll receive an accredited
UCT Diploma.
ADMISSIONS CRITERIA
- You must have experience in managing projects,
or experience as an active team member directly
involved in projects.
- These projects should preferably be:
Medium to large: a minimum of 10 team
members or stakeholders
Relatively recent: Within the last 2-3
years, or a current project, but not a
future-dated project.
- Are you currently registered for another degree?
According to CHE, you cannot be registered for
two degrees at the same time.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Registration, and therefore access to the Virtual
Learning Environment, will be withheld until your
minimum inancial obligation has been met.
If payment is not received on or before the due date, a
once-of late payment fee of 10% of the unpaid amount
will be charged. A R500 admin fee will be charged on all
cancellations.

Project management skills are among the most
transferable in today’s competitive job market.
Project managers, whether they have the oicial title
or not, are needed across the business sector, and
the discipline in itself is fundamental to the economy.
As “business projects” are found across numerous
industries - including (but not limited to) events,
IT, government, service, NGOs, inancial, retail,
commercial, oil, and telecommunications - students of
project management have versatile opportunities to
build a career that spans a wide variety of industries.
LEVEL OF STUDY
Advanced Diplomas are focussed qualiications for
graduates aimed at advancing specialised knowledge
in a particular career-focussed area. They are rated as
NQF Level 7, which means that all course content is at
3rd year undergraduate level or higher.
This Advanced Diploma is for individuals with an
undergraduate degree or equivalent who want to
take their project management competencies to an
advanced level, and have current experience working
as a line manager, project manager, or a project team
member who is moving into a project management
role in the near future.

QUALIFICATION OUTCOMES
On successful completion of this qualiication, students will be able to:
Apply the hard skills of project management - which include the methodologies, processes, tools,
techniques and standards that make up the various project management bodies of knowledge - in a
variety of theoretical contexts.
Analyse the soft skills required for efective people management within a business project context,
speciically around managing teams and team members.
Analyse the context in which a selected business project is situated.
Plan, design and construct the various project artefacts required to execute a project.
Assess the impact of Strategic Project Management on a business organisation.

QUALIFICATION
STRUCTURE
The qualiication consists of the following four courses:
COURSE 1
FOUNDATIONS OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Course 1 covers the hard skills required for managing a business
project efectively. Hard skills include processes, tools and
techniques for successful project management.
ON COMPLETION OF THIS COURSE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
• Deine what constitutes a business project and identify how this
its into the project’s business and social environments.
• Discuss the factors necessary for a business project to be
successful.
• Distinguish the diferent elements of a project and project plan
in a variety of business-related case studies and scenarios.
• Explain how to execute, monitor and control, and implement the
project plan, as well as close the project.
COURSE 2
MANAGING PEOPLE IN BUSINESS PROJECTS
This course covers the all-important and often neglected soft skills
required for efective project management. Soft skills are needed
for efective self, project team, and stakeholder management, as
well as to ensure that project communication and relationships run
smoothly.
ON COMPLETION OF THIS COURSE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
• Analyse the crucial skills needed for efective general
management, including delegation, authority, trust,
responsibility, and accountability, along with planning,
organising, and controlling.
• Identify the key competencies required of successful project
managers.
• Describe the diferences between leadership and management
as applied to project management.
• Demonstrate how the concepts of emotional intelligence,
personality assessment, team development, productivity, and
motivation can be used to manage project teams.
• Discuss the ethical challenges facing project managers.

COURSE 3
BUILDING THE PROJECT PLAN
Course 3 covers the “how” of managing projects. In this highly
practical and applied course, students will follow a step-by-step
approach to building their own project plan for their own organisation
using the knowledge and skills gained in Courses 1 and 2.
ON COMPLETION OF THIS COURSE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
• Analyse the components of the business case for a project.
• Create a project charter for a speciic business project.
• Revise the components of a typical project plan.
• Build the various planning artefacts that are required to execute
a project, and that constitute the project plan.
COURSE 4
STRATEGIC PROJECT MANAGEMENT
This course focuses on the efectiveness of projects in business
at a strategic level, and looks at how businesses can use project
management to set themselves apart from the competition.
ON COMPLETION OF THIS COURSE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
• Assess how Strategic Project Management can enable agility and
create competitive advantage in organisations.
• Describe the relationship between Strategic Project Management
and Organisational Change Management.
• Assess the value proposition of using projects in organisations.
• Describe the processes and organisational challenges associated
with Strategic Project Management.
• Assess the importance and advantages of Beneits Realisation
Management.
• Develop a strategy for preparing for the inal examination.

Individuals with existing qualiications can fast-track their career through this Advanced Diploma. Those
without formal qualiications of any kind, but with the prerequisite experience, will also be given the
opportunity to enhance their skills and open new doors.
Although applicants from other areas, such as construction and engineering, will be accepted if they
qualify, the focus of this qualiication is on the business sector, and some of the specialised elements from
construction and engineering projects will not be covered.
Experienced managers who require project management skills to enhance their existing abilities would
also beneit from this qualiication, provided they have access to a current or historical business project for
reference and assessment throughout the qualiication.

REQUIREMENTS
The following application requirements apply to the Advanced
Diploma in Business Project Management:
QUALIFICATIONS
• Applicants should have an an undergraduate degree or
equivalent in any ield of study from UCT or an equivalent
tertiary educational institution.
• Suitable work experience in a business setting and/or working
as a project manager or business manager is an important
consideration for selection.
• A student wishing to apply for the diploma with qualiications
other than an undergraduate degree or equivalent will need to
satisfy the Senate that his/her qualiication and/or experience
are an adequate preparation for the work prescribed in the
course.
INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS
International applicants with a foreign qualiication (a diploma
or degree that is not recognised by a South African tertiary
institution), are required to obtain a SAQA Certiicate of
Evaluation.
It is the responsibility of the applicant to approach SAQA
directly and obtain the Certiicate of Evaluation, proving their
international qualiication is recognised and meets the admission
requirements for entry on to the Advanced Diploma in Business
Project Management.

DOCUMENTATION
• All applicants are required to submit a 2-page CV detailing
relevant work experience and/or extracurricular involvement
and a letter of motivation.
• Applicants with undergraduate degrees or diplomas from
institutions other than UCT are required to submit copies
of their full oicial academic transcripts to date (stating proof
of graduation). NB: Degree certiicates alone are not suicient.
RESOURCES
• Students must have a current email account, access to a computer,
a steady internet connection (recommended: 1MB line or faster), as
well as be able to read documents in Adobe PDF and use Microsoft
Word and Microsoft Excel to create documents, spreadsheets
and presentations. Students will need access to MS Project
or alternative scheduling software that meet the qualiication
requirements; students without access will be catered for.
• Students will be required to use various online tools and possess
a good level of computer and internet literacy.
• Students require suicient bandwidth and data to watch videos,
attend live tutorials, download content, and upload assignments
throughout the qualiication.
Due to the popularity of the qualiication, early application backed
by a solid academic and professional record will be advantageous.

MEET YOUR COURSE CONVENOR
PROFESSOR ULRIKE RIVETT
Professor Ulrike Rivett holds an undergraduate degree from the
University of Munich, Germany, and a PhD from the University
of Cape Town. She has worked for 16 years in the UCT Department
of Civil Engineering and the Department of Information Systems,
and leads the iCOMMS research team, which focuses on
understanding the use of ICTs for the beneit of society. She has
also taught in the areas of information systems, project management,
design thinking and engineering.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR
LEARNING
The Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Evaluation is designed to assess those students who do not have
an undergraduate degree or equivalent, but who have at least 3 years of relevant managerial experience.
The Evaluation ofers applicants an opportunity to demonstrate that their industry experience has suiciently
prepared them for this level of study.
Those eligible for RPL will be required to complete a two-week evaluation, presented entirely online.

YOUR MOTIVATIONAL LETTER
Your application alone does not grant you admission to this qualiication. Your application is assessed
by a Committee appointed by the University, and your Motivational Letter is a crucial component of this
assessment.
Owing to the complexity and scope of this Diploma, previous experience in project management is preferred.
If you lack the relevant experience but use your Motivational Letter to explain why you believe you should be
granted access to this qualiication, the Committee will take your motivation under consideration.

WHAT NOT TO INCLUDE:
Plagiarism is not tolerated by the University. Any applicant thought to be using a generic Motivational Letter
template will not be considered for admission onto the qualiication.

QUALIFICATION DELIVERY
The qualiication is delivered through the GetSmarter Learning website. To ensure that you are able to maintain
a work-life balance while completing the qualiication, the content for each of the four courses is divided into
manageable weekly modules. On each Wednesday of the 1-year qualiication, you will receive one module to
complete in your own time and at your own pace throughout the week (incremental deadlines may apply).
Modules vary in composition, depending on the best method of delivery for each module’s unique content, and
can include the following components:
A typical week on this intensive qualiication will entail a commitment of approximately 20 hours.
The Head Tutor will provide you with academic support through the online discussion forum for the duration of
the qualiication. A designated Course Coach will also be available via email and telephone to provide you with
administrative support.

1. ASSESSMENT AND AWARD
OF THE DIPLOMA
The qualiication is based on four intensive, part-time, distance
courses comprising the four major topics of project management. Each
of the courses has a duration of 12 weeks. The inal contact-based
examination, which takes place at the end of Course 4, will be written
at approved exam centres.
The diploma does not follow the UCT academic calendar and runs
continuously over the 12-month duration. Students are required to
achieve at least 50% in each course and a subminimum of 50% in the
Course 4 exam in order to attain the qualiication.
2. QUALIFICATION APPROVAL
This qualiication is accredited by the University of Cape Town.
You will receive a diploma issued by the University once you have
successfully completed the qualiication. The qualiication is developed
and presented by the University of Cape Town in partnership with
GetSmarter. GetSmarter is the irst and only entirely online education
company to be accredited by any SETA (Sector Education and Training
Authority) as a provider of education in South Africa. Institutional

  • 2. A SUMMARY OF THE ESSENTIALS QUALIFICATION OVERVIEW This 1-year, NQF Level 7 Diploma ofers a solid grounding in the theory and practice of business project management principles and guidelines. QUALIFICATION DURATION This is a 1-year, part-time qualiication, delivered online with one inal exam at centres throughout South Africa. QUALIFICATION APPROVAL Once you have successfully completed the qualiication, you’ll receive an accredited UCT Diploma. ADMISSIONS CRITERIA - You must have experience in managing projects, or experience as an active team member directly involved in projects. - These projects should preferably be: Medium to large: a minimum of 10 team members or stakeholders Relatively recent: Within the last 2-3 years, or a current project, but not a future-dated project. - Are you currently registered for another degree? According to CHE, you cannot be registered for two degrees at the same time. IMPORTANT INFORMATION Registration, and therefore access to the Virtual Learning Environment, will be withheld until your minimum inancial obligation has been met. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Project management skills are among the most transferable in today’s competitive job market. Project managers, whether they have the oicial title or not, are needed across the business sector, and the discipline in itself is fundamental to the economy. As “business projects” are found across numerous industries - including (but not limited to) events, IT, government, service, NGOs, inancial, retail, commercial, oil, and telecommunications - students of project management have versatile opportunities to build a career that spans a wide variety of industries. LEVEL OF STUDY Advanced Diplomas are focussed qualiications for graduates aimed at advancing specialised knowledge in a particular career-focussed area. They are rated as NQF Level 7, which means that all course content is at 3rd year undergraduate level or higher. This Advanced Diploma is for individuals with an undergraduate degree or equivalent who want to take their project management competencies to an advanced level, and have current experience working as a line manager, project manager, or a project team member who is moving into a project management role in the near future.   • 4. - 4 - - 4 - QUALIFICATION OUTCOMES On successful completion of this qualiication, students will be able to: Apply the hard skills of project management - which include the methodologies, processes, tools, techniques and standards that make up the various project management bodies of knowledge - in a variety of theoretical contexts. Analyse the soft skills required for efective people management within a business project context, speciically around managing teams and team members. Analyse the context in which a selected business project is situated. Plan, design and construct the various project artefacts required to execute a project. QUALIFICATION STRUCTURE The qualiication consists of the following four courses: COURSE 1 FOUNDATIONS OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT Course 1 covers the hard skills required for managing a business project efectively. Hard skills include processes, tools and techniques for successful project management. ON COMPLETION OF THIS COURSE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: • Deine what constitutes a business project and identify how this its into the project’s business and social environments. • Discuss the factors necessary for a business project to be successful. • Distinguish the diferent elements of a project and project plan in a variety of business-related case studies and scenarios. • Explain how to execute, monitor and control, and implement the project plan, as well as close the project. COURSE 2 MANAGING PEOPLE IN BUSINESS PROJECTS This course covers the all-important and often neglected soft skills required for efective project management. Soft skills are needed for efective self, project team, and stakeholder management, as well as to ensure that project communication and relationships run smoothly. ON COMPLETION OF THIS COURSE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: • Analyse the crucial skills needed for efective general management, including delegation, authority, trust, responsibility, and accountability, along with planning, organising, and controlling. • Identify the key competencies required of successful project managers. • Describe the diferences between leadership and management as applied to project management. • Demonstrate how the concepts of emotional intelligence, personality assessment, team development, productivity, and motivation can be used to manage project teams. • Discuss the ethical challenges facing project managers.   • 6. COURSE 3 BUILDING THE PROJECT PLAN Course 3 covers the “how” of managing projects. In this highly practical and applied course, students will follow a step-by-step approach to building their own project plan for their own organisation using the knowledge and skills gained in Courses 1 and 2. ON COMPLETION OF THIS COURSE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: • Analyse the components of the business case for a project. • Create a project charter for a speciic business project. • Revise the components of a typical project plan. • Build the various planning artefacts that are required to execute a project, and that constitute the project plan. COURSE 4 STRATEGIC PROJECT MANAGEMENT This course focuses on the efectiveness of projects in business at a strategic level, and looks at how businesses can use project management to set themselves apart from the competition. ON COMPLETION OF THIS COURSE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: • Assess how Strategic Project Management can enable agility and create competitive advantage in organisations. • Describe the relationship between Strategic Project Management and Organisational Change Management. • Assess the value proposition of using projects in organisations. • Describe the processes and organisational challenges associated with Strategic Project Management. • Assess the importance and advantages of Beneits Realisation Management. • Develop a strategy for preparing for the inal examination.   • 7. WHO SHOULD ATTEND? This qualiication is aimed at: Experienced managers working in business who require these competencies Students with a 3 year diploma may also be considered Individuals who hold an undergraduate degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline Individuals with experience working as project managers or within project management teams Individuals with existing qualiications can fast-track their career through this Advanced Diploma. Those without formal qualiications of any kind, but with the prerequisite experience, will also be given the opportunity to enhance their skills and open new doors. Although applicants from other areas, such as construction and engineering, will be accepted if they qualify, the focus of this qualiication is on the business sector, and some of the specialised elements from construction and engineering projects will not be covered. Experienced managers who require project management skills to enhance their existing abilities would also beneit from this qualiication, provided they have access to a current or historical business project for reference and assessment throughout the qualiication. APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN CLICK HERE TO APPLY APPLICATION AND ENTRY REQUIREMENTS The following application requirements apply to the Advanced Diploma in Business Project Management: QUALIFICATIONS • Applicants should have an an undergraduate degree or equivalent in any ield of study from UCT or an equivalent tertiary educational institution. • Suitable work experience in a business setting and/or working as a project manager or business manager is an important consideration for selection. • A student wishing to apply for the diploma with qualiications other than an undergraduate degree or equivalent will need to satisfy the Senate that his/her qualiication and/or experience are an adequate preparation for the work prescribed in the course. INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS International applicants with a foreign qualiication (a diploma or degree that is not recognised by a South African tertiary institution), are required to obtain a SAQA Certiicate of Evaluation. It is the responsibility of the applicant to approach SAQA directly and obtain the Certiicate of Evaluation, proving their international qualiication is recognised and meets the admission requirements for entry on to the Advanced Diploma in Business Project Management. DOWNLOAD DOCUMENTATION • All applicants are required to submit a 2-page CV detailing relevant work experience and/or extracurricular involvement and a letter of motivation. • Applicants with undergraduate degrees or diplomas from institutions other than UCT are required to submit copies of their full oicial academic transcripts to date (stating proof of graduation). NB: Degree certiicates alone are not suicient. RESOURCES • Students must have a current email account, access to a computer, a steady internet connection (recommended: 1MB line or faster), as well as be able to read documents in Adobe PDF and use Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel to create documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Students will need access to MS Project or alternative scheduling software that meet the qualiication requirements; students without access will be catered for. • Students will be required to use various online tools and possess a good level of computer and internet literacy. • Students require suicient bandwidth and data to watch videos, attend live tutorials, download content, and upload assignments throughout the qualiication. Due to the popularity of the qualiication, early application backed by a solid academic and professional record will be advantageous. MEET YOUR COURSE CONVENOR PROFESSOR ULRIKE RIVETT Professor Ulrike Rivett holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Munich, Germany, and a PhD from the University of Cape Town. She has worked for 16 years in the UCT Department of Civil Engineering and the Department of Information Systems, and leads the iCOMMS research team, which focuses on understanding the use of ICTs for the beneit of society. RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING The Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Evaluation is designed to assess those students who do not have an undergraduate degree or equivalent, but who have at least 3 years of relevant managerial experience. The Evaluation ofers applicants an opportunity to demonstrate that their industry experience has suiciently prepared them for this level of study. Those eligible for RPL will be required to complete a two-week evaluation, presented entirely online. FIND OUT MORE YOUR MOTIVATIONAL LETTER Your application alone does not grant you admission to this qualiication. Your application is assessed by a Committee appointed by the University, and your Motivational Letter is a crucial component of this assessment. Owing to the complexity and scope of this Diploma, previous experience in project management is preferred. If you lack the relevant experience but use your Motivational Letter to explain why you believe you should be granted access to this qualiication, the Committee will take your motivation under consideration.   • 11. QUALIFICATION DELIVERY The qualiication is delivered through the GetSmarter Learning website. To ensure that you are able to maintain a work-life balance while completing the qualiication, the content for each of the four courses is divided into manageable weekly modules. On each Wednesday of the 1-year qualiication, you will receive one module to complete in your own time and at your own pace throughout the week (incremental deadlines may apply). Modules vary in composition, depending on the best method of delivery for each module’s unique content, and can include the following components: A typical week on this intensive qualiication will entail a commitment of approximately 20 hours. The Head Tutor will provide you with academic support through the online discussion forum for the duration of the qualiication. A designated Course Coach will also be available via email and telephone to provide you with administrative support.   • 12. 1. ASSESSMENT AND AWARD OF THE DIPLOMA The qualiication is based on four intensive, part-time, distance courses comprising the four major topics of project management. Each of the courses has a duration of 12 weeks. The inal contact-based examination, which takes place at the end of Course 4, will be written at approved exam centres. The diploma does not follow the UCT academic calendar and runs continuously over the 12-month duration. Students are required to achieve at least 50% in each course and a subminimum of 50% in the Course 4 exam in order to attain the qualiication. 2. QUALIFICATION APPROVAL This qualiication is accredited by the University of Cape Town. You will receive a diploma issued by the University once you have successfully completed the qualiication. The qualiication is developed and presented by the University of Cape Town in partnership with GetSmarter.
