Container Terminal Development on the Continent: Africa PerspectiveWSP
During this workshop, delivered at the African Ports and Rail Evolution 2018 forum, WSP led a discussion on port and the container business in Africa.
The two main topics were:
- Development that should be considered with procurement in mind
- Planning of container terminal to inform decision-making.
Discussion featured PRIME, the WSP Terminal Planning Tool.
WSP uses PRIME for individual marine and rail terminals as well as entire port complexes.
PRIME includes site and model components for container, break/neo-bulk, dry bulk, liquid bulk, and RO/RO facilities. Custom program code transfers all attributes of the plan directly to Microsoft Excel, where a sophisticated model is ready to estimate capacity, equipment needs, equipment usage, operating expense, capital expense, cash flow, and environmental measures. This tight linkage between the plan and the analysis model means the planner can make site changes and instantly see the effect across the full range of impacts.

Client was provided a comprehensive, robust view of:
—What the terminal should look like
—How we get from current state to final state
—How much time it will take to convert
—How much it is going to cost over time
—How construction will disrupt capacity
—How development will affect cash flow
—How much the operating costs will improve

—Craft a sensible bid
—Make a well-supported case to bankers and financiers
—Put a well prepared feasible solution to market
Mobility Pricing: How to Harness Mobility Pricing to Reduce Congestion, Promo...WSP
Acting as a technical analysis lead for the Metro Vancouver Mobility Pricing Independent Commission, WSP experts studied the use of congestion charging and mobility pricing for the Metro Vancouver Regional District.
An eight-month study ensued and resulted in a crucial set of data categorized by geography, time of day, and pricing level. The goals of the study remained: reducing congestion, generating additional revenue for the governing body, and promoting fairness.

Integrated Cost & Schedule Risk Analysis (ICSRA) provides powerful insight into how a project’s critical path and cost can deviate when Estimating Uncertainty and Risk are considered. These insights can be far superior to just using the critical path, or performing separate Quantitative Schedule Risk Analysis (QSRA) and Quantitative Cost Risk Analysis (QCRA).
This webinar presented on Tuesday 14 November provided an overview and demonstrated progressive approaches and techniques to ICSRA which can be used at various stages throughout a project’s lifecycle, and using outputs to make better informed decisions and consider additional actions.
The session content is aimed at project professionals at all levels to demystify a method which is often thought of as too complicated or unnecessary.
It is also aimed at corporate and board professionals to express the supplementary understanding and awareness provided by ICSRA, why it should be executed on major projects and programmes, and the benefits of implementing ICSRA into projects and organisations.

Schedule Risk Analysis is used on a wide range of projects as an established technique for identifying the uncertainties that threaten (or enhance) project success. However, applying the technique effectively to produce valid results on large and complex projects poses more of a challenge. This presentation summarises an approach to conducting schedule risk modelling for complex, long-term engineering projects, avoiding common pitfalls, and ensuring that outputs can be used to actively influence the project’s outcome.

Once a project or a turnaround team has developed a cost estimate, they are usually required to assign an accuracy range to the estimate and calculate the contingency. Some teams take a simplistic view that if the design package has been developed to a certain standard or class, then the accuracy range can be assigned according to common rules of thumb. However, this route can bypass the requirement to calculate contingency, and it looks at only the “systemic” uncertainty in the estimate, while ignoring any “project specific” uncertainty and risk. In addition, copious evidence over the past 30 years shows that, if left unguided, teams are generally over-optimistic and hence under-estimate the contingency required and assign too tight an accuracy range. If we look at the common methodologies used by teams, there are a number of common misconceptions and errors that contribute to this under-estimation.
Supply chain risk management (SCRM) is "the implementation of strategies to manage both everyday and exceptional risks along the supply chain based on continuous risk assessment with the objective of reducing vulnerability and ensuring continuity".
SCRM attempts to reduce supply chain vulnerability via a coordinated holistic approach, involving all supply chain stakeholders, which identifies and analyses the risk of failure points within the supply chain. Mitigation plans to manage these risks can involve logistics, finance and risk management disciplines; the ultimate goal being to ensure supply chain continuity in the event of a scenario which otherwise have interrupted normal business and thereby profitability.

“We like to think our decision making is completely rational. However, once there's an element of uncertainty, conscious assessments are only part of the story. Two other inputs, both subconscious and driven by our innate need to survive, have a big impact.
One, automatic reactions driven by cognitive biases, gets plenty of airtime.
The other input, our raw visceral emotions might be scary to talk about and less understood - but that’s not a reason to pretend they don’t exist!”

Disruptive technology and accelerating change is the now the norm within business. Advancements that feel relatively recent are already becoming embedded into business-as-usual activity. AI is one such advancement; it is already being used and having real-world impacts across the project profession.
To help P3M professionals understand the implications of this change, APM invited representatives from organisations that have introduced or are preparing to introduce AI into their project workstreams, to explain their approach and share their insight with fellow professionals.
