What is Mentoring?
Take a few minutes to think about and write down the following:
• What do you think defines a successful mentor?
• Name at least 3 areas you would like to receive support in.
• Can you write down one thing you think of mentoring is not?
Mentoring is…
a personal developmental relationship in
which a more experienced or more
knowledgeable person helps to guide a
less experienced or less knowledgeable
person.
Mentoring is a process for the informal
transmission of knowledge, social
capital, and the psychosocial support
perceived by the recipient as relevant to
work, career, or professional
development
Wikipedia
Joyce and her mentor Stanley, Singapore Career
Mentoring program 2014
How does Mentoring help – What’s in it for me?
• You are provided with individual support while transitioning from
RMIT to professional life
• It increases your career awareness and helps developing your
knowledge, skills and personal qualities that are valued by
employers
• It helps you identify and develop the skills and personal qualities
required for entry level positions
• It develops your understanding of the employment market
• It creates (global) networking opportunities
• It builds your job search skills and confidence
In Short: YOU BECOME MORE EMPLOYABLE
Program Objectives – What’s in it for Mentors?
• Mentors can share their passion for their profession with YOU, a highly-
motivated student
• It’s an investment in the workforce of the future and ‘give back’ to their
discipline area
• It develops their skills in coaching and mentoring
• It makes them reflect on their own knowledge and work practices
• It gives them exposure to students as potential employees and raise the
profile of their organisation on campus
What Others Say
Time Commitments
• 12 weeks total
• A minimum of a 1 hour meeting per
fortnight, however more frequent
contact is encouraged
• Email correspondence, virtual
meetings or phone calls are all part
of mentoring, if agreed
• Completion of a short online mid-
program and final evaluation survey
is required
Our Mentors
• Mostly RMIT (SIM) Alumni
• Minimum of 3 years management or supervisory experience
• Diverse professional backgrounds
• All volunteers
•What has been your career story to date?
•What does your day-to-day work involve?
•What has been the role of training and further
study in the development of your career?
•What would you have done differently?
•What have been the changes in your work role
over time?
•How has your work affected your lifestyle?
•What are your long-term goals?
•What have been the key challenges in your
career?
•What motivates you to continue in this work role?
What you may want to learn from your Mentor
The Mentoring Agreement
Resources to Help You
Visit the
RMIT Careers Toolkit to
prepare well for your
mentoring sessions
Ok, I’m in! What next?
• Students attend an info session about the
program
• You register online and create a mentoring
profile within the new mentoring software
system
• The system generates your top mentor matches
based on the criteria you have filled out
• You contact your preferred mentor to introduce
yourself and send a partnership request
• Once the mentor has accepted your request
you can schedule a first meeting
• Partnerships continue until program ends
For those who have registered already
• Your current registration has been received by RMIT (in the old
system)
• Your profile is being moved over to the new software
• You will receive an email asking you to complete your new profile
• Once you have done so your new profile is activated and you can
start searching for your ideal mentor

Editor's Notes

  1. Mentoring is not counseling, it doesn’t cover personal issues which aren’t career related. Mentoring also isn’t a guaranteed job or internship placement. If it happens, great but don’t expect it before hand. Mentoring is also not ‘making your mentor do things for you’. e.g. can you please edit my resume and make it look nicer? Mentoring is getting guidance, tips and advice but as student you still have to do the hard work yourself.
  2. Also, mentoring is informal, there are no credits, but it does hugely benefit your employability prospects as it grows both knowledge as well as professional networks of students. Social capital = sharing networks (e.g. a mentor can make referrals for a student or introduce a student into his/her network) Psychosocial support = dealing with insecurities for example (e.g. through sharing experiences from the past a student can gain more confidence ‘oh, my mentor had the same insecurities, and he/she made it so I should be ok too’)
  3. The following video has been made by students in Melbourne who went through the program in 2014. They all went through different programs but as you will see, their overall experience and what they get out of the program is very similar. Play video (hyperlink in power point slide above)
  4. This is an opportunity to explain to students their expected time commitment, which may be around 5 hours over the course of the mentoring partnership. However, if students invest more in the partnership, they will get more out of it as well. The best partnerships develop naturally over time when both parties recognise the benefits and enjoy the meetings with one another. To increase the chances of finding a like-minded mentor we ask both mentors and students to be very specific in their profile applications (which students have completed online, but are able to update through the new software system). Explain to students that the more they express who they are and what they are looking for in their mentoring program profile, the better a suitable match can be generated (and the more likely a successful mentoring partnership will follow!).
  5. So who are the SIM RMIT mentors? Mentors are all volunteering their time so it is very important that students realise this generous offer, don’t take advantage of the situation and respect their mentor by being pro-active in the partnership and showing commitment.
  6. This mentoring agreement will be emailed to all program participants (student mentees and mentors) and it is a very useful template to bring along to your first meeting. Together with their mentor, students can look at which topics work best for both of them (e.g. what is it you want to learn and what is it their mentor can advise on). It also gives mentors and students a good idea on time frames. So when you schedule some content in advance you can be more certain that you actually cover all that you would like to cover within the partnership. As you can see we have left a large space blank so that the student and mentor can also come up with additional topics yourself.
  7. The Careers Toolkit gives students and mentors access to all the information they need to: write professional resumes and application letters, succeed at interviews, plan your career development, and increase your employability. The Careers Toolkit also contains: an interview simulator, practice psychometric tests, and over 100 videos with advice from industry professionals. Please encourage the students to use these resources when preparing for their mentoring discussions. For example, if a student mentee does not have a prepared resume, and would like your assistance to develop one, you can refer them back to the resources in the Careers Toolkit before they meet up with their mentor. They can prepare a first draft then ask for input in tailoring the resume to apply for employment in a particular company for example. This is a far better use of everyone’s time. The information in the Careers Toolkit is predominantly aimed at the Australian Job market. So students may only use it as a first source of information. Most likely the Toolkit is not accessible with the SIM student logins so ask them to write down the guest logins below. Remind them to click the alumni button, not the student/staff one! Also, ask the to write down the password and to NOT change the password at any time! Guest login: (us the alumni button not students and staff) s7777777, password: rmitalumni If you have time if may be nice to do an actual example login online and show the students what the Toolkit looks like www.rmit.edu.au/careers/toolkit (open up screen before the start of presentation to show student how to log on)
  8. Please note that all students who have registered already will receive an invitation from the software platform within a few days after this presentation (or possibly they have received it already) asking them to join the new online platform and complete their profiles. RMIT has migrated their original application already, we just need them to activate their new profiles so they can start searching for their preferred mentor
  9. This is just a small introduction of the Mentoring Team on the ground in Melbourne, available for students and mentors every day to help with questions, concerns, anything that may prevent program participants from having a great mentoring experience. Please contact us anytime on mentoring@rmit.edu.au!
  10. Ask students if they have questions. If there are questions that you cannot answer, please write them down and send them to us together with the student’s contact details. We will respond to the student directly. Also, we will most likely be in Singapore mid-April so we can meet with students face to face at that point as well. Many thanks!!!
