NURUL ATIQAH 0325630 – NUR FARAHIYAH 0324416 – SALEHAH 0324559 – NATASYA JASMIN 0324222 – IMAN JEZDM
-The Clan Jetties are unique Chinese settlements that have been around since the 19th century.
- Located straight down from Lebuh Chulia (beside the Kapitan Kling Mosque) at PengkalanWeld
(Weld Quay)
- Along the wooden pier are villages on stilts that house the descendants of Chinese immigrants.
-There used to be seven jetties until one was demolished by fire and now six remain, with each
individual jetty named after their surname.
- Likely the most tourist-friendly is the Chew Jetty whose residents occupy the entire stretch of
jetty.
HISTORY
■ Initially, the area where the Clan Jetties now lie
was a char hionh (wood yard) littered with planks
and firewood.
■ After the construction of the Quay in 1882, the
waterfront was developed with short public
landing stages or jetties.
■ Settlements grew on these foundations and they
were used for the loading and unloading of goods
and for the mooring of sampans (boats).
■ Gradually, each jetty became identified and
dominated by certain clans and over time more
huts sprung up.
■ The Lims, Chews and Lees were directly involved
in harbour activities, offering their services as
boatmen in transporting cargo from the bigger
steamship to the shore. On the other hand, the
Tans,Yeohs and Koays were more involved in the
firewood trade and the making of charcoal. The
raw material for charcoal making comes from the
mangrove the line the shore which co-existed

no specific route for people to walk on, so you walk right by the roads and
shophouses, next to cars passing by. theres lots of cars during the weekend,
especially in the morning, as well as during the evening. Lots of tourists and
visitors visit the jetties during the morning until afternoon more instead of night.

Negative activities around
Air pollution
>smoking
Littering
Loitering
Loud noises
Smoking is considered a negativity
activity
Because of the smoke released is not
healthy for the people and also the
environment
It is noticed that people take their breaks by
smoking
You can see people loitering around hence this
cause foot traffic and people are pacing down.
One of the most disappointing activity here is the people litter and dispose
their rubbish on water. Hence when the tied is low, the rubbish is visible and
stench is strong
Promoting their merchadise
becomes also results in noise
polluting as they try to promote
they tend to raise their voice to
attract the tourists attraction
Motor boats also produce very loud
noises hence every now and then
you are able to hear motor noises
which makes people hard to listen
to one and another.
SWOT ANALYSIS
o AMAZING view in all Jetties
o Tourist vibes
o Lots of food and beverages and ice
cream shop as well as souvenirs shop
(mostly in CHEW)
o The residents are very welcoming and
friendly
o Outside the jetties, consist of many
other restaurants and shop lots for
tourist to take a break.
o Pedestrian circulation is not safe ( right
by the busy roads)
o Less resting area except for restaurants.
o The Jetties path or wooden planks has is
not safe in terms of no railings.
o Some jetties are smelly (bad sewage
system)
o Less signage to indicate where the jetties
are (getting lost is possible)
o Widen the wooden pathway
and railings for visitors safety
o Add in more public seatings for
people to rest other than in
shops.
o Add more boards in each
jetties informing history.
o Make a zebra crossing so that
its safe to cross from one
street to another.
o Water pollution from trash and
waste being thrown.
o Falling into the sea ( either from
being careless, not having railings,
narrow path)
INTANGIBLE ( GENIUS
LOCI )
What is its “sense of place”?
CALMING
CULTURAL
LOCK IN ITS OWN
DIMENSION
MYSTERIOUS
THE PEOPLE
CALMING from looking at the movement of the water in the sea
as well as listening to it.
CULTURAL in terms of the architectural style found there
such as the grilled windows, lanterns, temples, and etc.
THE PEOPLE play a big role in making the jetties a
community rather than just a home.Their close relationship
with each other makes them more than just neighbours.
LOCK IN ITS OWN DIMENSION, as if they are disregarding the urban
development outside and continue to live their carefree life. It gives
visitors a sense of relax and peace, forgetting what is out there. (the
MYSTERIOUS in terms of making visitors feel curious on
what happen in the past. Questioning “how” they build the
jetty and “why”.

On the other hand, the Tans,Yeohs and Koays were more involved in the firewood trade and the making of charcoal. The raw material for charcoal making comes from the mangrove the line the shore which co-existed
