The opening shot to Lorde’s Royals is an establishing shot of a street, it is almost as though the
camera is on the back of a car traveling down the street and the camera is looking back onto the
street. It then cuts to the beat of the music to show a black screen with the artists name and the title
of the song. The scene then cuts away to a close up of the artist who in centred in the middle third of
the camera glaring into the camera lenses with no facial expression. It them jumps again to show a
long shot of an unmade bed. It then cuts back to the medium close up of the artist who is in the
same position as last time however this time she is sing the lyrics to her song there is another cut
away to a close up of a wall, the top of the curtain railing and the tip, of an indoor tree. It then cuts
back to the female artist, this conforms to Andrew Goodwin’s theory of voyeurism as Lorde is shown
a lot throughout the video and is constantly in the centre of the camera. As the lyrics pause the
camera jumps back to the shot lf the curtains however this time it is a long shot of the full room.
Again the camera cuts back to Lorde. The camera cuts back to the empty bed, it is the same type of
shot although this time it features a boy sat up in it, it then cuts away to lorded and then back again
to the boy in his bed, it then cuts to the boy washing his face, this shot is a close up. The next shot is
a close up of the boys chest. The next cutaway is a long shot of the boy sat at his breakfast table, it
them cuts to a medium shot of the top of the TV in the bottom centre third of the camera. It then
cuts back to Lorde; again it is a close up of her face however she is now positioned in then right third
of the camera. This music video consist of these types of shots continuing through out
demonstrating that the artist is saying about this boy’s life who isn’t rich and comes from a rough
background but he is fine with that and demonstrates that money isn’t the way to happiness.
