The document appears to be a series of tweets by John Willshire discussing various topics related to brands, marketing, and the social web. Some key points discussed include the potential differences between traditional marketing structures that may be more "dialectic" versus seeking consensus, versus social platforms being more "dialogic" in nature by allowing different ideologies to coexist. Willshire also discusses giving up certain things like perfectionism and control in order to embrace principles like fragmentation, cooperation, complexity, and experimentation in a modern marketing context.
Why Making Things People Want beats Making People Want Things - Ad:tech 2013John V Willshire
"Why Making Things People Want beats Making People Want Things" is a talk I gave at Ad:tech 2013 in London at the Kensington Olympia.
It's nearly two years since I stumbled across the phrase as a galvanising idea for the work I do with clients and agencies here at Smithery, so it's been great to reinterrogate the notion slighty in the context of some other things. As always, a smattering of economics and maker culture infuses it all.
Social media is all the rage but what about when things go wrong? A triggering event that creates a significant disruption to an organization, puts its reputation at risk. In this presentation we'll walk you through some tried and true methodologies on how to approach crisis in your social media.
Tips to Enhance Your Business Through Social Media - Overview: The Basics of Social Media, Communities vs Audiences, The L.E.A.R.N method, Leveraging Social Media for growth and cost reduction, and helpful tools

A presentation delivered at the second Google Firestarters evening, where I talked alongside Tom Hulme of IDEO on 'what planning can learn from design thinking?'
Where Tom majored on the good things about Design Thinking (which he's brilliant on, of course), I suggested that from the planning perspective (and wider agency model), we must be careful that we take the brilliant approach and beliefs of the discipline, but leave behind the 'process'.
Plus, there's a great story from Dan Ariely nearly the front on marketing process...
Lights! Camera! Interaction! What Designers Can Learn From FilmmakersAdam Connor
I began college as a film student. I’ve always loved storytelling, particularly visual storytelling in the forms of film and animation. Well-made films show us that they can drive engagement, communicate in subtle ways, change attitudes, and inspire us to try to change our lives.
Films succeed in evoking responses and engaging audiences only with a combination of well-written narrative and effective storytelling technique. It’s the filmmaker’s job to put this together. To do so they’ve developed processes, tools and techniques that allow them to focus attention, emphasize information, foreshadow and produce the many elements that together comprise a well-told story.
We’re responsible for creating products that aren’t just easy to use, but that people appreciate using. It stands to reason that the methods used in films to communicate with and engage audiences can serve as inspiration for designers.
With this presentation, we'’ll revisit the topic of using stories in design and expand on the technical aspects used in film to communicate. We’ll look at some tools used in film such as: cinematic patterns, beat sheets, and storyboards. We’ll consider why they’re used and how we might look to them for inspiration.

Getting Flexible: Working Content into Responsive Design—MIMA SummitSara Wachter-Boettcher
Responsive design is about more than canvases and code. It’s about adopting a flexible mindset—and that means rethinking our content workflow, too. To create sites that keep meaning intact as they shift and reshape to fit smartphones and tablets, you need to know which messages are critical to meeting both business goals and users’ needs and how content elements should work together to communicate them. Content strategy can answer these questions—if you incorporate it into your project at the right time and place.

Christina Wodtke has devoted her career to tackling monumental tasks. She’s helped grow companies like LinkedIn, Yahoo, and the New York Times. Nowadays she works with startups and entrepreneurs, sharing her strategies for success and inspiring them to pursue big goals and outlandish dreams. Christina knows how to inspire diverse teams to work together, going all out in pursuit of a single, ultra-challenging goal. Hint: It’s not about to-do lists and accountability charts. How do you get your team to commit to bold goals? How do you stay motivated despite setbacks and disappointments? And is failure ever a viable option? Christina Wodtke will demonstrate how she uses objectives and key results to help teams tackle and realize big goals in a methodical way, leaving nothing to chance. You’ll learn the beauty of a good fail and how regular check-ins can keep you on track to success.

Marketers of cosmetics can no longer simply rely on the photoshopped models of billboards, lifestyle magazines, and urban murals to secure market share.
This presentation is for anyone who has had technical, strategic and/or budgetary constraints influence what was built vs. what was imagined. We will dig into how to use systems-based thinking to understand how things influence one another and learn techniques to discover constraints sooner. We will learn how to start creating efficiencies of digital process, infrastructure and communication in pursuit of better user experiences.
Superheroes, Origin Stories & Artefact Cards - Best Of Britannia 2013John V Willshire
A talk from 3rd October 2013 at Best of Britannia, a show of the best in contemporary British Deisgn and Manufacture, Held in Clerkenwell at the Familoe Building.
While Information Architecture took its name from architecture, it took very little else. This is not surprising, as the early days of the web were about making sites that supported the interaction between people and data. The obvious model back then was a library; a library is a space for humans to receive knowledge. But with the rise of social networks, and the integration of community into almost all online experiences, more architecture practices are directly transferable to design. Online spaces are no longer just about findability, but about falling in love, getting your work done, goofing around, reconnecting with old friends, staving off loneliness... humans doing human things.
As an early Information Architect who had been working in the search field, I found very little but entertainment from phenomenology's Gaston Bachelard or innovator Frank Gehry. But once I began working on social spaces, it all changed. We all know Christopher Alexander from his pattern-language approach to codifying design solutions, but if you go beyond the mere structure you find that in those patterns lies the answers to tricky privacy issues and the cold-start problem. Architects of buildings can help us form a new approach to the architecture of human spaces online. Poetics will go down easy with plenty of real world examples from current websites, shanty villages, air apps and cityscapes.

A talk given at the Oceanographers of the Future symposium in October, about using card methodologies in helping people create a range of different scenarios in order to better develop their future thinking capabilities.
A talk I prepared for this year's class on the IPA Excellence Diploma, on innovation, information, strategic design, and making tools that help you work through that process. It's mapping out a journey from when I did the course myself, through the interim thinking and ideas behind Smithery, up to the end of last year.
These are the slides from my talk at Google Firestarters on 5th September 2017 in London. It's about two tools in particular we use at Smithery (www.smithery.com) to break the patterns that we find can emerge and strangle how people approach their work. The content is a compressed version of some of the material from the Innovation & Future Thinking course I led at IED in Barcelona this summer.
The opening day's slides and exercises to the two week summer course at IED in Barcelona I'm running. Our project topic this year is the future of food. More details on the course can be found here - http://iedbarcelona.es/en/cursos-info/summer-course-in-innovation-and-future-thinking/
A talk comprised of various threads of thought from various Smithery projects across the last eighteen months, given at the open house at Loft Digital as part of London Technology Week. Starts with some conceptual thinking, ends with some examples and approaches for you to try at home...

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
