Until now, augmented reality has so far been mostly a sci-fi vision that overlays visual information to what we see in the physical world. It’s widely perceived as a “cool and interesting feature” for brands and advertising, but doesn’t have much practicality yet. To harness the real power of AR, which includes geolocation, image recognition, we believe that a more utilitarian visual search would be next.
To design for such possibilities, we begin to question even the fundamental basis of AR. For example, what would AR become beyond a rich visual layer? Will this change people’s motivation and behavior to use AR? How can we redefine AR to be a tool to give augmented information on objects? And how we can speculate its usage in the future?
Animation can explain behaviours better than thousand of words that’s why interaction designer should learn from motion designer.
Technological advances have allowed, in the last few years, a big step forward in the dynamic behaviors and interactions patterns that we used to do with software in the past. Motion is one of the key element of this change but how can we imagine & sketch the way something feels & reacts? Starting from the basic of motion design, we’ll discover a set of “standard” motion patterns and how we can sketch & use them in a design project to increase affordance, to simplify complex interactions and to give a new dynamic brand identity to our products.

He is currently part of a team developing a sculptural reflection of energy and resource flows in what is being heralded as the world`s greenest office building. His work for groups ranging from the Hayden Planetarium and the Connecticut Science Center to Sony and HBO has resulted in award-winning public interactive experiences.
Jeff teaches at NYU`s graduate Interactive Telecommunications Program, where he has a residency to develop video curricula supporting physical computing and energy. His novel musical instruments and kinetic sound sculptures have been performed on and exhibited internationally, and he is the co-inventor of an electronic wind instrument based on the Japanese shakuhachi (US patent #7723605).
The next ten years of technology will see many of Ray Kurzweil`s predictions come alive: Embedded, invisible, unwired electricity and internet-based interactions will drive every aspect of our lived environment. The physical and digital worlds are merging, powered by incredible changes in computing, universal connectivity as well as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning. This pending wave is certain to change every aspect of our human-computer interaction.
Major technological leaps present interesting design and UX challenges and require a wholesale shift in perspective by designing for the as-yet unknown. Screens, keyboards, and mouse dominated yesterday and today. Tomorrow, these systems will be initiated, controlled, and tracked through location and environment, semantic context, a wave of the arm, a blink of an eye, a directed gaze, a heartbeat, a crowd-driven trend, even a brainwave.
Whole new approaches and design systems need to be considered for what the next wave of products do, what they look and feel like, and how they can be more meaningful, useful, relevant, and intuitive.

Augmented reality applications in manufacturing and maintenance Jeffrey Funk
These slides use concepts from my (Jeff Funk) course entitled analyzing hi-tech opportunities to show how augmented reality is becoming economically feasible for manufacturing and maintenance applications. Augmented reality adds useful information to a real-world image that is seen through head-mounted glasses or a tablet computer’s camera. Academic tests reveal that manufacturing and maintenance activities can be done more effectively when workers use augmented reality and many firms have begun using augmented reality.
Furthermore, continued improvements in display resolution and graphic processing speeds and the emergence of transparent displays will expand the use of AR. In particular, it takes several seconds for current devices to update the images that are overlaid on the real-world image, which confuses workers and slows them down. Improvements in graphic processors for tablet computers are reducing the time it takes for tablet computers to recognize and register objects and thus make the overlaid images look clear in the tablet’s display. While graphic processors in game consoles and desktop computers can easily handle this problem, graphic processors in mobile devices lag their game console and desktop computer counterparts by several years.
Technological advances have allowed, in the last few years, a big step forward in the dynamic behaviors and interactions patterns that we used to do on the web, in the past. Starting from understanding the rules of motion design and how people interact with it during the processes of interaction we'll discover through practical insights and examples what is "under the hood" and how to prototype and develop all this design patterns with a more integrated and efficient design to code workflow.

Frank Steinicke (Univ of Hamburg) Being Really Virtual - Virtual Reality in t...AugmentedWorldExpo
In order to gain a better understanding of how living in such a virtual environment (VE) would impact human beings, we conducted a self-experiment in which we exposed a single participant in an immersive VR setup for 24 hours (divided into repeated sessions of two hours VR exposure followed by ten minutes breaks), which is to our knowledge the longest documented use of an immersive VEs so far.
In my presentation I will talk about what we learned from the experiment. I will give an outlook of what VR will become in the next 15 years and what it means to be be really virtual.

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

7. “ Wizard of Oz Technique” ----------- Fake it before you build it. The aim is to experience interactive systems, before they are real, even before we have arrived at their final design . With the example of the Wizard, we see that we can conjure up systems that will let users have real and valid experiences, before the system exists in any normal sense of the word. The Wizard of Oz Technique involves making a working system, where the person using it is unaware that some or all of the system’s functions are actually being performed by a human operator, hidden somewhere “behind the screen.” ’ Generally the last thing that you should do when beginning to design an interactive system is write code’

14. It illustrates panning across a display. Unlike a desktop computer, where you use the scroll bars and scroll arrows to move the document on a stationary display, here you move the display over the surface of a stationary virtual document in a manner analogous to our camcorder example.
15. It illustrates how the behaviour of the Chameleon can be driven by its position over an object in the physical world, rather than some virtual document. In this case, the object is a map. But when coupled with the Chameleon , the paper map becomes a guide for browsing for more detail about its surface. So, for example, if you move the display over Winnipeg, Manitoba (where George is holding it), it might give you details about the city’s important role in the fur trade, or why it is the mosquito capital of Canada.
