Grand budapest hotel storyboard
1. Shot 1
Two shot with Zero and Gustave standing
in the foreground with a pastel pink wall
in the background, more specifically the
wall of The Grand Budapest Hotel
This is shot in a mid-shot
Shot 2
Long shot with Zero and Gustave in the
foreground, and with a doorman in the
background by some rotating doors. How
Zero is standing and looking up to
Gustave makes the viewer feel
sympathetic towards him as he looks
anxious
Shot 3
The camera pans up to a window where
‘Mr Mosher’ emerges from.
This is a long shot with a quite dramatic
low-angle to make it seem as if it is at the
same angle as the eyes of Zero and
Gustave
2. Shot 4
We then cut to a long shot of Gustave
and Zero looking up at where Mr Mosher
is in the window
This is taken from a high angle that
matches the low angle in the previous
shot so that we can see that these to
people are connected and talking to one
another
Shot 5
We then cut back to Mr Mosher in thee
window just like before in shot 3
Shot 6
We then cut back to Zero and Gustave as
before in shot 4
3. Shot 7
We then cut to mr Mosher once again,
but after this the camera pans down to
the doors which Zero and Gustave and
standing face to face in front of again, but
this time we are a bit closer to them and
they are standing in a more uniform
manner, setting the scene for how
Gustave treats his employees with
strictness
Shot 8
We then see a long shot of a door
opening on the left hand side of the
screen, of which Zero (who is following
Gustave) and Gustave walk through
Shot 9
We then see the first handheld shot of
the scene with Gustave and Zero walking
through the lobby.
This is shot at a slight low angle and it is
framed to be a medium close up shot.
4. Shot 10
In this shot we see a character walking
towards the camera as it moves towards
him, we also see a character fumbling
with his hat to the side which is
mentioned by Gustave in the next shot.
This shot is framed as a long shot
Shot 11
In this shot we see Gustave, Zero, the two
characters from the previous shot and
also a chef. Gustave and Zero are the
main focus of the shot because we follow
them through the hallway as Gustave
speaks to employees and guests.
This shot is framed as a slightly closer
long shot in comparison to before.
Shot 12
We then have another handheld shot of
Gustave and Zero like we did in shot 9
5. Shot 13
In this shot we see a character holding
some tools in the same format/ shot type
as we did before in shot 10
Shot 14
In this shot we see Zero and Gustave
walking down in the lobby once again but
this time we see Gustave change his tone
as he talks to one of the guests in
comparison to the employee
Shot 15
In this shot we see Zero behind Gustave
once again, in the same way as in shots 9
and 12, but this clip is different because
there is a silence which is dragged on
after Zero is asked about his family, and
answers “Zero”.
6. Final shot
• The final shot is Zero and Gustave walking into an elevator, the shot is
framed in nearly the exact same way as the shot where the two walk
in to the lobby with the only difference is that they leave on the right
hand side of the screen, this tells the audience that the pair have
walked in almost a straight line from one side of the lobby to the
other.
7. Sound throughout the scene
• Shot 1- We hear Zero’s footsteps as he enters and there is a fast paced music playing in the
background, and dialogue
• Shot 2- We hear the same music still along with dialogue from characters
• Shot 3- We hear the windows open, dialogue from characters
• Shots 4 to 6- Dialogue and music
• Shot 7- We hear the window close, dialogue, music and Gustave taking/opening his notebook
from his pocket
• Shot 8- We hear the door squeak as it is opened, footsteps, music becomes louder and more fast
paced
• Shot 9- Dialogue, Water fountain, noises of people working inside the lobby room and people
talking amongst themselves in the background
8. Sound throughout the scene (continued)
• Shot 10- there is dialogue, music and general noises (such as murmuring in the background and
footsteps of the characters)
• Shot 11- Dialogue, music and general noises (same as before)
• Shot 12- Dialogue, music and the footsteps in this clip are more noticeable than before (maybe to
add to the effect of the handheld shot and relatively fast moving characters)
• Shot 13- Dialogue, music and just general sounds once again
• Shot 14- Dialogue, music and general sounds
• Shot 15- The music becomes much quieter in this shot to emphasis the long, sad silence when
Zero is asked about his family
• Shot 16- Dialogue, music (but it is louder towards the end of the shot), footsteps of the characters
entering the lift and the noise of the elevator door closing to signify the end of the scene (similar
to how the door squeaked when they entered)
9. General Notes
• Throughout this scene and the movie in general there is a lot of colour used, most noticeably
inside the Grand Budapest Hotel. This may be there to show the energy of one of the main
characters, M.Gustave as he is a very upbeat, snappy and fast-paced character. This is in contrast
to the other main character Zero who somehow almost always seems to be calm yet anxious as
he follows Gustave almost religiously.
• During this scene there is also a lot of movement which is seen through how the camera
masterfully traverses through the hotel lobby with Gustave and Zero. And at the beginning of the
scene when we see most of the static shots the subjects are framed almost perfectly every time
this may have been done to show that the characters are going to build a strong connection.
• Through this one scene we learn a lot about Zero and Gustave through how they interact with
one another and how Gustave interacts with other employees and the current residents in the
hotel.
