The Digital Culture Challenge: Closing the Employee-Leadership Gap
Leadership underestimates the importance of culture in digital transformations. A survey of 1,700 employees and executives in 340 organizations found a significant gap between perceptions of leadership and employees regarding their organization's digital culture. While 40% of executives believed their organization had a digital culture, only 27% of employees agreed. The survey also found gaps in perceptions of innovation, collaboration, and vision. Employees reported that initiatives for these aspects of culture were not effectively implemented in practice. The research highlights that successful digital transformations require aligning culture by closing gaps between leadership's plans and employees' experiences.
Beyond the Gig Economy
- The gig economy as currently defined will not last long term, as tasks like ridesharing and delivery are likely to be automated. However, skilled professionals using platforms like Thumbtack to find clients will persist and proliferate.
- Technology is empowering skilled tradespeople by allowing them to connect directly with customers and run their businesses more efficiently without traditional employers. Skilled professionals are less reliant on college degrees and are building middle-class lifestyles through online skills marketplaces.
- Policymakers should support independent workers through policies that provide safety nets and make it easier for skilled professionals to succeed without full-time employment.

Transformation encompasses the adaptation of an organisation’s value proposition and business & operational model to the fundamental changes brought by global trends, digital technologies and increasingly demanding stakeholders needs and expectations. Transformation will become a must-have core capability for success, be that for commercial or governmental organisations: given the raft of upcoming challenges those that are Gulf-based have a pressing need here.
In this white paper we argue that instilling the capability requires the creation of a dedicated Transformation Office, responsible for driving complex, disruptive change initiatives that have a profound impact on both operational structures and the strategy of the organisation. We outline the required remit and key focus areas of a Transformation Office (led by a Chief Transformation
Officer) and how it differs from, yet works alongside, conventional Project Management or of Strategy Delivery Offices.

As a tech leader at ThoughtWorks, a large part of my job involves recommending practices to our clients so they can build and deliver good quality software faster. In doing so repeatedly for many clients I have created a toolkit that contains practical advice from being on the ground. This is what we do, we know it works. When Julius Caesar entered Rome with his army by crossing the river Rubicon, he did something that couldn’t be undone ever again. In your journey as a leader, avoid mistakes that are difficult to correct later. Here are a set of practices that you want to adopt as soon as possible.
Error handling
Handling error conditions is a core part of the software we write. However, we often treat it as a second class citizen, obscuring our intent through abuse of null values and exceptions that make our code hard to understand and maintain. In the functional programming community, it is common to use datatypes such as Option, Either or Validated to make our intentions explicit when dealing with errors. We can leverage the compiler to verify that we are handling them instead of hoping for the best at runtime. This results in code that is clearer, without hidden path flows. We’ll show how we have been doing this in Kotlin, with the help of the Arrow library.
